Chapter 53 CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE
MAEVA
I will kill this witch. The way she’s looking at Caius leaves nothing up to interpretation. It’s clear as day what she wants. She moves from where she’s standing and comes to stand by his side and he doesn’t move. Even when her arm touches his, he doesn’t move.
“If you don’t stop looking at her, you’ll show everyone that the blockers no longer work.” Moira says in my head.
I take a deep breath and look away from them. She’s right, I can’t afford for Caius to find out what’s happening.
“She’s baiting you.” Moira adds.
I know she is but that’s not all there is to it. She wants him. If he looked her way for a second, she will fuck him right in front of me.
“And why would you think that?” Caius says, snapping me from my thoughts.
I try hard to remember what we were talking about before the witch started touching my mate. Fuck, I just referred to him as mine. Maeva stand up! Where is your spine?
“You report to your council and we have no idea what is said. If your council knows that the rogues can teleport, they could take us, drop us near our border and let the rogues come for us. Our brothers and sisters will sense the attack and will come to help, which means that there will be more witches for them to take.” Elaine says, looking lovingly into Caius’ eyes.
“We don’t know how many they are and we are powerless against them. I can’t imagine those Alpha’s that came here yesterday passing up on the chance to bring down witches and take over our territory.” Moira says.
Caius smiles and I feel it deep within me. I look away and walk to the wall. I shouldn’t be here when he is here. I need distance between us.
“Would it bring you some sort of peace to know that I have no desire to join in any war against witches?” he says.
“You might not but why should we trust the rest of your kind? You betrayed us once, nothing can stop you from doing it again, especially now that we’re powerless.” Moira says.
“Which brings us to the most important reason, we think someone, or more than one wolf on your council is behind this.” Elaine says.
She finally moves away from Caius and I feel like I can breathe again.
“That’s a bold accusation.” I say, glaring at her.
She shrugs. “Bold but true. Before this, rogues could not speak. Their minds were so far gone that they were mad. They died within two months after turning rogue so where are all these numbers coming from? Where is the coordination coming from? A sane wolf spoke to the witches and brought them out of our territory.” Elaine says.
The weight of what she said settled and I grudgingly agree with her. A sane wolf would’ve had to do this. Only an alpha could get witches that powerful to do anything for them and only one on the council could even speak to the witches.
“You’re not wrong.” Caius says, not surprised by their accusations.
This means he already suspects someone on the council. You can’t make such an accusation against the council so I understand why he has not said anything. Even if he is Caius, the council members are the most powerful wolves and to accuse one of them of something this serious without proof, is a death sentence.
Caius steps forward and cuts his wrist. He holds it out to Moira. “What if I swear not to be part of any plan like that and to make sure to inform you if anything like that is about to happen.”
“How would you know about it?” Moira asks skeptically.
“I have my ways.” Melo says, his hand still outstretched.
Elaine tries to take his hands but Moira beats her to it. “Swear that you won’t fuck Elaine.”
We’re all shocked by that addition. Moira’s interest in this is not coming from a place of jealousy, she doesn’t want Caius. Why is she so invested?
Caius laughs. He actually laughs genuinely. The sides of his eyes crinkle and his eyes shine with joy.
“I’m not adding it.” He says. “My wrist is starting to heal, are we doing this or not?”
My stomach drops and my vision blurs. Why doesn’t he want to add it? Does he want her? He hasn’t reacted to any of her advances but that could be for my benefit. Moira doesn’t say anything and I will her to press the issue. I didn’t know I needed that oath until she said it.
She finally cuts her wrist and says the spell for the blood pact. It wounds me that she didn’t insist they add the Elaine clause. After the spell is done, Caius takes back his hand and Elaine winks at me.
“The rogues can’t talk so we have nothing. Whenever you return from giving your council an update, we’ll go in together and see what we can get from them.” He says.
The witches agree and he turns and walks out.
“Be careful,” Moira says in my head. “Elaine can be dangerous and she will tell Caius if she notices something strange about your reaction.”
I nod and walk out of the cell. Caius is looking at portraits on the wall when I join him in the living room. He looks lost in thought and a dark voice inside of me whispers that he could be thinking of Elaine.
“You let her touch you and almost do circus tricks for your attention but me kissing Taron is a problem.” I say behind him.
He turns and looks very surprised to see me standing behind him. He gives me a blank look and I sigh.
“It’s suspicious that you didn’t swear not to fuck her.”
He smirks, folds his arms and leans back on the wall. “Are you jealous?”
I scoff like it’s outrageous. “Just pointing out the hypocrisy. Just so you know, if you fuck her then we’re more than even and you have to release me.”
He nods once. “I guess I won’t fuck her then.”
We stand there staring at each other before he raises his brows. “Do you want any other thing?”
“I want to go see my pack.” I blurt out. “It’s not right that I’ve not been to the pack for days. What is it going to cost me?”
I pray he says a kiss or more so I don’t expose myself, running into his arms and kissing him. I’ve tried not to think about last night but it’s a lost battle. I might not be recollecting every detail but my body remembers.
“What do you want to give for it?” he asks, his eyes dropping to my lips.
The hunger in his expression fuels me. I hate it when he acts cool, like he doesn’t want me. He starts walking toward a door and he opens it. He looks back at me and walks in. I stand outside for a few seconds before I follow him.
Here goes nothing.
