Chapter 239
I watched Bruce saunter out of the office, shooting me a smug glance before snorting coldly and heading back to his desk.
I frowned slightly, almost imperceptibly.
But that feeling only lasted a moment before I smoothed it away.
Ophelia was the company's boss.
She made the decisions, and I had no reason to question her authority.
I just needed to follow my supervisor's orders.
What relieved me was that after this morning's drama, Bruce had quieted down and stopped bothering me.
Ophelia didn't ask me to continue mentoring Bruce either.
That afternoon, an uninvited guest arrived at the company.
"Mr. Miller, please come in!"
Bruce's eager voice rang out, drawing everyone's attention.
Hearing 'Mr. Miller,' I frowned and looked up.
Tyler was following behind Bruce, looking arrogant.
His eyes swept around the room, his face showing barely concealed disgust.
"This is how small your company is?"
Bruce nodded and bowed in agreement, "Yes, yes... our company is indeed small, so having Mr. Miller visit is truly an honor for us!"
Tyler frowned slightly but ignored Bruce's words.
He looked around the company, and when he spotted me, his eyes lit up.
Tyler strode over, "Sue, so you're here. I've been looking for you forever!"
"What do you want?"
My tone was cold.
Before Tyler could speak, Bruce cut in, scolding coldly, "Ms. Wilson! What's with that attitude? Mr. Miller came all the way here specifically to discuss a partnership with our company. Do you even know who Mr. Miller is?"
Tyler raised his hand to stop Bruce.
"Bruce, you can go now."
Bruce didn't react immediately and opened his mouth.
He lingered there, hesitating for a while before asking, "But Mr. Miller, about the partnership we discussed earlier..."
Tyler frowned, his tone displeased, "Did I say I wouldn't give it to you?"
Bruce quickly lowered his head and slunk away.
Before leaving, Bruce glared at me resentfully.
I ignored him and looked at Tyler, "What are you doing here?"
"Dad heard you were working here, so I came to check it out."
Tyler looked around, clearly not very satisfied, "You're Mrs. Cooper now, why are you working at such a small company? Doesn't Jason arrange work for you?"
"Where I work is my own choice."
With Tyler here, I couldn't work properly anyway.
I simply closed my computer and frowned, "Did you come here for something?"
"The way you talk, can't a father just care about you?"
Tyler looked hurt.
He pulled a contract from his briefcase and placed it in front of me.
I glanced at it but didn't reach for it.
"What's this about?"
"This is a partnership project between Polaris Company and the Miller Group. Polaris Company is very small—this partnership is worth at least half a year of their efforts."
Tyler explained, with a hint of pride in his voice.
"What do you want?"
I asked.
Tyler wasn't a kind person.
Coming here personally with this contract clearly meant he had other motives.
Tyler smiled gently, "Don't be so tense. I just want you to arrange a meeting between me and Jason. I heard you got your marriage certificate—he's your legal husband now. If you ask, Jason will definitely agree."
"No."
I said flatly.
My eyes fell on the contract, and I added, "Take the contract back too. I don't need it."
"Need it! Why wouldn't we need it?"
Bruce suddenly barged in, his face full of excitement.
"Ms. Wilson, this is a contract I worked hard to get. What right do you have to say no!"
Tyler glanced at Bruce but didn't stop him.
My brow furrowed tightly, anger rising in my chest.
Tyler was doing this on purpose!
Getting other people involved with the contract, using Polaris Company's interests to trap me.
"Ms. Wilson, what does your silence mean?"
Bruce seemed to suddenly think of something, looking smug, "I get it now—you're just worried that if I land this partnership, it'll threaten your position as Ms. Wilson, right? Even if Ms. Blake were here today, she'd definitely sign this contract."
Our argument drew other people from the company.
Even Ophelia came out of her office.
Her initially confused expression softened when she saw Tyler.
"Mr. Miller, I didn't expect you to come here personally."
"Sue works here, so I brought over a partnership."
Tyler handed the contract to Ophelia, smiling warmly and politely, "Thank you for taking care of Sue, Ms. Blake."
Ophelia glanced at me, then looked down at the contract.
I took a deep breath, "Ms. Blake, we can't sign this contract. I can bring the company better deals."
If we signed this contract, it would mean I owed Tyler a favor.
Tyler wasn't a good person.
Once he got his hooks in, it wouldn't be easy to shake him off.
"Wait a moment, I need to make a call."
Dropping that line, I strode out of the company.
Looking at Jason's number, I sighed and dialed.
Originally, I didn't want to trouble Jason. Coming out to work was about proving I could be independent.
I never thought I'd still need Jason to bail me out.
The phone was answered as soon as it started ringing.
Jason's voice was incredibly gentle, "Honey, why are you calling at this time? Did you get off work early? I'll come pick you up."
"Honey, can you come to Polaris Company?"
I asked.
Jason's tone immediately became serious, "What happened?"
"Tyler came with a partnership contract for Polaris Company, saying he'd trade it for a chance to meet with you and talk."
I was quite troubled, "I don't want to sign it, but..."
"Honey."
Before I could finish explaining, Jason gently interrupted me.
"You don't need to explain to me. Whatever you want to do, I'll support you unconditionally. Don't worry, I'm coming right now."
Jason didn't hang up.
I could hear him instructing Samuel on the other end to prepare a contract and come to Polaris Company immediately.
On his way over, Jason kept talking to me.
"Honey, where are you now?"
"At the company entrance."
"Go downstairs and get a coffee. By the time you're done, I'll be there."
"Okay."
I agreed. I didn't want to go back and see that annoying scene anyway.
I went downstairs to the coffee shop and bought two coffees to go.
Just as I picked up the bag, someone hugged me from behind.
The familiar scent instantly made my heart settle back into place.
"Honey, you've been wronged."
Jason patted my head.
The emotions I'd been keeping calm suddenly collapsed, and an indescribable sense of grievance welled up.
I couldn't help but tear up.
"No, I think I've caused you trouble."
"I'm really happy you called me."
Jason put the hot coffee in my hand and held my other hand as we went upstairs.
"Leave the rest to me."
When Jason and I returned to Polaris Company, Tyler was sitting on the reception sofa with Bruce smiling obsequiously beside him.
When Tyler saw Jason arrive, his eyes lit up and his smile became much more genuine.
"Jason, you're finally here."
