Chapter 93

Chapter 93

"Such an obvious attempt at sowing discord—Ms. Thomas must have seen right through it."

Benjamin merged into traffic, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Are you trying to teach them a lesson?"

"You don't need to handle this yourself. Let me take care of it."

Benjamin was clearly trying to save face for her. As if she wanted to teach them a lesson!

It was just...

She pressed her red lips together and turned to look at Benjamin, who was trying so hard to comfort her. Instantly, she felt like a deflated balloon.

From beginning to end, he had always been by her side, putting her feelings first.

And what about her?

She had hurt him so many times before without even knowing it, and even now, she was throwing a tantrum over these baseless rumors.

No matter how she looked at it, she was being childish.

After a few seconds of silence, Evelyn fidgeted with her seatbelt, her voice calming down.

"Benjamin, is it exhausting being with me?"

"What?" His brow furrowed slightly, as if he didn't understand what she meant.

She didn't mind and continued on her own.

"I have a terrible temper and don't know how to be considerate of others."

"No matter how much you do for me, when I lose my temper, I take it out on you."

She felt more and more embarrassed as she spoke.

The future heir of the White family—why should he put up with this from her?

It was only because he cared about her, wasn't it?

The one who is loved really does have all the power.

Benjamin controlled the steering wheel with one hand and held her hand with his right, giving it a gentle squeeze.

"I came today only because Celeste is from the Harris family, and I couldn't just stand by and let something happen to her."

"Don't take their words to heart."

Evelyn eventually went back to the villa with Benjamin. She clung to him, trembling as she watched the second half of the movie.

"Scared like this, yet you insist on watching." He looked at Evelyn curled up in his arms, somewhat amused.

Though he didn't mind watching a few more horror movies with her.

Having a beauty throw herself into his arms—why not?

She nestled in his embrace, speaking softly.

"Do you think ghosts really exist in this world? Could there be one hiding somewhere right now, secretly watching us?"

As she spoke, she burrowed deeper into his arms, wishing she could just merge into his body.

He gently stroked her head. "Why are you scaring yourself like this? Besides, if ghosts really existed, wouldn't every family have a few relatives who became ghosts?"

"What?"

She looked up at him in confusion, not understanding what he meant.

"Your relatives who became ghosts—how could they bear to let such an adorable Evelyn be bullied?"

"So they must be standing guard outside, not letting any ghosts or monsters near you."

That... actually made sense.

But didn't what he said basically confirm that ghosts exist?

As a result, Evelyn stuck to Benjamin all night. She was like his shadow, refusing to be more than three meters away from him.

Until it was time to shower...

She really couldn't bring herself to follow him into the bathroom.

Even so, she still chatted with him from outside the bathroom, separated by just a door.

That night, he deeply understood what it meant to have a sweet burden.

But as night fell and all was quiet, just as Evelyn was about to drift into sweet dreams, she couldn't help thinking—

If the White family really disapproved of this arranged marriage, wouldn't it be much easier for them to break off the engagement than for her?

And what benefits could Celeste bring to the White family?

But it was just a fleeting thought. She nestled in Benjamin's arms and soon fell asleep.

Yesterday seemed uneventful, but everything had drained quite a bit of Evelyn's energy.

So when she woke up the next day, it was already late. She reached out to touch the space beside her—the cool sensation showed that Benjamin had left long ago.

She hugged the blanket, feeling the warm sunlight streaming in, and the fear from last night completely dissipated at this moment.

She wanted to stay in bed but was disturbed by her phone on the nightstand.

Evelyn didn't even open her eyes. She picked it up and swiped to answer.

"Ms. Thomas, sorry to disturb you."

The pleasant and gentle voice made Evelyn's relaxed and happy mood vanish in an instant.

The woman calling her was Celeste.

Evelyn's eyes flew open, staring at the ceiling, her gaze cold.

But her voice carried the lazy tone of just waking up. "Ms. Harris, is there something you need, calling me at this hour?"

"I'd like to meet with Ms. Thomas. Do you have time?"

Was there any need for her to meet with Celeste?

Thinking about how Celeste was sent by the Harris family to seduce Benjamin, and how some people in the White family favored Celeste, her mood soured.

Much less interest in meeting.

Her brow furrowed slightly, displeasure creeping into her voice. "I don't think Ms. Harris and I have anything to talk about."

"Ms. Thomas doesn't need to be so hostile toward me. I have no ill will toward you. It's just that some things need to be said in person. It would benefit both of us."

Celeste's attitude sounded sincere, but you can know someone's face but not their heart, and they had barely met a few times anyway.

However, since Celeste had already called, refusing directly would make it seem like she was afraid.

Evelyn laughed lightly. "Fine, send me the address."

After hanging up, she got up to wash up.

By the time she came out of the bathroom, Celeste had already sent the address—it was a hospital.

Thinking of Celeste's confused state yesterday, it made sense.

Evelyn went into her walk-in closet and chose a floral dress.

A fresh, simple feeling that wouldn't steal the spotlight.

She applied light, natural makeup, put on a khaki coat, and left the villa with her bag and car keys.

On the way, she even bought a bouquet, looking every bit like someone visiting a patient.

Seeing what she was carrying, Celeste smiled and expressed her thanks. "Thank you for making a special trip to see me, Ms. Thomas."

"It's only right. You're Benjamin's subordinate. Coming to check on you on his behalf is appropriate."

Evelyn walked in and placed what she was carrying on the table.

Evelyn's attitude was indifferent, but her words asserted ownership.

"How are you feeling, Ms. Harris?"

Actually, Celeste looked perfectly fine now. Wearing a loose hospital gown, she showed no signs of illness, and her whole demeanor was quite good.

"I'm fine, thank you for your concern, Ms. Thomas."

"Just say what you want to say. What did you want to see me about?"

They had only met twice and had an unpleasant encounter—there really wasn't much to chat about.

Celeste studied Evelyn for a while, then sighed softly. "Ms. Thomas seems to have been hostile toward me from the first time we met."

The battle between women—men might not be noticed, but they themselves are crystal clear about it.

Evelyn pulled at her lips. "I don't like women who covet my fiancé. Is there a problem with that?"

Her expression was calm, showing no emotion.

"It seems my intuition was right. Ms. Harris came to Emerald City not simply for work, but to seduce my fiancé."

Celeste smiled, seeming helpless. "Is that what Ms. Thomas thinks? Since coming to Emerald City, I've been working diligently and haven't done anything else."
