Sade
She is looking at tons of pictures of our kids, from the time they were born until just recently. I’ve had to find pictures of the kids recently that didn’t show anything of Rain. You could see the fakeness all over her face, and I don’t want her to see any of that.
I have her family, Tomilino, and Dominick working on a huge project for me right now. We are trying to set some things up for when she comes home, as well as other things I need to show her to help move along my narrative. I am praying all of this works. Right now, it seems that it is, but I know she’s still really overwhelmed.
She keeps whispering the kids' names over and over as she looks at their pictures. She seems really fascinated by them. I’m hoping that is some of her strong maternal instinct kicking in. Although she may not have the memories, I’m hoping she still feels the connection to them. I am also hoping that they respond to her the way that they did that day in the nursery when they all laughed together, and they knew it was her.
“She has such an unusual name. Where did I get that? Do you know?” I smile.
“Sweetheart, your family is from Ireland, the O’Connors; that is where you got our son’s name. So, her name is Irish Gaelic, and it means Freedom Life, which I’m not sure why you wanted that, but I told you that you could pick our kid’s names, so that was what it was. I think Saoirse is extremely pretty, and it’s unique, and I like that.” I watched her smile and nod.
“You said they knew about everything, right? I mean, I feel really bad in a way. I hurt so much when you told me my mom was dead, and she’d been killed in a car accident. However, when you said an accident with my dad and uncles is what landed me in here, and that they all died, but I honestly don’t have any memory of any of them, so it doesn’t really hurt me so much about all of that? I wonder if my family will be mad about me feeling that way?” I pondered that for a moment.
“Honey, they are just glad you are alive and getting better. They don’t hold your memory loss against you in any way. They want you to get well and start living your life. They are all mourning your dad and uncles, but they understand that it’s different for you. Eventually we might go over and see them, or you might just stick with phone calls or video calls.” I shrugged.
They were aware of her memory loss, and had helped me by sending me pictures I could show her. There were even some of them with the kids. I would, however, kill every single one of them before I ever let them touch her if they found out she was the one who actually killed Barnabas, Samuel, and Niel. That would go to the grave with me.
I was also racking my brain about what I could and couldn’t tell her about our life and our families. Things were probably going to come out at some point in time. My thought had been to address it when she asked, rather than trying to explain things to her now. If I overloaded her with too much, not only could it cause us problems, it might also do more harm than good to her. The Russo family and what we did didn’t need to affect her right now. When it inevitably came up later, I’d deal with it. Until then, I went with the whole thing that she didn’t need to know.
We both look to the door when the doctor comes in. “Well, Rain, how are you feeling today?”
She smiles just a bit, “I”m physically doing okay; the headache isn’t too bad today. The rest is still a bit much, honestly.”
He nods, “Well, the results of all of the tests are in.” I held my breath for a moment.
He crossed his arms in the whole ‘doctor’ stance thing. “We have seen some damaged areas of the brain in some of the scans. What that means is you are both tremendously lucky and facing some challenges. One, you are very lucky in that you are alive, you are healthy, your baby is healthy, and there is no physical impairment from the damage sustained. The challenges are that the area affected has to do with memory, and with that damage, the idea of your memory ever returning is slim to none. So, honestly, I don't expect you to ever recover the memory that you have lost.”
I heard her take a deep breath and let it out. “So, I won’t ever remember the last thirteen years, basically? Never remember my wedding or the birth of my two children, or anything in there?” I can see some tears running down her face.
He gave her a sympathetic look. “No, I honestly don’t think that with the damage your brain sustained in that particular area, you will ever get those memories back. However, you are alive to make new memories. You have all of your faculties and have all of your physical abilities. Some therapists might be able to assist, as they specialize in traumatic brain injury and the results of such.” I nodded.
“I’ll look into that, and if she decides she’d like to speak to someone, then we’ll reach out.” The doctor nodded.
“If you need anything further from me, please don’t hesitate to reach out. With the tests concluded and your physical recovery. We are going to plan to discharge you tomorrow morning.” I nodded, and so did Rain.
He came over and patted her on the leg and then nodded to me before he left, closing the door behind him. She burst into tears, so I climbed up on the bed and pulled her into my arms. She clung to me, and I had to hide my delight at her doing so. I knew she would never understand how amazing this was for me, for her to cling to me like this.
She would never get those memories back. I felt like I had been granted my greatest wish. The ability to build a life with her where I was able to have her, our kids, and make her happy, finally, after all of this time. I could finally really make her happy. Now, I just had to get her integrated into our lives and get things moving in the right direction.
