Chapter 398 Elizabeth Doesn't See Her
The next day, morning.
Freya sat in her wheelchair, looking up at the Seraphina Enterprises sign.
A dazed expression crossed Freya's aged face.
She never thought there would come a day when she'd have to seek out Elizabeth.
She didn't have Elizabeth's contact information, so she could only come directly to Seraphina Enterprises to find her.
"Push me inside." Freya had already paid off the caregiver to keep yesterday's incident from Herschel and the others.
The security guard stopped Freya, saying apologetically, "I'm sorry, ma'am, we have rules here. We can't just let anyone in. Who are you looking for? Do you have an appointment?"
"I'm Elizabeth's mother," Freya said flatly.
The security guard's body tensed when he heard Freya claim to be Elizabeth's mother.
Although he wasn't very familiar with the company's upper management, he certainly knew Elizabeth's name - after all, she was the company's owner behind the scenes.
He looked hesitantly at Freya sitting in the wheelchair and decided to play it safe by making a phone call first. "Please wait, I'll call my supervisor."
With that, he picked up his phone and called his supervisor, saying there was a woman at the building entrance claiming to be Elizabeth's mother.
In the office, Seraphina was discussing new company strategies with Robbie when she received an internal call from Jacob. When Seraphina heard that Freya was downstairs, she paused for a moment.
What was Freya doing at the company all of a sudden?
Seraphina was puzzled, but she still had Jacob go downstairs to bring her up.
"Mr. Ellis, let's continue this later."
Robbie nodded, picked up his laptop, and left the office first.
Jacob had seen how Freya used to treat Elizabeth. Freya and Elizabeth had been estranged for so long - he wondered what reason brought Freya here suddenly.
A few minutes later, Jacob walked to the company building entrance and saw Freya sitting in her wheelchair.
Freya didn't look well.
She appeared so thin she was just skin and bones.
Jacob stepped forward, bowed slightly, and said politely, "Hello, Mrs. Nightingale. I'm Ms. Penrose's assistant. Ms. Penrose has asked you to come up."
Freya nodded, signaling the caregiver to push her and follow Jacob into the building.
Arriving at Seraphina's office door, Jacob knocked gently, then pushed the door open and said respectfully to Seraphina, "Chairwoman Penrose, Mrs. Nightingale is here."
Seraphina looked up toward the door.
When Freya saw Seraphina, her expression was very complicated.
It was that chubby girl she'd seen at the restaurant.
The caregiver pushed Freya into the office. After the caregiver left, Freya looked at Seraphina and asked in confusion, "What's your relationship with Elizabeth?"
Seraphina smiled. "Elizabeth is my mommy. My name is Seraphina."
Freya froze instantly, her eyes widening as if she'd heard something incredible.
She stared at Seraphina, her lips trembling slightly, her voice filled with disbelief and shock. "What? You are... you're not..."
Seraphina's face still wore a gentle smile as she repeated, "I'm Elizabeth's daughter."
Freya's thoughts became a bit muddled, her emotions complicated.
Freya didn't know Seraphina was alive.
Seraphina took the initiative to ask, "Are you looking for my mommy? What is it about?"
Freya was overwhelmed with mixed feelings for a moment. After she collected her emotions, she said, "I want to see your mother."
This wasn't something Seraphina could decide. She smiled lightly. "I need to call and ask. If Mommy doesn't want to see you, there's nothing I can do."
Freya forced a smile, her voice trembling a bit. "I... I really have something important to discuss with your mother."
Seraphina nodded and said, "Okay, I'll call and ask. Please wait a moment."
With that, Seraphina took out her phone, walked to the side, and dialed Elizabeth's number.
After the call connected, Seraphina briefly explained Freya's situation.
"Mommy, Mrs. Nightingale is in the office now. She says she has something important and wants to see you. What do you think?"
"Timothy, I'm on the phone, stop it." Elizabeth helplessly glared at Timothy, who was kissing her all over.
Elizabeth's voice still carried a hint of breathlessness.
Seraphina felt a bit awkward and embarrassedly moved the phone away.
She waited a while, figuring Elizabeth had dealt with Timothy, before they could finally have a normal phone conversation.
Elizabeth's tone on the other end was flat. "Tell her I won't see her."
Someone who hadn't been in touch for so long suddenly coming to find her - Elizabeth had a feeling it wasn't good news.
Seraphina said okay and hung up. She looked at Freya. "Mrs. Nightingale, I'm really sorry, my mommy says she won't see you."
Freya's expression instantly became even more distressed. She wanted to say something. "Can I call her myself?"
Just as Timothy was about to start making love, Elizabeth's phone rang again.
A moment of silence.
Elizabeth heartlessly turned off her phone. Although it was Seraphina calling, she'd better turn it off first, otherwise Timothy's resentment would fill the whole room.
Seraphina suddenly couldn't get through. A moment of silence.
Seraphina found it secretly amusing, but facing Freya, she still said politely, "Mommy's phone isn't going through. She's probably busy right now."
"I see." Freya's voice carried a hint of sadness.
Seraphina went to open the door and called the caregiver in. The caregiver came in and pushed Freya out.
Freya was slowly pushed away from Seraphina Enterprises by the caregiver, her mood very heavy.
She had originally held a glimmer of hope that she could see Elizabeth, but Elizabeth's rejection made her heart sink completely to the bottom.
At this moment, Freya thought of her husband Russell, who had always doted on her.
Russell.
Freya's lips trembled.
Juniper received a call from the hospital and only then learned that Freya wasn't at the hospital.
She was chatting and flattering each other with some aristocratic women. Receiving such a call during such a pleasant time really put her in a bad mood.
Juniper hung up and said helplessly to the aristocratic women, "My aunt-in-law isn't at the hospital, and I don't know where she went. Ladies, let me go make a phone call first."
She stood up and walked to a convenient place to make a call, the smile already completely gone from her face.
Juniper dialed the phone number of the caregiver responsible for looking after Freya. As soon as the call connected, she questioned, "Where are you right now?"
It wasn't the caregiver who answered Juniper on the other end, but Freya, who had taken the phone. "Juniper, I'm buying a watch for Gino."
Juniper breathed a sigh of relief, though her tone still carried reproach and concern. "Freya, you're not well. You can't just run around. We'll all worry."
Hearing Juniper's concerned words, Freya's heart grew even colder.
Freya simply responded, "I know. Don't mention the watch to Gino beforehand. I want to surprise him."
