Chapter 26: She Is a Professional, Isn't She?
"How can you talk like that? Aren't you a medical professional too? Don't you know not to judge a book by its cover? Just because you don't have the talent and ability doesn’t mean others don't!"
Floyd shot back, defending Emily.
He hadn’t really noticed Bianca’s appearance before, but now he saw a face that was kind yet cold, with sharp, narrow eyes. She seemed deeply calculating.
Bianca regretted losing her temper, especially since Floyd overheard her.
She quickly tried to explain, “Dr. Ryan, you misunderstood. That’s not what I meant. Emily is my sister, and I’ve never seen her study medicine. She said she only learned some basics from a country doctor, so I was surprised and confused!”
If there was any fault, it was Emily’s for keeping secrets.
She looked pitifully at Floyd.
Normally, this tactic worked well.
But Floyd, who had seen countless people and could read faces, saw right through her.
He looked stern, “As her sister, you don’t care about her and even doubt her? You don’t seem like sisters, more like enemies! That’s just your sister being humble, don’t you understand?”
After scolding Bianca, he turned to Emily with a loving smile, “Emily, what was the patient’s condition just now? Was it a difficult case?”
Emily shook her head, “The patient’s condition was a bit complicated. I dealt with the low blood sugar issue, but there are other minor problems that need medication.”
Her aunt’s injuries were caused by domestic violence, but she couldn’t reveal that now due to memories from her past life.
In her previous life, her aunt had hidden the abuse to avoid troubling her. By the time Emily had time to visit, her aunt had already passed away.
Even though she avenged her aunt in her past life, she hoped in this life to keep her aunt and her children safe, rather than holding her aunt’s ashes.
“I think you’re just not skilled enough, that’s why you’re saying this. Low blood sugar can be treated with some sugar water, and you took so long! The patient hasn’t moved at all. If you can’t treat her, you should wait for Dr. Ryan. It’s not right to take over.”
Lily, who wasn’t afraid of offending Floyd, spoke out.
Floyd, though old, had sharp, bright eyes. He was about to speak when…
“Emily…”
A pharmacy employee helped Emily’s aunt, Violette, out. She looked visibly better.
Some of the remaining onlookers saw her walking out fine and began to praise Emily’s medical skills.
“Violette!”
The first to speak wasn’t Emily. Bianca rushed over to take Violette’s hand, expressing concern, “Violette, why didn’t you come to our house when you arrived in Silverlight City? And you were unwell, and Emily knew, but you hid it from me. Is it because I’m weak that you kept it from me? Violette, you wouldn’t prefer Emily over me, would you?”
Bianca’s tone was playful, hinting to everyone that Emily’s accurate treatment was due to her familiarity with Violette’s condition.
Lily chimed in, “See, I knew it. How skilled could she be? They know each other. Dr. Ryan, don’t be fooled by her tricks. They could be putting on a show while you’re away!”
Floyd frowned.
Bianca’s eyes flashed with a smile.
She’d heard Floyd couldn’t tolerate deceit. Seeing him frown, she guessed he felt manipulated.
She wanted to see how Emily could win Floyd’s favor now.
"No, I didn't know I was going to faint. Emily didn't know I was coming here either. She's very good!" Violette defended Emily against Lily's mockery.
Violette’s anxious explanation only made things worse.
Emily patted Violette’s shoulder reassuringly, "Violette, it’s okay. Don’t mind what she says."
Then she turned a cold gaze to Lily, "I don’t need to prove my skills to you. You better shut up, or I might not be able to hold back from hitting you!"
"You..." Lily was scared into silence.
Bianca quickly stepped in front of Lily, "Emily, Lily was only considering everyone’s well-being. This is a pharmacy; professional doctors should treat patients. If you break the rules, who will come here in the future?"
"Who said Emily isn’t professional!" Floyd finally spoke up for Emily, "She works here. Treating patients is her job."
He winked at Emily.
Emily didn’t usually treat patients often. If he could get her to come here once a month, he might learn a lot by observing her.
Seeing Floyd’s intention, Emily smiled wryly, "Yes, I work here now."
This was her indirect agreement to Floyd’s request.
Floyd laughed heartily, "With your help, my job will be much easier."
Floyd’s admiration for Emily made Bianca jealous. She wanted to say something, but Floyd cut her off, "Why are you still here? If you’re not treating patients, leave. This pharmacy doesn’t welcome troublemakers. Go, go, go!"
He directly ordered them out.
Bianca felt extremely embarrassed but had to maintain a polite demeanor, "Dr. Ryan, I won’t disturb you anymore. If I have medical questions, may I consult you?"
Floyd waved her off, "Don’t you have a teacher? Why would you need me? Are you saying you’re better than your teacher?"
"No, no… I just thought, if my teacher is busy..." Bianca’s face turned ugly.
She needed her teacher’s guidance and couldn’t afford to offend him.
Floyd scoffed, "Are you saying I’m less busy than your teacher? I’m busier than him!"
Bianca was silenced again.
She dared not say another word, fearing more mistakes.
Finally, she turned to Violette, "Violette, you’re not well. Why don’t you come to the Johnson Villa to rest?"
"Violette, you can stay with me!" Emily didn’t want Violette to go to the Johnson Villa and be humiliated. She guessed Violette needed Eli’s help.
Violette patted Emily’s hand reassuringly, "I know about your situation. Don’t worry. I’ll go see your parents and ask for some justice for you."
She then looked at Bianca coldly, "Let’s go together!"
She had noticed Bianca’s subtle doubts about Emily.
She hadn’t seen Bianca in a long time and didn’t realize how much she had changed.
The problem likely stemmed from Eli and Cleo.
Emily’s eyes reddened.
Violette was thinking of her.
It was okay. Now that she had the ability, she could help Violette when needed.
Emily didn’t stop Violette from going to the Johnson Villa, watching Bianca lead her aunt away.
"Emily, you promised to come here for consultations!" Floyd quickly reminded her, afraid she’d change her mind.
Emily chuckled, "Don’t worry. I won’t go back on my word."
"Dr. Ryan, I need your help with this prescription!" A bold voice called from the door.
Emily saw the newcomer, "It's you?"
