Chapter 56 Chapter 56
"Doc. Jade? Hello?
I snapped back to reality when I noticed the doctor waving his hand in front of my face.
“Ahhh… s-sorry, Doc. Jeggo. How is he?” I asked anxiously. Luckily, I still had his contact; otherwise, I wouldn’t have known who to call earlier. It was also a relief that he wasn’t in the operating room and was able to attend to my patient.
“Well, Mr. Alex experienced a mild stroke—technically, a transient ischemic attack. Good thing you brought him in early. If you had waited any longer, it could’ve progressed into something more serious,” he explained.
I glanced at Sir Alex, lying on the hospital bed, IV attached, slightly weak but conscious. I breathed a sigh of relief. I couldn’t imagine what would have happened if I hadn’t noticed in time—maybe we would’ve been caught in the middle of the road.
“So, it’s confirmed, it was a mild stroke…” I muttered, then turned my attention back to Doc. Jeggo. He nodded.
“Yes. The drooping on one side of his face and the slurred speech were early signs. The scan shows a brief blockage in the blood flow to his brain, but it has already cleared. Still, he needs strict monitoring for the next twenty-four hours.”
“Will he recover completely?” I asked further.
“He should, as long as he follows the medications and lifestyle changes we’ll prescribe. This episode is a warning—not yet damage, but a sign to slow down.”
I nodded. “I’ll make sure he gets proper rest and follow-up care.”
“Good. Most people ignore mild strokes because they think they’re nothing serious. But in medicine, a second chance rarely comes twice,” he said, staring at me for a long moment. I was surprised when he wiped my cheek. I was about to speak when he cut in first.
“You’re really attached to your patient, and why are you so teary-eyed, Doc. Jade? Is he your husband’s father?”
I rolled my eyes. Another nosy one. No wonder the news didn’t escape him either. “No, he’s the driver. Why do you ask? Can you, for once, let me rest from all the issues? That’s why I didn’t want to come back here!”
“Well, you can’t escape this place,” he said, putting his hands in his pockets. He looked arrogant at times. You wouldn’t guess he’s a doctor. With the way his hair is styled, he looks like he’s just posing for the nurses. “Because your mom is here. Aren’t you going to visit her? At her office? I’m sure she’s expecting you to drop by.”
“Well, I’m sure she knows I’m here, but I’m not going to see her.”
I remembered the last message she sent me. No way I’ll show myself to her. Just coming here was already a mistake. If it weren’t necessary—if it weren’t a mild stroke—I wouldn’t have hesitated to look for another hospital.
“What a waste, but I guess I should just be thankful. Because I’m the lucky one.”
“Why?”
“Because you came to see me.” He pinched my chin, making me grimace. I slapped his hand, making him flinch.
“Heh! Stop it! You’re just trying to make yourself famous!”
“You’re right. Come on, let’s take a selfie. I’m sure the med students will swarm me when they find out you’re my friend.”
“I don’t want to! Move! Go away!”
“Wow, huh? Like I haven’t done you any favors? Remember before, I was the one you used for venipuncture! How many veins did I offer for you, right? Now it’s just a selfie! Come on!” He grabbed me and took his phone from his pocket. I couldn’t do anything as he held it in front of our faces. I just shook my head as he quickly posted it with the caption: “Everything I do, I do it, A1 flawless.”
I just shook my head again—what does that caption have to do with the picture? My god.
“Nice caption, huh. My comment section got flooded instantly. You’re something else, Doc. Jade. Thank you!”
“I don’t know what’s wrong with you! I’m already regretting coming here. I’ll delete your number next time!” I snapped, which only made him laugh.
“You won’t do that. I’m the only one on your side in this hospital, Doc. Jade. Remember?”
I fell silent. He was right… Ever since I started working here, he’s been the only one who stood by me. Why did I forget that he even existed? I was so consumed by anger that I erased from my memory even the people who used to be close to me.
“And I’ll remain on your side, Doc. Jade. Congrats, because you’re finally married. I’m really, really happy for you. I’m sure your businessman husband takes good care of you. Wait, I remember—now that you’re married, does your husband also know about that thing?”
I froze for a moment. Right… he does know about it. I shook my head. “No… not yet… I can’t tell him. Do you think he’ll accept me once he finds out?”
“Well, if he truly loves you, he’ll understand.”
That was it. Negative.
He held my shoulder and gave it a few pats. “You have nothing to worry about. You’re easy to love and understand. And any man would be content to have you as a wife. You already have everything. Valedictorian in elementary and high school. Summa cum laude in college, top 1 in the PLE. What else? Hmmm… kind, beautiful—”
“Crazy!” I hissed.
“Sexy…”
“You’re a pervert too, you know?”
He laughed but continued his talk. “Hardworking… simple, and one more thing, you have a heart for other people. Just imagine, you saved someone on a plane even though you didn’t know them, and now you immediately brought your husband’s so-called driver here. So whatever difference you’re worried about, I’m sure it doesn’t matter. Someone who truly loves you won’t see any lack or flaw in you, because everything about you is beautiful.”
I smiled. I didn’t expect to hear those things from him—especially at a time like this. It warmed my heart. Somehow, the heaviness of coming here was eased.
Doc. Jeggo finally said goodbye to me. I was about to go back to Sir Alex to check on him when my phone rang. My forehead automatically twitched.
What’s this? Did he mess with my phone? Why is his number saved here?
I was about to answer the call when it ended. A message from him followed.
