Chapter 42: Origin Story
A blinding flash exploded when Thomas stabbed the crystal into the heart of The Void. Lucas threw himself over Elijah as the shockwave hit them, knocking everyone off their feet. The platform beneath them shook violently.
"Thomas!" Lucas yelled, searching through the swirling dust and magic.
But Thomas was gone. Where he had stood was now a spinning tornado of images—like a window into the past. Marcus screamed, his energy form being pulled toward it.
"What's happening?" Elijah gasped, grabbing Lucas's arm.
"The crystal—it's forcing The Void to reveal its secrets," Lucas said, watching as the vortex expanded.
Marcus thrashed wildly, strands of his energy self reaching for them. "Stop this! You don't know what you're doing!"
But it was too late. The vortex enveloped them all, and suddenly Lucas felt himself falling through time. Memories that weren't his own filled his mind. He could feel Elijah beside him, feeling the same thing—their bond keeping them anchored together as they tumbled through someone else's past.
The world rebuilt around them. They stood in a primitive town, watching a young man with fierce eyes working alone in a hut filled with strange potions and animal parts.
"Marcus," Elijah whispered. "Before he was a wolf."
The young Marcus mixed a bubbling mixture, his hands shaking with excitement. Outside his hut, locals were celebrating around a bonfire, but Marcus ignored them, focused entirely on his work.
"I can hear his thoughts," Lucas said in shock. "He was a human healer who became obsessed with immortality after his family died from disease."
They watched as Marcus drank his potion and collapsed in pain. His body convulsed, changing, bones cracking as he changed into something new—the first werewolf.
The scene changed. Years passed in moments. They saw Marcus finding his powers, learning to control them. Then came his darkest discovery—he could become stronger by taking the life force of others.
"He created more wolves," Elijah said as they watched Marcus bite chosen humans, turning them into his first pack. "Not out of loneliness, but to harvest their power later."
The memories spun faster. Centuries of Marcus moving from pack to pack, region to region, always in disguise, always feeding on the wolves he made.
Then the image slowed, showing a familiar village—Lucas's home.
Lucas's breath caught as he saw himself as a human boy, no more than sixteen, working in the fields with his family. "This is the night everything changed."
Marcus descended on the town like a storm, killing indiscriminately. They watched in fear as Lucas's human parents fell protecting their children. Young Lucas grabbed a stick, facing the monster alone.
"So brave," Elijah whispered, squeezing Lucas's hand. "Even then."
They saw Thomas hiding in the barn, then running out to help his friend when Lucas fell hurt. Marcus, impressed by their courage, chose to turn them both—the first time he had ever created two wolves at once.
"He linked us," Lucas realized as they watched Marcus performing a rite over their unconscious, newly-turned bodies. "That's why Thomas was able to resist his control long enough to help us."
The scene changed again. Now they saw Marcus creating the first divisions between wolf types, whispering lies to separate shadow wolves from fire wolves, ensuring they would be too busy fighting each other to notice his impact.
"All the hatred, all the wars—he engineered everything," Elijah said bitterly.
The vision shifted once more, showing Elijah's father facing a disguised Marcus. The similarity between Elijah and his father was striking—the same copper hair, the same determined expression.
"He discovered what Marcus was," Lucas said, watching the confrontation. "Your father found out the truth."
They watched as Elijah's father was given an impossible choice—his life or his son's. Without hesitation, he decided to sacrifice himself.
"He didn't abandon you," Lucas said softly. "He died protecting you."
Tears streamed down Elijah's face as he watched his father enter a ritual circle, allowing Marcus to drain his alpha power fully.
"Dad," he whispered.
But there was more. As Elijah's father lay dying, he cast a spell of his own—a prophecy that one day shadow and fire would join to end Marcus's reign.
"That's why Marcus worked so hard to keep our packs at war," Lucas said. "Your father's dying curse was that shadow and fire would be his downfall."
The vision began to split as Marcus's screams pierced through. His energy form was being torn apart by the discoveries.
"You weren't meant to see this!" Marcus howled. "None of you were supposed to know!"
A new image formed in the vortex—Aria Moonwhisper standing before the first Council of Wolves, speaking a prophecy: "When shadow and fire bond as one, The Void shall be sealed for all time. The thief of power will be undone by those he sought to divide."
"That's us," Elijah realized. "Our bond—it's not just about uniting the packs. It's about sealing The Void and stopping Marcus forever."
The tornado suddenly collapsed, bringing them back to the platform. Marcus's energy form had gotten unstable, parts of him flickering in and out of existence.
"It changes nothing!" Marcus growled, though his voice was weaker. "I've collected too much power for you to stop me now!"
The crystal heart behind him pulsed fiercely, cracks spreading across its surface. From those cracks, streams of different colored light began to escape—the stolen alpha power trying to return to its proper owners.
"We need to destroy the heart completely," Lucas said, gathering his shadows.
"Wait," Elijah grabbed his arm. "Look."
Thomas returned on the platform, the black veins receding from his body. Behind him were ghostly forms—dozens of them. The alphas whose power Marcus had stolen.
"I found them in the crystal," Thomas said, his voice louder. "They've been trapped here for centuries."
Among the ghosts, one stepped forward—a copper-haired man with Elijah's eyes.
"Father," Elijah whispered.
The spirit nodded, then pointed to the crystal heart. When he spoke, his voice echoed strangely: "The bond must be completed. Shadow and fire united will seal The Void."
"No!" Marcus lunged forward, his form shifting rapidly between energy and wolf. "I won't be imprisoned here!"
Lucas grabbed Elijah's hand, their powers immediately flowing together. "We need to complete the bond—fully. No barriers, no holding back."
"How?" Elijah asked.
"The mate mark," Lucas said. "It's the final step we never took."
Understanding dawned in Elijah's eyes. Without pause, he tilted his head, exposing his neck. "Do it."
Lucas's eyes glowed silver as he leaned forward and bit the point where Elijah's neck met his shoulder. Fire and shadow magic burst around them as the bond surged to completion.
Elijah gasped, then turned and returned the mark on Lucas's neck. Their combined power produced a whirlwind of perfectly balanced energy—shadow and fire intertwined.
Marcus screamed as the power hit him, pushing him back toward the crystal heart.
"This isn't over!" he howled. "I am eternal! I am—"
His words cut off as the spectral alphas surrounded him, each one recovering their stolen power. Marcus's form began to fall inward.
The crystal heart cracked further, the fissures widening. Light poured from it in blinding rays.
"It's working!" Thomas shouted over the roar of magic.
Lucas and Elijah stood firm, their completed bond forming a shield around them and Thomas. Through their connection, Lucas could feel Elijah's every emotion—his grief for his father, his joy at their union, his resolve to end Marcus's reign.
"Together," Lucas said, his voice merging with Elijah's as they spoke the same word.
They pushed the last of their united power toward the heart. The crystal shattered totally, the explosion sending everyone flying.
When Lucas could see again, the platform was gone. They floated in a void of stars and blackness. Marcus was nowhere to be seen, but the spirits of the alphas stayed, including Elijah's father.
"Is it over?" Elijah asked, still holding tight to Lucas's hand.
His father's spirit shook his head and pointed below them. There, in the starry void, a tiny seed of red energy pulsed weakly—the last trace of Marcus.
"He's weakened but not destroyed," Thomas said, joining them. "And now we're trapped here with him."
The spirit of Elijah's father approached them, his form getting clearer. When he spoke, his voice was sad: "To truly seal The Void, one of alpha blood must remain as its guardian."
Lucas and Elijah looked at each other in horror as the message became clear.
One of them would have to stay behind.
