Chapter 110 CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TEN

Chapter 110 CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TEN
CAIUS

I hate all this sitting around that’s all I’ve been doing. For the past few days, it seems like all I’ve been doing is take people into the pack. Right now, we’re doing it again. Bale called early in the morning to inform me that they were coming. Kol and his merry band of rogues attacked and the pack members who were strong enough ran away while some surrendered.

Bale and his people arrive and his eyes meet mine across the distance. I sense his sadness.

“Alpha Caius,” Bale says when he approaches me.

He looks mentally beaten and destroyed. Like he has failed. I clasped his forearm in greeting, feeling the tremor in his muscles.

“Get rid of that defeated spirit right now. I told you to run at the first sight of rogues. They outnumber you and will not stop until every wolf opposing them dies. It’s not weakness to run to fight another day.”

He nods but he still doesn’t accept it. “You’re a good wolf Bale, don’t let what you have no control over ruin that.”

We start moving towards the pack house so we can get started on settling the new arrivals. Our pack house has always been too big for the pack members but at this rate, people will start sleeping on top of each other.

We get to the pack house and sort everybody out. Clayton offers Bale his house. Something happened with Clayton that he doesn’t want to talk to me about. He’s different somehow. Sad, lost and very unhappy. I’ve asked about it but he doesn’t want to tell me and I don’t want to pry.

After the shadow pack has been settled, we enter another endless meeting. One more thing I hate about what is the going on. The meetings don’t end. These meeting never lead us anywhere but they insist on having frequent meetings.

After discussing what Kol, Ryland, and the rogues are doing, we start discussing security. I’m about to suggest we review patrol rotations when the first howl shatters the calm.

The sound rips through the building, sending shivers through everyone. We stand up and start running towards the sound when we hear another one. A wolf is in trouble.

“Rogues!” a voice screams from our left.

Adrenaline surges through me like lightning in my veins. I half shit, claws extending, senses sharpening until every heartbeat in the vicinity thunders in my ears. Maeva and Taron are already moving, shouting orders to their people. My wolves pour out of pack house and around.

We run into the clearing. Today is the day they find out that it’s not so easy to take my pack. I pause at the number of rogues I see when we get to the clearing. From the reports we’ve gotten, they’re usually the size of an army. The rogues snarling at us with blood in their eyes and two dead wolves in front of them aren’t an army.

“Continue fighting. I’ll be back.” I say to Maeva through the mind link.

This has to be a trap. There is no other way to explain it. I shift fully and take Clayton and my pack warriors and we start running to the other direction. We run very fast but we do not find any sign that there are more rogues.

“What are we doing here, Alpha? The fight is the other way.” Clayton says after he has shifted to human form.

I shift too, looking around in confusion. “I was so sure it was a trap. That’s the only explanation why there just a few rogues and Kol, Ryland, and Luca are nowhere to be found. Let’s go back and finish the fight.”

Hopefully, the fight isn’t over by the time we get back. I shift back and we start running back to the fight. When we get back, more than half of the rogues are dead and the fight is still happening.

“We have to capture at least one alive so the witches can test on him.” I tell Clayton through mind link.

We both shift and I point to one of the rogues closest to me. We surround him and bares his teeth, ready to take us down. He charges at me and I dodge then grab him by the neck. Clayton helps me hold down the struggling wolf.

Another rogue sees what we are about to do and charges at us. Maeva jumps on him and tears his throat out. The rogue I’m holding slowly loses consciousness before I let him go. Clayton carries the wolf away while I shift back to wolf form to join the attack.

Soon all the rogues are dead and we stand in a pool of dead rogues. Maeva shifts and stands in front of me.

“Where did you suddenly disappear to?” she asks.

“I don’t think this was the main attack. I didn’t see any of the leaders and I assumed this was to distract us while they enter the pack from another part. We didn’t find anything so we came back.”

“What if they’re scared of facing you and that is why they didn’t come.” She suggests.

I shake my head. “I don’t think that’s the reason. The wolves that attacked shadow pack were more than this. It’s no secret that we’re taking in other packs so it would make sense that they would send a larger pack of wolves to attack us.”

Understanding dawns and she nods. “You’re right. Something is fishy about this situation.”

“Three of ours injured, none dead.” Taron says when he joins us. “We beat them.”

“Don’t celebrate yet. This wasn’t the main attack. I don’t know what they’re waiting for but this isn’t over. They’ll be back with more rogues.” Maeva says.

“We’ll fight them again and win.”

The men start clearing out the dead rogues who came. One thing this attack has shown is where we are lacking. We’ll definitely have another meeting to discuss how we’re going to improve. A lot of wolves didn’t come out to fight. A lot of wolves aren’t training and for this to work, every wolf in this pack must be able to defend against one or two rogues.

“Did you notice something different with Clayton?” Maeva asks after Taron leaves.

“Yes but he doesn’t want to talk about it.”

“It won’t do to have him distracted. He needs to get over whatever it is bothering him, soon.”

“He’s fine. Leave him alone. He’ll talk when he’s ready.”

She looks like she wants to say more but she doesn’t.

“What a way to welcome ourselves into your pack.” Bale says, laughing.

“Don’t worry about it. Prepare for more.” I say and Maeva and I leave.

Later in the evening, everyone gathers to eat together and get to know each other. Clayton looks around those gathered and excuses himself. Something is seriously wrong. Usually he’d be talking to the new females, getting properly acquainted with them and making every one laugh. Maeva gives me a pointed look and I sigh and follow him.

“If you’ve come to ask what is bothering me, Caius, don’t. I won’t talk about it.”
