Chapter 94
"Really?" Evelyn smiled too. "Does Ms. Harris have ulterior motives? Do I really need to prove something like that?"
Evelyn's calm expression and indifferent attitude made it seem like she didn't care about anything at all.
But Celeste could see clearly.
Evelyn definitely wasn't as uncaring about Benjamin as the rumors suggested.
Didn't Evelyn like Matthew?
Now, Celeste wasn't so sure, but Evelyn would definitely not let go of Benjamin easily.
Celeste nodded with a smile. "True, some things only need suspicion to be condemned. So Ms. Thomas, why don't you have Mr. White kick me out?"
Celeste paused, a bit more amusement showing on her face.
"I believe one word from Ms. Thomas would be enough to make that happen."
"Because there's no need."
Evelyn seemed a bit tired. She sat down on the nearby sofa. "He's good to me, he gives me whatever I want - it's become a habit for him."
"But he's hardly felt how much I care about him. With Ms. Harris here, things are different."
"After all, if I occasionally get jealous because of you, not only won't he find it annoying, it'll actually make him happier."
Evelyn's casual manner carried a sense of confidence in her victory.
Celeste narrowed her eyes slightly, lowering her gaze.
"Ms. Thomas may not care that I'm here, but you should at least know why I'm here."
"To seduce Mr. White."
"That word..." Celeste frowned slightly. She clearly didn't like this description, but didn't dwell on it. "Rumor has it Ms. Thomas doesn't like Mr. White and has always wanted to break off the engagement, but Mr. White won't agree. And Mr. White's mother thinks well of me, so she hopes I can bring Mr. White back to Silverlight City."
To have her take Benjamin away from Emerald City, away from Evelyn.
Once Benjamin agreed, the connection between Benjamin and Evelyn would naturally be severed.
In her past life, Evelyn had thought the same way, until at the last moment of her life she saw Benjamin's panicked face and finally understood just how deep his love for her was.
At this moment, all of Evelyn's previous frustration and unhappiness vanished.
The smile on her face became even more calm, even somewhat casual, and her tone sounded quite light.
"I thought Ms. Harris could see clearly that you have no chance of taking him away. So, did you ask me to come here for something specific?"
"Ms. Thomas is right, which is why I want to know what Ms. Thomas is really thinking."
Celeste carried herself with good breeding, speaking at a measured pace with an appropriate smile on her face.
"Your engagement to Mr. White was arranged by your family's elders. As for your feelings..."
Celeste paused, seeming unsure how to continue. "Whether they're deep or shallow isn't for an outsider like me to judge."
"But after spending this time with Mr. White, I've come to feel he would make a very good husband. And the connection between the White family and the Harris family runs deep."
"Under these circumstances, being with him would only benefit me, no downsides. However..."
Celeste paused again, a helpless smile appearing on her face.
"I really don't want to do something like breaking up someone else's relationship."
"After all, I may not completely understand what kind of person Mr. White is after this time, but I have some idea."
"If I really did something, he definitely wouldn't let me off."
"So I hope that if Ms. Thomas has other plans, you'll separate from Mr. White sooner rather than later."
"That way, I can openly pursue Mr. White. After all, a man like Mr. White is hard to come by."
Her praise was sincere, making a vein throb at Evelyn's temple.
A smile appeared on Evelyn's face. "Since Ms. Harris has said all this, I'd be pretty stupid to let him go now, wouldn't I?"
Benjamin had done so much for her.
Even if there were obstacles between them, they absolutely couldn't separate because of her again.
That would be disrespectful to him and to their relationship.
Evelyn drove around outside alone all day.
Was she unhappy?
Not really. From what Celeste said, she could feel Benjamin's feelings for her were strong enough to make others back off.
Did she mind the White family's arrangements?
No.
She knew better than anyone how many things she'd done to hurt Benjamin before. She really had no right to mind what Benjamin's mother did.
If she had a child, she'd also want them to be safe, smooth, and happy, not suffering because of some woman.
So what was it then?
Her heart felt stuffy, with a feeling she couldn't quite name or explain.
It wasn't until evening, when the sky darkened, that she returned to the villa.
As soon as she entered, she saw Benjamin striding toward her.
"You came back so early..."
Before she could finish, he had already reached her and pulled her into his embrace.
His familiar scent spread through her senses. She felt very relaxed and couldn't help murmuring, "Benjamin."
"I'm here."
He carried her to the entryway cabinet and crouched down to change her shoes.
His movements were natural, not at all concerned that this action might damage his image.
Evelyn's feet couldn't help but curl slightly. Looking down at him, his voice spoke first.
"Where did you go?"
"This morning I went to the hospital to visit Celeste. I didn't go to the office, just wandered around outside."
When it came to her whereabouts, if he wanted to know, she had nothing to hide.
Rather than conceal things and cause unnecessary misunderstandings, she might as well tell the truth from the start.
"What did she say to you?" Benjamin stood up, lifted her down from the cabinet, and led her by the hand toward the dining room.
Evelyn's lips moved, then she suddenly smiled.
"Can't you guess? Anyway, just those very serious facts that give me a headache just thinking about them."
She reached out to hold his arm. "I wandered around outside all day. I'm so hungry."
This was true - her mood had been low, and she hadn't eaten anything at lunch.
He looked down at Evelyn in his arms, her face showing a charming innocence, and said nothing more, just took her to eat.
The meal was quiet, but the steaming soup added some warmth to the room.
It also eased Evelyn's tense nerves.
Indeed, the everyday warmth of life soothes ordinary hearts best.
While Evelyn was showering in the bathroom, Benjamin took his phone to the balcony and called his mother.
"How do you have time to call me?"
Serenity Powell's cheerful voice came through the phone.
Born into a criminal background, she'd always been straightforward in her actions, never dragging things out.
Only when it came to matters involving Benjamin had she gradually learned to compromise.
"Have Celeste go back."
He stated his purpose in one sentence, with no intention of small talk.
Serenity, who was lying on the sofa applying a face mask, frowned.
All her life, Serenity had only ever given orders to others.
After Benjamin was born, not only did he not consider her wishes, but listened to his tone - who knew who the elder really was!
"Isn't that something you could handle with one word? Why make me say it?"
The White family and the Harris family were too deeply entangled. Even when Benjamin did things, he had to consider multiple angles.
Serenity was different.
When she'd initially contacted Celeste, it was naturally based on the private friendship between the two families.
"I heard about what happened yesterday."
"You stood up for Evelyn and offended the Martinez family, but let Celeste get hurt."
"Now, Celeste is still in the hospital, and you want to send her away?"
