Chapter 111 Awkward
Sophia was taken aback; this answer shocked her.
Unconvinced, she continued to sow discord, "No man would give a woman money for no reason unless they have a special relationship. Ryan, do you really not care at all?"
Ryan's voice was icy as he said, "Are you done?"
"What? Yes, I'm done," Sophia stammered.
Ryan's tone was harsh, "Ms. Brown, please stop your little tricks."
He hung up the phone.
Listening to the busy tone on the phone, Sophia was furious.
She couldn't understand how Amelia had bewitched these people. Why did everyone like her so much? The bias is just downright baffling.
She thought those who liked Amelia must have something wrong with their judgment, including Royce!
At the same time, in Antique Charm, she opened the genealogy book for cleaning. As she was doing so, she discovered that the Martin family was indeed a large family, with names that were all elegant and meaningful.
As she was nearing the last few pages, she suddenly saw a familiar name, Brandon Martin.
This was Ryan's grandfather's name.
Then she discovered that Brandon and Christopher's grandfather, Albert Martin, were actually cousins! This was astonishing!
After being silent for a while, she felt she should tell Ryan about this significant discovery.
She put down the genealogy book and saw that the clock on the wall was almost nine o'clock. Amelia asked the driver, Emory, to take her back to The Martin Villa. By the time she got back, it was almost ten o'clock.
As soon as Amelia entered, she smelled a strong scent of alcohol in The Martin Villa.
She found Ryan sitting on the sofa, his handsome and noble face expressionless, brows furrowed, and deep eyes filled with gloom.
Amelia changed her shoes and walked over, asking him, "Why did you drink so much?"
Ryan responded in a low voice without looking at her.
Feeling that he was in a bad mood, Amelia continued to ask, "Was tonight's social event not successful?"
"Successful," Ryan replied perfunctorily.
Amelia was a bit dazed, thinking he was just impatient because he drank too much, so she said, "I'll get you some hangover medicine."
As she turned to walk towards the kitchen, Ryan grabbed her. He lifted her chin, and lightly bit her nose, then moved to her lips for a soft kiss.
After a moment, Ryan let go.
Amelia felt a bit disappointed. In the past, whenever he kissed her on the lips, it always led to a deep kiss, but now it ended with just a peck.
Amelia asked in surprise, "What's wrong with you today?"
Ryan rubbed his temples and replied impatiently, "You're preparing for pregnancy and I drank, so I don't want to pass the smell of alcohol to you."
This reason for preparing for pregnancy seemed rather far-fetched.
Ryan walked upstairs. Amelia, afraid he might stumble and fall after drinking, so she quickly followed and supported his arm. She was talking about her discovery today, "I took on a job to restore a genealogy book today and saw Grandpa's name, Brandon. Grandpa and Christopher's grandpa are actually cousins, so you and Christopher are..."
"Just a coincidence," Ryan interrupted her decisively, his voice cold as he declared, "I have no relationship with Christopher."
Amelia paused, "Alright."
He went straight into the bathroom. She was about to follow to help.
Unexpectedly, he closed the door. Looking at the bathroom door, she felt a bit blocked. Soon, the sound of running water came from inside as he started to shower.
She stood silently for a while, then turned and went downstairs to the kitchen to prepare some hangover medicine.
She brought the prepared hangover medicine directly to the bedroom.
Not long after, he came out of the shower, looking stern in a black robe. She stared at him for a while and felt quite stifled.
Amelia handed him the hangover medicine and said, "The temperature is just right, drink it."
Ryan took the bowl and drank it all in one go. After drinking, he lifted the quilt and lay down on the bed. Amelia also lay down beside him and hugged him. She asked, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing," he said lightly.
But it didn't seem like nothing, the atmosphere was heavy.
She sat up, took a deep breath, and said, "We are husband and wife, it's best to talk things out! You being like this makes me uncomfortable too. I really cherish our relationship and carefully maintain our marriage!"
Ryan tried to hide the complex emotions in his heart and said softly, "I also cherish our relationship."
Amelia didn't believe him and looked into his eyes. She said, "I think you have something on your mind tonight."
He didn't want to say it was because she was getting too close to Christopher.
Moreover, it was all work-related and every time Amelia explained everything clearly, so he couldn't find any fault.
Despite this, he still felt uncomfortable.
Especially today when he received a call from Sophia, saying Christopher gave Amelia a million dollars for restoration fees.
His woman didn't need Christopher to pretend to be generous. Who needed his money? But Ryan couldn't say this, it would make him seem petty and unreasonable, and make Amelia feel he was too controlling.
He didn't want to push her too hard, fearing she would leave him.
Ryan said, "I'm really fine, let's sleep."
Ryan turned off the bedside lamp.
In the dark, Amelia gazed at his profile for a while and silently pondered the reason. After a while, she said softly, "Christopher's genealogy book was taken to Antique Charm for Mr. Greer to restore. Mr. Greer said to leave it to me. If you don't want me to, I'll give it to Mr. Greer to restore tomorrow."
Ryan said calmly, "No need, it's your job, you do it."
"But I feel like you're not very happy," Amelia looked into his eyes.
Ryan replied, "I'm happy."
It didn't sound like he was happy.
Amelia took a deep breath and said, "Tell me, what can I do to make you happy?"
Ryan sighed, "Just do what you need to do, I'll adjust my mindset."
Amelia gently touched his cheek and kissed his lips.
She wasn't very good at comforting people, but recently she learned to ease relationships. For example, when he was angry, she would kiss and hug, and making love would make things better. She tried it a few times, and it worked every time.
She tried this method again tonight, but Ryan gently pushed her away and turned over.
Amelia felt her dignity was trampled, so she also turned over, back to him.
After several minutes, she vaguely heard Ryan say, "I drank today, you're preparing for pregnancy, let's make love another day."
In the past, when he drank, his desire would be stronger than usual. He was deliberately rejecting her goodwill!
That night, Amelia lay in bed, tossing and turning until very late before falling asleep.
