Chapter 109 CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINE
CLAYTON
This is the busiest our pack has been since I became beta. The pack house is crowded and people are stepping on each other. Caius and I were dragged out of bed an hour after we went to bed because a fight broke out between the two packs. We haven’t gone back to bed since and it is morning.
Apart from Maeva’s pack, other packs have begun moving their people here. Those ones are quieter about it and are just happy to have somewhere to be protected so we don’t have a problem with them.
I yawn and shake the sleep from my eyes. I have to be active if I’m going to get through the many things that need my attention.
“Clayton!” Taron calls from behind.
I turn and glare at him. He’s the beta of the pack that fought and he wasn’t dragged out of bed at night. He lives in my house and he didn’t even wake up to ask why I was leaving an hour after I came in. He looks so well rested.
“My alpha wants to see you in your alpha’s office.” He says.
What went wrong now? If I see Maeva, I’m going to talk to her about her Beta. He needs to start pulling his weight here. I follow him to the office in silence. With the mood I’m in, I don’t want to talk to anyone, much less him. I’m usually friendly, Caius is the grouch. I’m just exhausted from lack of sleep and I will snap at anybody.
A gust of wind blows and a precious scent wafts through my nose. Could it be? I stop walking and turn. I sniff the air for the direction the scent went to and I get it. I start walking towards it when Taron pulls me back.
“She wants you to come now. Where are you going to?”
I shrug his hand off and try to find the scent again but it’s gone. Disappeared like it was never there. I must be more tired than I thought if I’m imagining that my mate came with one of the packs.
“Don’t ever pull me like that again.” I say to Taron and continue towards the office.
“Speaking of office, why doesn’t my alpha have her own office?” he asks and I ignore him.
I walk into the office and see Maeva sitting on Caius’s thigh and a pang of longing hits me. I want that. Being without a mate when it’s time for you to have one sucks. There are food and drinks on the table. Maeva waves a hand and points to a chair.
“Sit down and eat. The both of you have been moving nonstop since yesterday. You didn’t eat anything at all yesterday.”
So that’s why I’m extra tired. I thought it was just the lack of sleep, I didn’t remember that I haven’t eaten.
“While the both of you eat and rest, Taron and I will continue to check the pack and make sure everyone is settling nicely.”
“Thank you but I’ll eat fast and continue, you and your Beta won’t know the houses assigned.”
“It’s a good thing Luis will be with me and if I have any questions, I’ll mind link Caius.”
She starts to leave and Caius pulls her back and gives her a kiss. I look away when they forget they have an audience and get lost in the kiss. Why don’t I have that? I deserve to kiss someone that way. I thought I had it today but it was just my tired, hungry mind, playing tricks on me.
Maeva and her Beta finally leave and I start eating. “I didn’t even realize I was hungry.” I tell Caius.
“Me too. She just showed up, dragged me here and I saw that the food has already been served.” I nod and put food in my mouth so I don’t have to reply.
“You seem sad, is everything okay?” he asks and I nod.
“Maybe it’s my exhaustion that is translating as sadness. Maybe I need to rest.”
After eating, I sit in the office for a while, talking to Caius about the other plans we’re putting in place. I finally leave when my attention is needed at one of the pack borders. A new pack is coming in. I get there to find Taron already there, actually working. Now that I’ve eaten and sat down for longer than ten minutes, he’s not so annoying.
I join him in counting and sorting the new people and figuring out how to group them. We work very fast but meticulously. We don’t know when another pack might come in.
That scent comes again. I didn’t imagine it. She’s really here. I hand off the clip board I was holding to Taron.
“Hold this. Don’t come after me. I’ll be right back.”
I take off after the scent, scared that I will lose it if I don’t run fast enough. Soon, I see her running. She’s running away from me. Locks of red hair swing as she runs faster and faster. How is she this fast? Why is she running from me?
She runs into a familiar house and slams the door. I stand outside in confusion. I know the Alpha this house was assigned to. He doesn’t have a daughter and he came alone. I knock on the door but she doesn’t open. I go around the house and try the backdoor. It opens and I groan. I’ll have to teach her about making sure all the exists are locked if she’s running from someone.
She squats in the middle of the room, shaking with fear, her hair covering her face. Now that I’m close to her, I can smell something else. She’s an omega. How is an omega that fast and why is she in Alpha Magnus’s house? She didn’t come into the pack with them.
The front door breaks open and Alpha Magnus launches himself at me, punching me. I try to get away but he’s a strong alpha. I finally manage to get away and I put my hands up.
“I don’t mean any harm, Alpha. She’s my mate!”
His face is shocked and he looks back at the girl, who is still shaking on the floor. He clears his throat and his eyes harden.
“I’m sorry, Bata Clayton but she cannot be your mate.”
“She is my mate,” I growl in annoyance. “Who is she and why is she here?”
“She’s my daughter and I snuck her in with me.” he says. “No one outside my pack knows about her existence. She wasn’t supposed to leave this house.”
He turns and growls at her and I growl back at him.
“I’m sorry Clayton. She’s not fit to be anybody’s mate. She had a sickness as a child that affected her mind. I won’t let her out of my sight. Please leave or I will be forced to make you leave unconscious and ruin what your alpha is trying to do here.”
“You can’t be serious, Alpha Magnus. She’s mine.”
“Look at her! Do you think she can ever be yours?”
