Chapter 24
Chase walked into the hospital room and saw Benjamin and Evelyn embracing each other. The expression on his face...
"I didn't see anything!"
He didn't even have time to turn around before backing away, his head lowered, looking like someone who had seen everything but didn't dare show it.
"Come back."
Benjamin covered Evelyn with the blanket and looked back at him. "What did you find out?"
Chase walked in, keeping his head down, not daring to look at them.
"Mr. White, that driver was indeed drunk driving, but there's a major suspicious point."
"Three months ago, he was diagnosed with liver cancer and quit drinking."
For someone dying, wanting to extend their life this way was normal.
But suddenly drinking heavily again and driving drunk was very questionable.
Benjamin looked on coldly, signaling him to continue.
"He said he lost hope of living and gave up on himself. And after drinking, he remembered his family's financial difficulties, so he decided to haul cargo."
"I suspect someone paid him off to deliberately cause the accident."
For someone about to die, leaving money for their family this way wasn't hard to understand.
"Who do you suspect?" Evelyn suddenly spoke up, making Chase pause.
He didn't answer right away, but looked at Benjamin instead.
Even though he knew about Benjamin and Evelyn's relationship, some things still required Benjamin's approval before he could speak.
Only after seeing Benjamin nod slightly did Chase continue: "We're not sure yet. I've arranged for people to monitor his account. But this matter is most likely connected to Matthew."
They just didn't have solid evidence yet.
But Chase really looked down on Matthew's actions, and since he felt Benjamin was better than Matthew in every way, he naturally spared no effort to highlight Benjamin's good points.
However, the emotional reaction from Evelyn that he expected didn't appear.
She reached out and grabbed Benjamin's arm. "He's been going after me on the surface, but he's actually targeting my grandfather. I'm worried he'll make a move against my grandfather!"
"Ms. Thomas, don't worry. Besides the caregiver, Mr. White has also arranged bodyguards to watch over Preston." Chase eagerly took credit for Benjamin.
Evelyn's eyes flickered.
From beginning to end, Benjamin had been shielding her from harm. How could she turn a blind eye to it?
She used to think that he, standing at the peak of power, had his eyes on the small Thomas Group.
She really couldn't tell right from wrong.
There was a knock at the door, and a nurse pushed it open. "Which one is Evelyn's family member? The doctor has some instructions."
"Coming right away."
Benjamin responded, reaching out to ruffle Evelyn's hair. "You're hungry, right? What do you want to eat? I'll have Chase buy it."
"Okay." She answered obediently, uncertain in her heart whether he was still angry.
"Ms. Thomas, how could Mr. White be angry with you? Just hug him and act cute, and Mr. White would even pluck the moon from the sky for you."
When Chase's voice rang out, she realized she had asked her internal question out loud.
Fortunately, Benjamin had already left the room, but her cheeks still couldn't help feeling a bit hot.
"How could it be that simple?"
"Don't worry, it's actually even simpler." He said half-jokingly, "Even if it's fake, as long as you're willing to act, Mr. White will take it as real."
Evelyn's heart ached. She wanted some quiet time, so she casually mentioned a few foods for Chase to buy.
Before Chase left, she added, "What does he usually like to eat? Get some things according to his preferences, too."
"Mr. White isn't particular about food, as long as it fills his stomach. But knowing you specially arranged it, he'll definitely be very happy."
Really?
The room became quiet. Evelyn looked down at her pale, delicate feet, thinking about his behavior just now.
His tenderness toward her was definitely not an act.
"What, finding out you can never dance again, feeling sad?"
A voice that wasn't exactly sharp but clearly carried provocation rang out, making Evelyn's brow furrow.
Sophia swayed her hips as she walked in, not hiding her gloating expression at all.
Sophia was in a good mood and didn't mind Evelyn's silence.
"God really is fair. You stole my principal dancer position, and then you had a car accident and injured your leg..."
She looked maliciously at Evelyn's leg, her expression particularly vicious. "From now on, you'll walk with a limp. Let's see how you compete with me!"
A cripple?
Evelyn's brow furrowed slightly.
Just now, she had been rushing after Benjamin and hadn't paid attention to the discomfort in her leg, but it really wasn't that serious.
How did it become so severe in Sophia's mouth?
"What does this prove? It proves you can't even beat a cripple. Sophia, if I were you, I would have killed myself long ago."
"You..."
Sophia clearly hadn't expected Evelyn to remain so calm after hearing such news.
Anger rose on her face, but she forcibly suppressed it, and finally even laughed.
"Did Benjamin say something? He does have power and influence, and he can find you the best doctors. But your leg is ruined, and there's nothing he can do about it."
"Right now, all you can do is talk tough."
"I forgive you. Anyway, the principal dancer position at the White Group, you can only watch me take it."
As Sophia spoke, her eyes flickered, as if she had already obtained everything she wanted.
Her gaze on Evelyn became even more contemptuous, and her words more vicious.
"If you crawl over now and apologize to me, I might say a few good words about you in front of Matthew."
"Otherwise, he'll truly abandon you completely."
"And Benjamin, you don't think someone as proud as him would marry a cripple, do you? That's absolutely impossible!"
"You'll end up with nothing!"
Sophia's vicious appearance at this moment overlapped with Sophia from her past life in Zephyria's red-light district, stinging Evelyn's eyes while also making the hatred in her heart burst forth.
"I really gave the Brown family too many chances. Sophia, just wait for the Brown Group to be besieged by the industry."
This generation of the Brown family had no one skilled in business. They had long pushed the Brown Group to the edge of bankruptcy.
If Evelyn hadn't persuaded Timothy to help the Brown Group, where would the Brown family have a place in Emerald City now?
Who would have thought Sophia wouldn't be grateful and would even bite the hand that fed her?
Her gloomy expression made Sophia pause, obvious panic flashing in her eyes, as if she didn't know what to do.
The next second, the hospital room door was pushed open again. It was Matthew in his wheelchair.
He sensed the strange atmosphere between them and frowned slightly.
"Evelyn, I know you have many misunderstandings about us now. But Sophia rushed over when she heard about your car accident. How can you treat her this way?"
"What way?"
Evelyn laughed coldly, her cool gaze sweeping across Matthew's face. "Not having someone throw you out directly is my mistake."
"You really don't know gratitude!" Matthew's originally pale face flushed slightly red with anger.
His hands gripped the wheelchair armrests tightly, his words cutting: "Someone like you is destined to harm your loved ones!"
"Harm your loved ones" made Evelyn think of her family's tragic deaths in her past life. Her eyes instantly reddened, tears seeming ready to fall at any moment.
