Chapter 25
Benjamin walked to the hospital room door and saw Evelyn sitting on the bed, tears welling up in her eyes, about to fall.
The sadness in her eyes was completely unhidden.
Was she hurt by Matthew's favoritism?
Standing at the door, Benjamin pressed his thin lips together tightly, his eyes unconsciously turning cold and dark.
Sophia was the first to notice him. She immediately teared up and came forward: "Benjamin, please talk some sense into Evelyn. She keeps threatening to hurt people every time she speaks. I only came here because I was worried about her."
"Really? I thought you came for the principal dancer position." Benjamin directly exposed her true intentions.
Sophia's heart jumped, a flash of resentment crossing her eyes.
But quickly, she resumed her usual weak and helpless appearance, even forcing a bitter smile.
"I know you only have eyes for Evelyn. Naturally, I don't dare hope for anything, but you can't wrongly accuse me, can you?"
She bit her lip hard, as if she'd been holding back her grievances but couldn't suppress that surge of sadness and anger.
"When I heard Evelyn had a car accident, I just wanted to come see her."
"But when she saw me, she cursed me with all kinds of nasty words..."
She paused, sobbing slightly: "I know Evelyn likes Matthew, but she can't treat me as her imaginary enemy just because Matthew said something fair."
Matthew let out a soft sigh. He didn't say anything, yet it seemed like he said everything.
Evelyn's fingers gripped the blanket tightly, speaking through almost gritted teeth: "I wish you two cheaters stay together forever!"
Not only did Sophia not refute Evelyn, but her expression became even more sorrowful.
"How did you become like this? Evelyn, just because of Matthew, you want to completely cut ties with me? But when it comes to feelings, no one can force them. Benjamin loves you, but he's never made things difficult because of it."
These words sounded like Sophia was scolding Evelyn and defending Benjamin.
In essence, though, Sophia was cutting a wound into his heart.
Benjamin had done so much, yet Evelyn never had him in her heart—everything was just an act.
"So what if I am making things difficult for you? What can you do about it?"
Evelyn seemed to be at the peak of her anger. She grabbed the water glass from the bedside table and threw it hard at Sophia.
The glass hit Sophia's shoulder, and glass shards scattered all over the floor as Sophia screamed.
Her clothes got soaked, and she hopped around trying to throw herself into Benjamin's arms for protection, but he sidestepped to block her.
"Get out!" Evelyn shouted again, looking at him with red eyes, "Make them get out!"
Benjamin's cold eyes looked toward Matthew and Sophia. He didn't say anything, but the dismissal in his eyes was extremely obvious.
A few seconds later, seeing that Matthew and Sophia still hadn't moved, he frowned slightly: "Want to be thrown out?"
Even though Matthew and Evelyn had already had an ugly falling out publicly, if Matthew was actually kicked out of her hospital room, that would be another matter entirely.
He said through clenched teeth, "Evelyn, calm down and think carefully about what you should do. No one can keep indulging you and forgiving you forever."
Matthew's threat was subtle, but to Benjamin's ears, it sounded quite provocative.
He narrowed his eyes, coolly glancing over: "Just having broken legs doesn't seem to have affected your ability to move around."
Matthew's face immediately turned pale.
His legs were already broken—if he got hurt again... Not daring to say another word, he turned his wheelchair and left.
Sophia, disheveled as she was, had no choice but to reluctantly follow him out, despite her unwillingness.
As the hospital room door opened and closed, the room became quiet. Only the broken glass on the floor proved how intense the scene had just been.
While Evelyn's mind was filled with thoughts of "causing the death of loved ones," she also thought of Matthew's words—
[No one can keep indulging you and forgiving you forever.]
She kept making scenes—even someone as powerful as Benjamin would get tired, right?
Not only that, but her leg...
Evelyn thought of what Sophia had said initially, and her expression changed again.
When the doctor called Benjamin over just now, was it about her leg?
Was he delaying telling her because he didn't know how to bring it up?
Could it be that her leg really had no hope of treatment?
But when she got out of bed earlier, although it was uncomfortable, she didn't feel there was a major problem.
How could it have reached the point where she couldn't dance anymore?
Her heart felt cold. Evelyn lowered her head, lost in her own sorrow, completely unaware that Benjamin's gaze on her was becoming increasingly complicated.
"When the doctor called you just now, was it about my condition?" She decided to probe indirectly.
"Yes."
Benjamin's unusually brief response proved he was really upset, didn't it?
Benjamin was good to her—not just superficially, but truly cherishing her.
If her leg was really injured and she could no longer dance, he would probably be even more upset than she.
Evelyn wanted to comfort him, but didn't know where to start. After thinking for a while, she slowly asked, "Actually, things aren't that bad. Life is so long, we're bound to lose something, right?"
Was it him losing her, or her losing Matthew?
Benjamin clenched his jaw, his eyes fixed on Evelyn without looking away.
Not getting a response from Benjamin, she didn't mind and continued talking to herself.
"Dancing isn't essential anyway. I've gotten injured so many times because of dancing since I was young—I'm tired too."
So she was still going to please Matthew and give the principal dancer position to Sophia?
"I'll take this time to rest properly."
Sure enough, Evelyn had been acting from the start.
The corners of his lips twitched, forming an extremely stiff smile: "So where are you planning to rest?"
"You decide. Whatever place you think is suitable..."
She paused, then seemed to suddenly think of something, muttering to herself: "You're usually so busy with work, you probably don't have time for a vacation. That's okay too, I can take care of myself."
Was it that he didn't have time, or that she wanted to accompany Matthew during his recovery?
As his expression tightened, Evelyn suddenly looked up: "Oh, right, have you contacted an orthopedic doctor? Maybe I should just go there directly, so the doctor doesn't have to run back and forth."
"Are you informing me?" Benjamin could barely contain the emotions surging in his heart.
She was the one who wanted to break Matthew's legs, and now she wanted him to arrange a doctor to treat Matthew's legs?
So from beginning to end, he was just a tool in her eyes?
Meeting Benjamin's eyes with their surging undercurrents, Evelyn sensed the anger in his heart and the pain deep in his eyes that he could barely suppress.
Perhaps because he appeared so distressed, she didn't have time to feel sad about her own leg and only wanted him to calm down.
"Actually..." Before she could figure out how to comfort him, she suddenly thought of something, "Did your family contact you?"
Wealthy families, especially the White family standing at the top of the pyramid—how could they possibly accept a disabled daughter-in-law?
Her expression darkened. She swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue several times before finally saying: "Does your family want to break off our engagement?"
