Marcus Revealed
The stone platform beneath Lucas and Elijah split open with a thunderous crack. They leaped apart just as a stream of red energy shot upward between them, barely missing them both.
"Too slow, Marcus," Lucas growled, rolling to his feet.
Marcus laughed, the sound no longer even slightly human. His body began to change before their eyes. His skin peeled away like burning paper, showing not flesh and bone but swirling magical energy—reds and blacks coiling together like angry snakes.
"This was never my true form," Marcus said, his voice coming from everywhere at once. "I've worn many faces over the centuries. This is just the latest mask I've discarded."
Elijah shot a stream of fire at the thing Marcus had become, but the flames passed right through him, doing no damage at all.
"What are you?" Elijah asked.
The energy being that was Marcus expanded, getting taller than the massive crystal heart behind him. "I am the collector. The consumer of power. And soon, I will be a god."
Lucas gathered shadows in his hands, looking for any weakness. "You're no god. Just a parasite feeding on stolen magic."
Marcus's energy form pulsed brighter. "Such harsh words for an old friend, Lucas. Have you forgotten how I saved you when you were just a pathetic human? How I gave you the gift of wolf magic?"
Lucas's silver eyes narrowed. "You never gave me anything. You used me—just like you've used everyone."
"Did I?" Marcus's form shrank, taking on a more wolflike shape again. "Or did I see potential in a human boy that no one else did? I made you an alpha when our kind would have left you to die."
Lucas felt Elijah's hand on his shoulder, steadying him. Their bond hummed with shared power.
"Don't listen to him," Elijah said. "He's trying to get in your head."
Marcus turned his attention to Elijah. "And you, fire wolf. So quick to judge. Did you never wonder why your father disappeared all those years ago? Why he abandoned his precious son?"
Elijah tensed. "What do you know about my father?"
"Everything." Marcus's form changed, and suddenly he looked exactly like an older version of Elijah—same copper hair, same amber eyes. "Because I was there when he made his choice."
Elijah stumbled backward in shock. "No. That's impossible."
"Your father was weak," Marcus said, still wearing the face of Elijah's father. "He discovered what I was doing—collecting alpha power—and threatened to expose me. So I gave him a choice: his life or his son's."
Elijah's flames flickered around his clenched hands. "You're lying."
"Am I? Why do you think I waited so long to move against you and Lucas? I promised your father I'd spare you if he sacrificed himself. And I keep my promises... for a time."
Lucas felt Elijah's pain and rage through their bond. He sent back calm and strength, unwilling to let Marcus drive a wedge between them.
"Enough games," Lucas said. "What do you really want?"
Marcus's form changed back to his energy state. "What I've always wanted. To unite all alpha power in one being. Me." He pointed to the crystal heart. "This is just the beginning. Every alpha who has ever lived has left a trace of their power in The Void. I've been collecting it, drop by drop, for millennia."
"And the First Ones?" Elijah asked. "Where do they fit in?"
Marcus laughed. "There are no First Ones. Just me, wearing different faces, playing different roles. The shadow puppeteer behind every legend."
The news hit Lucas like a physical blow. Everything they'd feared, everything they'd fought against—it was all Marcus. Always had been.
"But why?" Lucas asked. "Why pit our packs against each other? Why the feud between shadow and fire wolves?"
"Division makes you weak," Marcus said frankly. "United, the alphas might have sensed what I was doing. Divided, you were too busy fighting each other to notice me feeding on your conflicts."
A noise from behind made them all turn. A figure stumbled onto the platform, bleeding and tired but somehow still standing.
"Thomas?" Lucas gasped.
Thomas looked terrible. The black veins still covered most of his body, but his eyes were clear—his own again, not burning red.
"I followed your scent," Thomas said weakly. "Fought off the possession long enough to find you."
Marcus hissed in anger. "Impossible! Once claimed, no wolf breaks free of my control."
Thomas straightened, his face set with determination despite his clear pain. "You forgot one thing, Marcus. Before I was an alpha or even a wolf, I was their friend." He nodded toward Lucas and Elijah.
"Thomas," Lucas said, moving toward his old friend. "How did you get here?"
"Nova helped me," Thomas stated. "She found a way to temporarily block the possession. It won't last long, but long enough to tell you the truth."
"What truth?" Elijah asked.
Thomas's eyes locked on Marcus. "I remember everything now. The night you came to our village, three hundred years ago. You weren't saving Lucas from hunters—you were the hunter."
Lucas felt cold all over. "What are you talking about?"
"He attacked our village," Thomas said. "Killed everyone. You tried to fight him, Lucas. A human boy with a pitchfork against a monster." Thomas's voice broke. "You were so brave."
Memories flashed through Lucas's mind—fragments he'd long buried. Blood. Screams. His family falling one by one.
"You were dying," Thomas continued. "And he offered you a choice—become a wolf or die with the rest."
"And you chose power," Marcus said, almost proudly. "Even then, you hungered for it."
"No," Lucas whispered. "I chose survival."
"What about Thomas?" Elijah asked. "Why was he turned?"
Thomas smiled sadly. "I wasn't supposed to survive. I was hiding in the barn when Marcus attacked. When I saw what he did to Lucas, I ran at him with an ax."
"Such spirit in a human child," Marcus said. "I decided two experiments were better than one."
Fury built in Lucas's chest, his shadows twisting around him. "You destroyed our entire village, murdered our families, and then made us forget? Made us think you'd saved us?"
"Memory is such a malleable thing in newly turned wolves," Marcus said dismissively. "I gave you both a gift. Made you into something greater than human."
"You made us into weapons," Thomas said. "Tools for your plans."
Lucas noticed something strange happening to the crystal heart behind Marcus. With each reveal, each truth spoken aloud, tiny cracks spread across its surface.
Elijah noticed too. Through their bond, Lucas felt Elijah's realization: The heart was fueled by lies and secrets. Truth weakened it.
"That's why you kept us apart all these years," Elijah said aloud. "Why you fed the hatred between shadow and fire wolves. You were afraid of what would happen if we shared our stories, found our connections."
"Found each other," Lucas added, reaching for Elijah's hand.
Marcus's energy form flickered, growing unsteady. "Enough! It doesn't matter what you know now. The ritual is almost complete."
He surged forward, tendrils of energy wrapping around Thomas's neck. "I'll start with him. The power of a corrupted alpha will feed the heart nicely."
"No!" Lucas and Elijah shouted together.
As Thomas fought in Marcus's grip, his eyes began to glow red again, the possession taking hold once more. He looked at Lucas one last time, his face clear for just a moment.
"Remember who we were," Thomas gasped. "Before all this."
Then his eyes turned totally red, and he smiled with too many teeth.
"Too late," Marcus's voice came from Thomas's mouth. "He's mine again."
But Thomas wasn't looking at Lucas anymore. His hand moved to his chest, where something glowed beneath his shirt.
"What are you doing?" Marcus demanded, suddenly unsure.
Thomas pulled out a familiar object—a crystal shard, similar to the ones in Lucas's chest.
"Nova sends her regards," Thomas said in his own voice, fighting through the possession one last time.
And before anyone could stop him, he plunged the crystal into the heart of The Void.
