Chapter 36 a silver ray of hope
Amelia’s P.O.V.
“Why did you take this risk, Amelia? What if he stayed a bit more sober than you anticipated?” Marcus scolded me, sounding worried and angry at the same time.
I didn’t reply and continued removing my clothes. They were now stained with Bernard’s blood, and I hated his smell on me.
“Should I really need to be afraid of him now?” I asked Marcus coldly, throwing everything in a big trash bag.
I was in the bathroom, and he was on the other side of the door. He was so scared when he learned where I went earlier that he waited for me in my room, almost drilling a new path on the floor with his pacing until I came back.
“No, you don’t need to be afraid of him anymore, but you forgot that he is King Alexander’s nephew, and he is still suspicious about our involvement in that case. You don’t know but they are still searching for you.” He was agitated while talking.
I paused and my grip on my leather pants tightened when I heard the last sentence.
“I told him that you have not been in good health all these years, and if… if he has even a bit of sympathy for the victim, they should let her spend the rest of her time in peace.”
My jaw clenched and I almost dug my nails into the leather of the pants.
“And the next second, I got the news that Bernard had been beaten to death by a mysterious assassin. Alexander would have already guessed that it’s you.” he continued yelling, his frustration reaching its peak.
“Did you tell him that I am that victim?” I asked him calmly and set foot inside the shower cubicle.
“Of course not, pup.” He retorted immediately and I smiled.
“I am sure that you gave him enough evidence to prove that the victim is still recovering and on her deathbed. Even if Bernard screams at the top of his lungs that the victim is the one who beat him up, Alexander will not believe him.” I comforted him with plain logic.
“And how are you sure about this?” Marcus asked me immediately, sounding annoyed.
“Because the one who beat him up doesn’t exist in our group.” I reminded him of the cruellest fact about me.
I closed my eyes after starting the shower tap and let the water hit my head and wet my body.
The coldness of the water made me shiver a little, but this was nothing against the fire burning inside my heart.
I wanted to kill Bernard, but it would be an easy death for me. In the past two years, I started targeting his businesses secretly, making him bear financial losses from time to time.
In a fit of rage, he made bad decisions and did stupid things, making his people lose their faith in him.
I wanted him to lose everything before he takes his last breath.
“But Alexander is not a fool, Amelia. I have already enraged him today.” He continued grumbling in worry.
“Don’t worry too much, Marcus. If anything goes wrong, I will take the fall. I will not let anyone come after you or anyone else.” I assured him while cleaning myself.
“Do you think it should make me feel relaxed?” he asked sarcastically, but I could feel that he was getting angry once again.
I closed the tap and got out of the cubicle. I took a big towel from the shelf and wiped my body.
I didn’t answer him immediately because I knew that I would not be able to make him understand my point here without facing him.
“Amelia. Are you okay? Why are you not answering?” he asked me worriedly after some time.
“I am okay. I am coming out.” I replied to him calmly while putting on a thick robe. After fastening the belt, I opened the door and walked out of the bathroom.
“You always made me worried, kiddo.” He grumbled but breathed out in relief after seeing me.
“You always worried too much about me.” I teased him while going towards the closet.
“I asked the kitchen to send your dinner to your room. Just rest for tonight. Tomorrow will be a big day for us if King Alexander decides to come after us again.” He instructed me calmly while going towards the exit door.
“He will not after any of us.” I told him nonchalantly while taking out my night clothes, confident about what I said.
“And why are you so sure?” he asked annoyingly this time.
I smiled bitterly but moved my face in his direction. “Alexander has his own flaws, Marcus, but I felt that he has a deep hatred towards the abusers, and Bernard is, in this case, nothing but an abuser. So, even if he is Alexander’s nephew, I believe that Alexander will not come after us to avenge him.”
I was confident in what I was saying, and I knew that Marcus could feel that.
He didn't react but continued staring at me before taking a deep breath after a few seconds.
“Rest for now, kiddo. You had a long day.” He murmured in a bitter voice and walked out of the room.
I watched him exiting the room with a hunched back. He closed the door without looking in my direction.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a while, still standing straight at the same spot but suddenly I felt tired.
Because of Bernard’s action of posting that incident on the net, now the chances were slim that Alexander would approve our request of forming a pack.
Yet, deep down in my heart, I still had a silver ray of hope that Alexander would not let Bernard affect his judgement.
I opened my eyes and walked out of the closet after taking my clothes. I removed the robe and put on the clothes absentmindedly, thinking about other ways through which I could secure my people’s lives, but this wasn’t as easy as it looked like on the surface.
I glanced at my phone on the bed when it started ringing when I was about to put on a t-shirt.
