Chapter 37 he acted recklessly
Amelia’s P.O.V. (Continued)
I put on the t-shirt while walking towards the bed. My heart skipped a beat when I saw Alexander’s name on the screen.
Why was he calling me now? I looked at the table clock, and it was almost close to mid-night.
I was hesitant to take the call, but with everything that was going on, I sighed and took the call before lying down on the bed.
“Greetings, King Alexander.” I greeted him formally while closing my eyes.
“We are not in a meeting room, and no one is listening to us, Amelia.” He complained in a gruff voice.
I felt something off with his voice but decided not to pry into his personal matters.
“You didn’t call me today, not even a message.” He complained and I frowned.
I didn’t want to open my eyes, and I don’t see a need to open my eyes because I can’t see him.
I took a deep breath before replying to him.
“What is bothering you?” I asked him in a low voice, trying to mask my tiredness.
“So many things.” He replied and suddenly went silent.
I didn’t speak either. The silence was comfortable, but I felt as if I could hear his heartbeat.
That was once, but whenever I felt restless, I heard his heartbeat right over my ears.
It gave me a strange sense of calmness and security. It sometimes terrified me now.
“I never wanted to be a king. I never wanted to bear this burden of taking care of whole family, and rule the world. This is exhausting.” He mumbled in a very low voice after some time.
“You are right. This is exhausting.” I agreed with him without any hesitation.
I wasn’t the king, but I lead a group. I am willing to do everything for the well-being of everyone in my group.
It doesn’t matter if you lead a small group or the whole world. Every leader face almost same set of problems. Only the level differs from person to person and group to group.
“Do you know they said that I am still unmated because I have committed so many sins in both my past life and this life that the Moon Goddess refused to bless me with a mate. Can you believe it? I am the king. I have everything that a common man dreams about, but didn’t get what every werewolf gets from the goddess.”
I felt a tightness in my chest. I don’t know why his emotions always affected me, but right now….
An urge to go find him and comfort him surged in my heart.
“And what good did a mate bring to me? If you think this way, what did I do wrong, or what unforgivable sin did I commit in my past life that the goddess paired me with someone who destroyed me?” I asked him bitterly, pain, hatred, and agony filling my voice.
I sighed mentally and scolded myself for my outburst.
Clearly, I hated talking about my past, but his longing for a mate snapped something inside me.
"I guess we both are cursed for not having a loving mate as punishment for something that we did wrong in our past life." he mumbled, sounding tired and drunk.
“I am sorry for my outburst. I didn’t mean to.” I apologized in a tired tone.
He still didn’t speak, which made me a bit worried for him. Even if he is a king, he is still a human being with feelings and a mortal body, which can feel tiredness and exhaustion too.
“If you are feeling sleepy, we can end this call.” I suggested it to him gently after some time.
“I don’t want to be alone tonight. Can we not cut this call?” He requested, which sounded more like a plea.
“Alex.” I called him softly, worry evident in my voice.
He just hummed in response.
“Are you drinking?” I asked him when I realized that he wasn’t in the right state of mind.
“Yeah.” He admitted it without any hesitation and my heart skipped a beat.
Werewolves have a high tolerance for alcohol. If they want to get drunk, they add a small amount of wolfsbane to whatever they want to drink.
“How much wolfsbane did you use in your wine?” I asked him hurriedly, sitting up on the bed as alarm bells went off at the back of my mind.
“You caught me.” He mumbled, followed by a muffled giggle. I groaned in frustration but couldn’t help but worry about him.
“Tell me how much wolfsbane, Alex?” I asked him sternly this time.
“Nothing much, love. Just a bit more to make me feel drunk. I can’t lose senses that I know.” He comforted me, but this didn’t make me feel better.
“Yes, you can’t lose your senses because your enemies always have their eyes on you. One wrong move, and your existence will be wiped out without you knowing that. Whatever problem you are facing right now can be talked about, and with a friend like Beta Hunter, you can find the solution in no time.” I continued scolding him sternly while reminding him that he is not alone.
I heard a knock on the door, interrupting my outburst on Alexander.
I was really angry with him for being so reckless.
“Who has come?” he asked me alarmingly.
“A maid. I guess she brought my dinner.” I told him while getting off the bed.
“Dinner? This time?” I heard him exclaiming in confusion.
“Be quiet for a while.” I instructed him sternly, walking towards the door at the same time.
To my surprise, he really went quiet, making me smile helplessly. It's not like I can't talk to someone of the opposite gender. The thing is that everyone knows that I keep a distance from them because of my own psychological issues.
I adjusted my emotions before opening the door.
“Ms. Locke. Alpha Marcus asked me to bring your dinner to you.” Lily, the kitchen maid, said this to me cheerfully.
“Thanks for bringing me food, Lily, and I am sorry to bother you at this late hour.” I apologized sincerely because it was already past midnight. She should be sleeping soundly instead of reheating food and bringing it to me.
“It’s no problem, Ms. Locke. You are working so late without taking breaks for us. This is the least that I can do for you,” She replied with a beaming smile, leaving the food cart near the study desk.
“Go back to your room and get some good sleep, Lily. I will take care of this after finishing eating.” I instructed her while taking the food cart.
“Just leave it outside your room after finishing eating, Ms. Locke. I will take it away in the morning. You also need to rest well.” She replied in a concerned tone while going out of the room.
“Thanks, Lily.” I thanked her sincerely, to which she replied with a toothy grin before closing the door as she left the room.
