Chapter 312 Seraphina Has a High Fever
The next morning.
When Elizabeth arrived at the company and got out of her car, she suddenly heard Wren rushing over with wailing cries.
The bodyguards immediately blocked Wren from getting close to Elizabeth.
"Ma'am, I'm begging you, please let my grandson go. He's still young. Please give him a chance to turn over a new leaf!"
Wren knelt on the ground, crying her heart out.
Elizabeth was caught off guard by Wren's sudden action.
Where did Wren come from?
It was rush hour right now.
Elizabeth glanced around. Employees and pedestrians coming and going had all stopped to watch. People who didn't know what was happening might think Elizabeth had done something wrong.
Elizabeth calmly signaled the bodyguards to help Wren up, but Wren refused to stand.
"Get up first, let's talk properly," Elizabeth frowned, her voice cold as she asked, "Who is your grandson?"
Wren sobbed, "Ms. Penrose, my grandson is Hugo. He knows he was wrong now. I'm begging you to give him a chance, please let him go."
Elizabeth suddenly understood - so Wren was Hugo's grandmother.
"Your grandson talked someone into committing arson. He broke the law and got people killed. I'm not a judge, so coming to me won't help," she said with a cold smile, "Take this lady to the police station."
Hearing this, Wren's face immediately turned ugly. She struggled to get up and pointed at Elizabeth, cursing, "I curse your future children to come to no good end! You're destroying the Reed family's bloodline - may you die a horrible death!"
Hearing Wren's curse, Elizabeth's face instantly darkened.
Elizabeth walked into the company without looking back, only saying coldly, "Take her to the police station."
The bodyguards quickly pulled Wren into the car. Wren continued cursing, her voice shrill, until suddenly the sound stopped abruptly.
Wren's mouth had been taped shut.
Elizabeth returned to her office and called Robbie on the intercom.
"Robbie, come in for a moment."
Wren suddenly showing up to cause trouble for Elizabeth - Elizabeth didn't mind making Maddox and the others even busier.
Robbie knocked and entered, "Chairwoman Penrose."
Elizabeth opened a file and said coldly, "Have someone tell Wren the real truth about Hugo's arrest. Tell her that Hugo was working for Maddox."
"Mr. Hayes has been wanting to cause trouble for Maddox, hasn't he? Help him."
Robbie nodded, understanding Elizabeth's meaning, "I'll arrange it right away."
After Robbie left the office, Elizabeth leaned back in her chair, closed her eyes, and tried to calm herself down.
Seraphina was Elizabeth's untouchable bottom line. Even just a curse - Elizabeth didn't want to let it slide.
For Wren to dare come to Seraphina Enterprises to make a scene, it was probably Maddox and the others' doing.
Elizabeth thought of Otha - maybe she could use Otha to make Maddox and the others turn on each other.
She called Jacob to come in.
Jacob was once again entrusted with an important task by Elizabeth.
Meanwhile, in Whispering Town.
Some of Mason's little friends came to find him to go fishing in the river.
They saw Seraphina crouching by the well washing clothes.
Several children gathered around. One boy pointed at Seraphina's face and asked Mason curiously, "Mason, why is her face wrapped up? She looks like a ghost."
Seraphina kept her head down washing clothes. She didn't look up at them.
Mason, holding his fishing rod, frowned and replied, "I don't know. Let's hurry and go dig for worms."
The friends happily ran out.
Seraphina's two small hands struggled to scrub the adults' clothes. She raised her hand and couldn't help scratching at the gauze on her face.
Her face had been itchy all this time, and she couldn't help scratching it now and then.
When Milan and Zara, the couple, brought Seraphina home, they made up a story for the neighbors.
They said Seraphina's face had been burned, and her family didn't want her anymore.
Milan and Zara felt sorry for her, so they brought her back to do some work around the house. At least they would feed her so she wouldn't starve.
The neighbors felt a bit sorry for Seraphina when they heard this, but didn't say much more.
Milan's wife Zara came out of the house stretching. Seeing that Seraphina had stopped scrubbing the clothes, she frowned, "Echo, wash faster. How long do you want to take? The sun's about to set!"
Seraphina didn't dare keep scratching her face. She lowered her head and continued scrubbing the clothes hard.
She had learned to read people's moods now.
She tried not to make Zara angry.
Zara walked to the well, looked at Seraphina's movements, and said unhappily, "Echo, scrub harder. At noon, I'll teach you how to cook."
Milan and his wife now called Seraphina "Echo."
Seraphina was still young now. When she grew up, she would naturally forget her original name.
Zara planned to have Seraphina do all the housework from now on.
She glanced at the dirty gauze on Seraphina's face and frowned, feeling a bit disgusted.
"Echo, don't move."
Zara pressed down on Seraphina's head. Finding where the gauze started, she roughly tore off the tape and unwrapped the bandage.
The gauze had been stuck to the surgical wounds on Seraphina's face. Before the wounds had fully healed, Zara yanked the gauze so hard.
The gauze tore away, taking skin and flesh with it, causing fresh bleeding.
"It hurts, it hurts, it hurts! Mommy, it hurts so much!"
Seraphina struggled, trying to pull her head away. The pain was unbearable.
Zara angrily slapped Seraphina, "Don't cry! Cry again and I'll hit you!"
Zara muttered that it hadn't healed yet.
Zara stuck the gauze back on.
Seraphina sat on the ground crying softly.
That night, Seraphina developed a high fever.
Whether it was because the wound on her face got infected, or because she'd been frightened during the day.
In the morning, when Mason got up looking for food, he habitually kicked Seraphina who was sleeping on the floor.
He kicked her a few times. Seeing no reaction, he immediately ran back to the room to call Milan, "Dad, Echo's dead."
Hearing this, Milan and Zara instantly woke up.
If Seraphina died, they wouldn't get the rest of the money.
Milan and Zara quickly got up and rushed to the kitchen.
Milan checked Seraphina's breathing, "She's still breathing. Her forehead is very hot - looks like she has a fever."
Zara breathed a sigh of relief. She smacked Mason on the head, "Stop talking nonsense. I'll go get fever medicine."
Village people were used to buying over-the-counter medicine for colds and fevers.
To them, taking medicine would naturally bring the fever down.
Zara came back with medicine, crushed it, put it in water, and carefully fed it into Seraphina's mouth.
Milan frowned. He looked at Zara angrily, "Have her sleep in the storage room. Get her a mat and blanket."
Zara nodded, "Okay, I'll prepare it."
The storage room was filled with all kinds of junk, and the air was thick with a musty smell.
Zara cleared out a space in the storage room.
She found an old mat to lay on the floor and got a worn-out blanket.
After Zara finished tidying up, she went to the kitchen to carry Seraphina to the storage room.
Zara placed Seraphina on the mat, pulled the blanket over her, yawned, and walked out of the storage room.
What a hassle so early in the morning.
Zara cursed a few times and went back to her room to continue sleeping.
Seraphina was burning up in a daze. Under the covers, her tiny body trembled slightly from the high fever.
"Daddy, Mommy, it hurts so much."
