Chapter 52: I Explain to You

Chapter 52: I Explain to You

When Calliope saw me pull out my phone, her expression changed instantly.

She never expected I would have recorded everything.

When I saw Juno and Mary show up earlier, I had a bad feeling, so I quickly took out my phone and turned on the recording function. I didn't think it would actually come in handy.

"Helena, we're here as guests. Don't do this," Knox said anxiously, seeing things going south.

Don't?

I sneered. You want to suck up to these people, but what does that have to do with me?

Not only would I not listen, but I'd also cut off your escape route!

I looked at Knox with a hurt expression. "Knox, don't tell me even you don't believe me."

"I..."

Seeing Knox caught in a dilemma, I sneered inwardly.

If he said he believed me, he'd offend Calliope directly. If he didn't believe me, I'd have to show my evidence.

I wanted to see what he'd choose.

"Let her play it. I want to see how she can twist the truth," Juno said aggressively, rushing over.

I smiled. I waved my phone. "I was giving you an out, but it seems Juno doesn't need it."

"In that case, forget it."

I pressed play on the recording. The voices of Juno and Mary from the beginning came through clearly.

Hearing their voices, everyone's expressions changed instantly.

"Helena, stop! Turn it off!" Knox looked anxious.

I laughed coldly. "Why panic? This is just the beginning. Calliope's voice comes later—it's even better. Don't you want to hear it all?"

"Helena, enough. Stop playing it. Let's end this here."

Knox tried to grab my phone. Joseph, standing nearby, frowned. "How about this, Ms. Lockwood—I'll take you home and listen to your recording properly."

Joseph's words made me overjoyed.

I'd been worried about how to leave, and now he'd given me the perfect opportunity.

I nodded. "Sure."

Seeing Joseph about to leave, everyone panicked.

Calliope jumped out to stop him. "Mr. Davis, this is all a misunderstanding, really! Let me explain."

"No, no, no."

Joseph waved his hand. "It's not me you need to explain to—it's Ms. Lockwood here."

Joseph looked at me. "The question is whether Ms. Lockwood will accept Calliope's explanation."

I shook my head. "Rather than an explanation, I'd prefer to leave with you."

"Alright, let's go then."

Joseph gestured for me to go ahead, and I walked straight out.

Seeing us leave, Knox hurried after us. "Helena, I'll go with you."

I stopped and turned to look at him. "No need. Mr. Pemberton should stay and keep Juno company. After all, she had someone throw wine on me for your sake."

I finished and said to Joseph, "Let's go."

Joseph nodded. "Of course, Ms. Lockwood, after you."

In the car, Joseph asked about Knox. "That gentleman looks familiar. I think I've seen him somewhere. What's his relationship to you, Ms. Lockwood?"

I answered honestly. "He's my fiancé. Last time he secretly took my horse, but I caught him."

Hearing this, Joseph looked puzzled. "Your fiancé? Then you two...?"

I shook my head. "Our engagement is about to be called off, so whatever he does doesn't represent me."

Joseph nodded. "I see."

Meeting Joseph today was a pleasant surprise, and having him drive me home was a rare opportunity.

Thinking of this, I quickly invited him. "Mr. Davis, could I invite you to visit our home? My father admires you greatly."

"Sure, sure. Mr. Lockwood and I hit it off right away."

Soon, the car stopped at the villa entrance. Henry, having received word, led the household staff to greet us at the door.

After getting out, Joseph looked around and said to Henry, "Mr. Lockwood, your home's layout is excellent."

"I didn't know Mr. Davis understood design, too." Henry stepped forward and extended his hand.

After shaking hands, Joseph pointed around. "Mr. Lockwood, look at your villa—surrounded by mountains and water, a fresh environment, plus this villa design—very comfortable living."

Joseph's words made everyone laugh.

Henry gestured welcomingly. "Thank you for your kind words, Mr. Davis. Please, come in."

"Thank you."

Joseph stepped inside.

The servants had already arranged fruit and made coffee. Just as I sat down with Joseph, my phone rang. I looked—it was Knox calling. What a pain.

I excused myself and walked away before answering.

"What do you want?"

"Helena, are you home?"

I glanced at Henry and Joseph talking in the living room and lowered my voice. "I'm already home and in bed. If you have something to say, say it tomorrow."

"Don't hang up, Helena. I can't wait until tomorrow."

Knox's tone was urgent. "Helena, I barely know that Juno. I don't know what got into her today. I only brought you there to meet Joseph. If I'd known Juno would act crazy, I never would have taken you."

"Helena, I was really wrong. Can you forgive me?"

Hearing Knox's words, I was puzzled.

Last time, Henry had already transferred one billion dollars to the Pemberton Group. The loan agreement was done. The Pemberton Group shouldn't be this short on money.

But Knox's behavior didn't look like someone who wasn't desperate for money. I kept my guard up. "You're so eager to meet Joseph—is something wrong with the Pemberton Group?"

"No, no."

Knox denied it immediately. "I just want to get to know Joseph. Helena, can you help me out?"

"No!"

I cut off his hopes directly. "I told you I'm not close with Joseph."

Knox, on the other end, sounded frustrated. "But Helena, he offered to drive you home. How are you not close?"

"I took a cab home after I left. Believe it or not."

I lied outright.

With someone like this, shutting him down completely was better than letting him keep bothering me.
