Chapter 27: An Old-Fashioned Way of Flirting?
"You know me?"
Emily's sudden outburst made the newcomer look puzzled.
"No, I thought you were someone else!"
Emily quickly corrected herself.
Charles wasn't too surprised; he even had a barely noticeable smirk of mockery on his lips.
With his family background and looks, many women wanted to get to know him.
They all had their tricks!
Such a clichéd way of striking up a conversation barely warranted his attention.
Emily naturally saw the disdain in Charles's eyes.
She knew he misunderstood her but didn't bother to explain, awkwardly rubbing her nose.
She wasn't wearing her mask now, and her identity wasn't that of a doctor, so her earlier words indeed seemed abrupt.
Her gaze swept over the prescription Charles handed over, immediately meeting Charles's sharp eyes.
Who exactly was this woman?
Could she be related to the woman Daniel dealt with before, here to gather information?
"Dr. Ryan, please take a good look at this in private," Charles reminded cautiously, his eyes alert as he watched Emily.
Floyd, who was from Emerald City and had once examined Daniel, immediately recognized the prescription as Daniel's when Charles handed it to him.
He had heard that someone could treat Daniel and was curious about what the prescription entailed.
Floyd quickly took the prescription to examine it, not avoiding Emily, and didn't grasp Charles's intention.
"Brilliant, brilliant! Who wrote this prescription? It's quite beneficial for the patient's condition. If I'm not mistaken, does it also include some supplementary elements?"
Floyd's eyes lit up at the sight of a good prescription.
Only such pure-hearted doctors could reach a certain level of expertise.
Charles felt relieved hearing Floyd's words; it seemed the prescription could indeed treat Daniel.
"It does, but the person said acupuncture and some rare herbs are needed. I came today not only to ask for your help in verifying the prescription but also to see if you have those herbs."
Charles and his people always prepared backup plans.
Emily had mentioned she could help find the herbs, but he still sought additional help, just in case.
It seemed the required herbs were quite rare.
Floyd asked for the names of the herbs but wasn't sure if he had them.
"The herbs you mentioned, I'm still missing two. You must have asked around elsewhere; these two herbs are hard to find," Floyd said honestly.
He thought for a moment and handed the prescription to Emily.
He didn't even give Charles a chance to react.
"Emily, can you deduce the patient's condition from the prescription and see if the missing herbs can be substituted?"
Floyd was also thinking of Daniel's well-being.
Emily took the prescription casually.
Seeing the handwriting on it, she felt speechless.
It was her prescription, and Charles didn't trust her.
Emily looked at Charles with a half-smile, "If you don't trust it, don't treat him. He'll have at least three months left to live!"
For a moment, her eyes seemed to overlap with those of the masked doctor.
Even her words were so infuriating.
But that doctor was genuinely skilled.
The girl in front of him looked barely an adult, probably couldn't even understand the prescription, yet dared to speak so boldly.
Floyd, being old, had developed some partiality; how could he show the prescription to such a woman?
Moreover, he could tolerate insults directed at him, but not at Daniel!
Charles's face turned cold, and he snatched the prescription from Emily's hand, "You have no skills and dare to speak so boldly. This prescription was written by a very skilled doctor, not something you can understand. Dr. Ryan, this is inappropriate!"
Charles's last sentence was directed at Floyd, his displeasure evident on his face.
If not for the respect he still had for Floyd, his tone would have been much harsher.
Floyd felt somewhat embarrassed.
He had acted impulsively for Daniel's sake; the prescription indeed shouldn't have been...
"I'm sorry, I was out of line," Floyd admitted his mistake straightforwardly.
Charles didn't hold a grudge.
Since the prescription seemed fine, he bid farewell but asked Floyd to keep an eye out for the two missing herbs.
Of course, before leaving, he didn't forget to glare at Emily.
Back home, Charles couldn't help but vent to Daniel.
"You have no idea how rude that woman was, even cursing you. If it were the old me, I'd have taught her a lesson!"
Charles huffed angrily.
Now he had mellowed out, and this wasn't Emerald City.
He also hoped to accumulate some good karma for Daniel, wishing for his quick recovery.
Daniel raised his eyelids slightly, waiting for Charles's rant to end before speaking calmly, "So, you're arguing with a barely adult woman."
Mentioning the woman, Emily's face suddenly flashed in his mind.
"That girl knows Floyd?"
If Floyd handed her the prescription, her medical skills shouldn't be bad. Could it be a coincidence?
Charles slapped his forehead, "I was too angry to ask her name. Floyd called her Emily. But no worries, I suspect she's with the woman you dealt with last time, so I immediately had someone follow and investigate her!"
"Call them off!"
Daniel's voice suddenly rose, leaving no room for refusal.
"What?" Charles didn't quite understand.
Daniel rubbed his temples with some helplessness.
He already owed her once; he didn't expect to run into her again.
Daniel's eyes were deep and unfathomable, "Withdraw your people and don't provoke her again. Be polite if you see her in the future."
Charles finally understood.
He stared at Daniel's face suspiciously, even with a hint of amazement, "You know that woman? Who is she? It's the first time I've seen you care about a girl. Although she's a bit skinny, she's indeed beautiful. She'll be a stunner when she grows up."
As soon as he finished speaking, he met Daniel's indifferent gaze.
He felt a chill.
Charles was even more amazed.
What kind of skills did Emily have to make Daniel care so much?
He quickly made a gesture to zip his lips, "I won't mention it again!"
Only then did Daniel withdraw his gaze coldly.
He glanced at his watch and said in a deep voice, "It's time for you to leave."
Charles felt speechless.
It was the first time Daniel directly asked him to leave.
But facing Daniel's gaze, he had no choice but to comply.
Daniel didn't explain.
Emily had a dog at home now, and she probably hadn't hired a maid yet. At this time, she would likely be back soon.
After the argument with Charles, he didn't want them to meet again.
It wouldn't be good if he got dragged into it.
"Mr. Smith, here's the dog you asked for." At that moment, the butler came in with a young Border Collie.
The Border Collie was usually smart and obedient, but as soon as it reached Daniel, perhaps due to his strong presence, the dog started trembling at his feet.
The butler felt a bit awkward, "Maybe the dog isn't used to it yet. It'll get better as it grows!"
Daniel's expression remained indifferent.
"Alright," he said, showing no signs of liking the dog.
But then, he picked up a book on dog care and started reading.
The butler felt speechless.
Why was he feeling a bit scared? This recent poisoning seemed to have affected Daniel's mind.
