The Void
The huge doorway pulsed with sickly light as the First One's clawed hand reached for Marcus. Lucas didn't think—he just acted. He thrust his hand forward, shooting a blast of shadow energy toward the crystal on the altar.
"Elijah, now!" Lucas yelled.
Understanding quickly, Elijah shot a stream of fire alongside Lucas's shadows. Their combined magic hit the crystal just as Marcus grabbed it. The blast threw everyone backward. Lucas held tight to Elijah's hand as they were thrown through the air.
Instead of crashing to the ground, they kept falling—through space, through darkness, through cold that bit at their skin. The world spun around them. When they finally stopped, they were somewhere else entirely.
"What happened?" Elijah gasped, getting to his feet. "Where are we?"
They stood in a strange environment that wasn't quite solid. The ground beneath them shifted like smoke but somehow held their weight. The sky—if you could call it that—swirled with colors that shouldn't exist together.
"We're in The Void," Lucas said, his silver eyes searching their surroundings. "The real Void. Not just the border area Marcus was using."
"How did we get here?"
"The crystal." Lucas touched his chest where the pieces still glowed. "When our magic hit the other half, it must have created a portal."
A high-pitched whine cut through the air. Lucas spun around to see a creature unlike anything he'd ever encountered. It looked almost like a wolf, but its body was transparent, showing swirling darkness inside instead of guts. Its eyes were empty holes, and its mouth stretched incredibly wide.
"Don't move," Lucas whispered.
The creature circled them, smelling the air. More appeared from the mist-like ground, all with the same hungry look.
"What are they?" Elijah asked, his voice barely audible.
"Void Feeders," Lucas answered. "I've read about them in the ancient texts. They feed on negative emotions—fear, anger, jealousy."
As if to make his point, one of the creatures moved closer to them. Lucas felt a wave of doubt wash over him. Memories of his worst times with Elijah flashed through his mind—their bitter fights, the pain of blocking their bond.
Elijah gasped beside him. "I can feel it too. It's trying to make us fight."
The creature's mouth opened wider, showing rows of needle-like teeth. It seemed to grow stronger as Lucas's doubts grew.
"Our bond," Lucas said suddenly. "That's how we fight them." He squeezed Elijah's hand tighter, focusing on their link.
Warmth spread through Lucas as their bond pulsed with light. He pushed away the negative thoughts and focused instead on how it felt when their magic combined, on the relief of finding Elijah alive, on the way their hands fit together perfectly.
The thing shrieked and backed away.
"It worked!" Elijah said, his amber eyes bright with understanding. "Our bond repels them."
Using their connection, they made a shield of intertwined shadow and fire. The animals hissed but couldn't approach.
"We need to move," Lucas said. "Find a way back before Marcus completes the ritual."
They walked through the shifting scenery, staying close together. The Void Feeders followed at a distance, watching for any sign of weakness.
"Something's wrong with this place," Elijah noticed after they'd been walking for what felt like hours. "The air feels... sick."
Lucas nodded. "The Void shouldn't be like this. It's supposed to be a place of balance—shadow and light in perfect harmony. Marcus has corrupted it."
They climbed a hill and stopped short. Below them stretched a vast field of sparkling crystal cages. Inside each cage was a wolf—some in human form, others in wolf form, all looking weakened and tired.
"Are those..." Elijah's voice trailed off in horror.
"Alphas," Lucas confirmed. "Dozens of them. Some look ancient—from packs that disappeared centuries ago."
They hurried down the hill toward the nearest cage. Inside was an old woman with silver hair and faded blue eyes. Despite her weakened state, she carried herself with grace.
"Who are you?" Lucas asked, putting his hand on the crystal bars.
"Alpha Serena of the Northern Lakes Pack," she answered, her voice thin but proud. "Who asks?"
"Lucas Blackwood and Elijah Darkhaven," Elijah replied. "We're trying to stop Marcus Bloodfang from opening a doorway to the First Ones."
Serena's eyes widened. "You're too late. He's been preparing for this for centuries. This place—these cages—they're batteries."
"Batteries?" Lucas repeated.
"He's draining our alpha power," she stated. "Each of us was lured here, trapped, and connected to The Void. Our magic feeds his ritual." She pointed to a crystal embedded in the floor of her cage. "These crystals channel our power to him."
Elijah knelt to examine the rock. "It's the same type that was broken between Lucas and me."
"The Bonding Crystal," Serena nodded. "An ancient artifact meant to unite true mates. Marcus perverted its purpose."
Lucas felt sick. "He's been collecting alphas to power his ritual. How many are there?"
"Twenty-seven of us," Serena said. "The magic number for the ancient ritual of summoning."
"Can we free you?" Elijah asked.
Serena shook her head. "Not while the master crystal remains intact. Break that, and our cages will shatter."
"Where is the master crystal?" Lucas asked.
"At the heart of The Void. A place no living wolf has ever returned from." Serena's eyes locked with Lucas's. "But if any might succeed, it would be a pair of bonded alphas."
A tremor ran through The Void. The ground beneath them rippled like water.
"The ritual is progressing," Serena said urgently. "You must hurry."
"Which way to the heart?" Elijah asked.
Serena pointed to a faraway mountain that pulsed with red light. "There. But beware—The Void itself will fight you. And Marcus has guardians."
As if called by her warning, several larger Void Feeders emerged from the mists. But these were different—they had physical form, with black fur and glowing red eyes. The corruption that had hurt Thomas and the others.
"Marcus's possessed wolves," Lucas realized. "They followed us here."
The creatures growled, advancing slowly. Behind them came a familiar figure—Raven, her violet eyes now burning red, black veins spreading across her face.
"You can't stop what's coming," she said, her voice twisted. "The First Ones are already reaching through. This world will be remade in their image."
Lucas and Elijah stood back to back, their magics flaring.
"We need to get to that mountain," Lucas said quietly.
"There are too many of them," Elijah answered.
Lucas felt their bond pulse with power. An thought formed in his mind. "Do you trust me?"
"With my life," Elijah replied without hesitation.
"Then hold on." Lucas gathered their combined power, dark and fire swirling together. With all his strength, he punched through the fabric of The Void itself, causing a tear in reality.
"Jump!" he shouted.
They leaped through the hole just as the possessed wolves lunged. They fell through nothingness, Elijah's hand gripped tightly in Lucas's.
They crashed onto a stone platform high on the mountain. The master crystal towered before them—a huge version of the one they shared, pulsing with stolen alpha power.
But they weren't alone.
Marcus stood before the crystal, his change nearly complete. His body had grown massive, fur black as pitch covering skin that cracked to show glowing red beneath. The First One's spirit was taking over.
He turned to them, his face barely recognizable as the wolf they once knew.
"Perfect timing," he growled, his voice layered with something old and terrible. "The ritual requires one final sacrifice—the willing blood of bonded alphas."
Behind him, the master crystal cracked open, showing not stone but a beating heart—massive and inhuman.
"The heart of The Void," Marcus said, smiling with too many teeth. "And soon, the heart of a god."
