Chapter 240
Jason was still holding my hand, staring at Tyler with a calm and cold gaze.
"Mr. Miller, what impressive tactics. Just to see me, you specially came here to trouble my wife?"
Tyler's smile remained unchanged, "Jason, you make it sound so bad. I was just thinking Sue's having a hard time at this small company, so I came to help out."
"Is Polaris Company that desperate for orders? The last project with Glacier Corp will take at least a year, right?"
Jason looked at Ophelia with a serious, distant expression.
Ophelia looked troubled.
I could see it clearly.
She wanted both orders.
I could understand that.
Polaris Company was a startup, and every order was crucial.
Even so, I still felt uncomfortable.
Ophelia didn't hesitate for long before making her decision, "Mr. Cooper, rest assured, Polaris Company will naturally complete the project with Glacier Corp first."
She paused, then turned to Tyler, whose expression had darkened.
"Sorry Mr. Miller, our small company has limited capacity. I'm afraid we'll have to decline your project."
A shadow flashed in Tyler's eyes, which he quickly hid.
"We're all businesspeople. If we don't work together this time, there'll be opportunities in the future."
His gaze fell on me, "Since Jason's here too, let's go out and talk."
Everyone's curious, probing looks fell on me.
Frustration churned in my chest.
If it weren't for Tyler, none of these annoying things would have happened today!
Ophelia spoke up at the right moment, "Ms. Wilson, it's almost time to get off work anyway, and there's nothing else going on at the company. You can leave early."
I nodded in agreement.
I let go of Jason's hand, walked to my desk to pack up my things, not even glancing at Tyler, then took Jason's arm and left quickly.
As for Tyler's suggestion to talk?
What was there to talk about between us?
Jason silently turned his head to look at me, wordlessly tightening his grip on my hand.
While waiting for the elevator, Tyler caught up.
He got into the same elevator as us.
I thought I'd made myself perfectly clear.
But I didn't expect Tyler to be so persistent.
"Sue, time really flies. In the blink of an eye, you're married. Come to think of it, you haven't been home to visit yet. When do you have time? Come home with Jason for a visit. I'll have Ember cook you a feast herself."
Tyler spoke cheerfully.
At first listen, you'd really think we were some kind of close father and daughter.
I glanced coldly at Tyler, then asked Jason, "Honey, I heard that the Miller Group has been going downhill for nearly a year now. Is that true or false?"
"True."
Jason nodded slightly, "Times are changing. If you just hold onto old things, it's only natural to be left behind."
"The past is the past. Clinging to it will only annoy people."
Tyler's face darkened and he stopped talking.
When the elevator arrived, he quickened his pace and left in big strides.
Watching Tyler's retreating figure, I curiously asked Jason, "What's the Miller Group's situation like now? I feel like Tyler's been coming to see you more and more lately. Is the Miller family going bankrupt?"
"Not quite bankrupt yet, but not far from it either."
Jason pinched my cheek, his tone tinged with amusement, "The project we snatched from the Miller family last time hurt the Miller Group's foundation. A few days ago, the Blair family, who was supposed to marry into the Miller family, went bankrupt. This left the Miller family, who had been planning to maintain their prosperity through marriage alliances, with no options. That's why they've turned their attention back to us."
After his explanation, I suddenly understood.
Chris's former fiancée Rowan had tried to ruin Lily out of jealousy.
This angered Ryan, and the Scott family cracked down on the Blair family. With Jason and Richard helping out, the Blair family quickly went bankrupt.
The Miller family also lost their marriage alliance partner.
With things getting worse day by day, it wasn't easy for the Miller family to find a new marriage partner.
Just like Chris said earlier.
Everyone's a businessperson, and everyone acts with purpose.
Other wealthy families had no obligation to help the Miller family for free.
That's why Tyler set his sights on me.
I, his biological daughter, was now Jason's legal wife, truly married into a wealthy family. As long as I was willing to acknowledge him as my father, my marriage to Jason could be seen as an alliance between the Cooper family and the Miller family. The originally precarious Miller family could naturally resolve their crisis.
But the precondition for all of this was—that I was willing to acknowledge Tyler as my father and admit my connection to the Miller family.
That's why Tyler kept shamelessly coming to find me.
After figuring all this out, I pursed my lips.
"He's got quite the wishful thinking, but too bad for him, I'm not buying it."
Jason smiled, "That's right, he shouldn't think he can fool my wife like she's an idiot."
Why did that sound so strange?
That evening, I chatted with Lily about Tyler showing up at Polaris Company today.
Lily was so angry she started cursing, "Is he sick? He never took care of you growing up, and now he's suddenly playing the devoted father? Psycho! The whole Miller family is psycho!"
She paused, then added, "Except you."
I laughed, "I've never admitted to being part of the Miller family. They have nothing to do with me."
Lily: You better never forgive them. Getting involved with them is just asking for trouble!
Hearing her angry tone, I suddenly thought of something.
"Did Chris bother you again?"
"You could tell from that?"
Lily was surprised, then sighed deeply, "Yes! I went to the park today to sketch, and I kept feeling like someone was following me. After searching for a while, I found out it was Chris. He had the nerve to say he was just worried about my safety, nothing else."
"Listen to that—is that something a normal person would say? A creepy stalker saying he's worried about my safety? The biggest threat to my safety is him!"
I frowned slightly, "So Chris is harassing you again? Are you okay?"
I remembered how Chris used to constantly show up to harass Lily, to the point where she wanted to get a dog just to bite him.
Lily: [I'm fine. I'm living at Ryan's place now, so even if Chris wants to do something, he has to think twice.]
Only then did I relax.
"That's good. Contact me anytime if anything happens."
I chatted with Lily for quite a while longer. Until Jason came out of the bathroom and glued himself to me that I finally hung up.
Leaning in Jason's arms, I affectionately kissed his cheek, feeling a bit down, "Honey, I'm a little tired today."
Jason held me, "Let me hold you. You won't be tired after a hug."
The familiar, comforting scent surrounded me, and I could hear Jason's strong, steady heartbeat.
My originally exhausted and uncomfortable mood was gradually soothed.
When a person relaxes,, they start getting drowsy.
Just as I was about to fall asleep, the hand on my waist started to get restless.
I'm never believing what Jason says again!
