Chapter 40 Angry
Heidi had said on the phone that they needed someone to pretend to be Victoria's husband. Brandon was furious. Who did Victoria think she was, that anyone could replace her?
"Sir...why don't you accompany Miss Griffin?" Elijah tentatively suggested, worried that people might think Victoria had married someone else. But Brandon's cold glare shut him up.
"Accompany her? She's not worthy," Brandon said, picking up a coffee cup and slamming it down on the table with a dull thud.
Heidi had already arranged everything, and Victoria was getting ready for the engagement ceremony. But she was still hesitant about letting Heidi's cousin pretend to be her fiancé.
She put on the dress that Heidi had bought for her that day. It was beautiful, but she felt like she didn't have anything appropriate to wear to such a formal occasion.
As she walked into the living room, she saw Brandon sitting on the couch, quietly watching her. It was the first time he had seen her so formal. The simple style blended perfectly with her personality, and her small face looked even more innocent and fair.
He looked at her deeply and heard her say, "What are you doing here...?"
"What's wrong? Do you have a guilty conscience for doing something wrong?" Brandon's already stern face became even colder when he looked at Victoria. The dark pupils of his eyes seemed like a deep abyss, attracting all the surrounding energy.
Victoria was afraid when he looked at her like this. Even if she wasn't guilty, she felt guilty just being looked at like that.
"I promised to go to Dylan's engagement party with Heidi and was just about to go."
The tall man suddenly stood up. "Are you going with Heidi or finding another man to accompany you?"
Looking at his sharp expression, like an ice pick attacking her, Victoria's feet weakened and she suddenly understood.
He already knew.
"You, you know... It's not that I want to bring someone else, and because you're so busy, you wouldn't accompany me. So I thought of asking Heidi's cousin to go with me..."
Because she was flustered, she couldn't even remember what she was saying. "You want to pretend that Heidi's cousin is your husband and go with him? Did you really say that?"
Victoria looked at him. "What should I do then? You won't come with me."
The man looked at her and walked towards her step by step as she dared to lift her head and look straight at him. "What are you doing?"
"If I don't go with you, you'll find another man to be your husband? Ha, then I won't be able to fulfill my husband's duties. Will you also find another man to help me fulfill them and go outside to find a room to solve it?"
The harsh words left Victoria wide-eyed. "What are you talking about? That's not what I meant. It doesn't matter anyway, we'll get divorced sooner or later."
"Doesn't matter? Do you have no standards? You can just call any man your husband? Are you that desperate?" His eyes were sharp, and Victoria could see the hurt and frustration in them. He was so domineering and spoke so harshly, selfish and never considering others. He was a complete scumbag.
"Yes, I am desperate. If I need you and you're not there, I'll find someone else. What's wrong with that?"
"You..." Brandon's handsome face was contorted with anger. "Is it Heidi's cousin? Does the Miller family think anyone can replace me? Fine, I'll show them who Brandon really is." Even Victoria, as foolish as she was, could sense the threat in his words. He was planning to take action against the Miller family!
"Brandon, please don't. I was wrong, I'll go by myself. I won't let her cousin come." Victoria grabbed his arm and pleaded with him. "Please don't do this."
Seeing the panic on her face,he softened his tone slightly. "Victoria, have you thought about what would happen if someone from the Duncan family heard you calling another man your husband in such a public place?" Victoria felt wronged, but still nodded silently, biting her lip.
She understood his meaning, but naturally, there was still some resentment in her heart. This person only thought of himself. What she thought before, that he would care for her to some extent, was just her own wishful thinking. "I understand," she said. Of course, she couldn't blame him. He wasn't really her husband, nor was he anyone to her. It was understandable that he only thought of himself. Her heart was just a little disappointed and sad. Brandon let go of her. After she left, she called Heidi. "You don't need to ask your cousin to come. I'll go to the engagement banquet myself." Heidi didn't understand, "Why? My cousin has already agreed." "I have my own thoughts. Just promise me." Heidi heard the pessimism in her tone and realized that something must have happened on her side, so she agreed. Victoria left, but in Brandon's mind, all he could see was the look she gave him before leaving. Was she feeling wronged? Was she blaming him? Was it his fault for not letting her call other men her husband? Sitting in the study, feeling uneasy for a while, he called for Elijah. "There's something for you to do today." Hearing Brandon's instructions, Elijah was taken aback. The Clark Family's engagement ceremony was scheduled to be held at the Clark Family's own hotel.
Due to the solid foundation of the Clark Family, many people came to the engagement ceremony, including some reporters who came to take photos. Erica was excited but also a little worried as she looked at the scene before her.
"Mom, do you think Victoria will really bring her man with her?"
"Well, she has already said she would, so why wouldn't she?" Julia snorted.
Erica thought to herself that if Victoria didn't bring him, it would mean that he was not good enough and she would be happy about that.
"There are so many guests outside. When they see Victoria, they will think that Dylan gave up on her and chose me instead, giving up on a beautiful woman like her."
"That's impossible. Your dress today is specially tailored for you, making you look elegant and noble. She has nothing compared to you. She probably only has the dress that Heidi bought for her that day. She can't possibly compete with you," Julia said confidently.
Erica's eyes flickered with a hint of pride. Julia's words were exactly what she wanted to hear.
