Chapter 26

Chapter 26

She finally asked.

Benjamin felt his heart had gone numb, that he wouldn't feel anything special anymore.

But the emotions surging like a tide made even his breathing unstable.

He closed his eyes for a moment before pushing down his feelings: "Do you want to leave me that badly?"

Ever since Sophia and Matthew had schemed against Evelyn together last time, Evelyn had been acting affectionate toward him, and she even seemed to want to develop real feelings with him.

Even when small conflicts arose between them, she would try hard to explain, looking afraid that he might misunderstand.

But in the end...

It was all just his dream.

He looked deeply at her sitting by the hospital bed, then turned to walk out.

As he reached the door, he couldn't help but say: "Don't worry, I'll find the best orthopedic doctor."

Since she couldn't bear to see Matthew become disabled, he naturally couldn't let her down.

After the door closed, Evelyn realized he had just left like that.

She opened her mouth wanting to say something, but nothing came out.

She couldn't let him bear the bad reputation of defying his elders just because he loved her. Besides, someone as brilliant as him—how could his wife be disabled?

Evelyn sighed, feeling sour and bitter inside.

Was she sad?

A little, but not as intensely as when she learned about Sophia and Matthew's betrayal in her past life.

After all, she wanted to be with him to make up for past mistakes, not because she was truly devoted to him.

This way... she wasn't really a terrible person, was she?

She wasn't tying him to her side because of his feelings for her—that was better for both of them.

"Ms. Thomas," the hospital room door suddenly opened. The doctor paused for a second, seeing the mess on the floor, then spoke slowly: "You don't have any problems. You can go through the discharge procedures."

"Discharge?"

Her eyes widened, disbelief almost spilling out: "Didn't I injure my leg and won't be able to dance anymore?"

"Who said that?"

The doctor seemed somewhat angry that his professional ability was being questioned.

But the next second, perhaps thinking of her status, he tried to suppress his emotions: "Because the airbag deployed very quickly, aside from soft tissue bruising, your body has no major injuries."

Finally, he mutters,  "Luxury cars are luxury cars—even the safety features are the best. Sure enough, you should buy expensive cars."

Evelyn didn't notice the doctor's thoughts at all. Her mind was full of the fact that her leg was fine—so why had Benjamin looked so grim just now?

Connecting this to their recent conversation and Matthew's broken leg, she almost wanted to slap herself.

How many times had she been fooled? Why would she still believe Sophia's words?

She was truly hopeless!

"Oh no, Benjamin is really angry this time!"

She threw off the blanket, wanting to get out of bed, startling Chase, who had just entered: "Ms. Thomas, you can't get out of bed barefoot!"

If Evelyn got her foot cut by glass shards again, he really couldn't continue working at the White Group.

No, being fired would be the good outcome—he'd probably be sent to some terrible place!

He shook his head, absolutely not allowing himself to fall into such a situation. He strode into the room and placed what he was carrying on the bed.

"These are the clothes and shoes I prepared. After you change, I'll take you home."

"Where's Benjamin?" she asked urgently, just wanting to find him immediately.

Chase's features twisted slightly.

Honestly, he really didn't want to see Benjamin right now.

Benjamin was like a walking freezer, so cold it chilled people's hearts. Too scary.

"Something suddenly came up at the White Group. Mr. White went to handle it."

"Do you think I'm stupid?" She looked at him meaningfully.

He'd been with her this long, and suddenly the White Group had an issue?

At this exact moment?

Chase: "..."

"Go out first. We'll leave after I change."

He immediately walked out of the room.

Benjamin was too fierce, and Benjamin's fiancée, Evelyn, was sometimes smart and sometimes dumb—his future would be difficult.

Working people really have it rough.

As he was feeling sorry for himself, Chase's phone rang. Seeing it was Benjamin calling, he answered immediately.

"Mr. White."

"How is she?"

Benjamin's low voice came through the phone, revealing little emotion.

But having been by Benjamin's side so long, how could Chase not know he was in a bad mood?

Thinking of how urgently Evelyn wanted to see Benjamin just now, he really didn't know what they were fighting about.

He walked to a corner and lowered his voice: "Ms. Thomas is eager to see you, very eager."

After a pause, he added: "It doesn't seem fake."

Benjamin, sitting in his car at that moment, looked outside, self-mockery rolling in the depths of his eyes.

She was eager to see him—to ask about the orthopedic doctor?

He closed his eyes, his voice becoming even more hoarse: "Tell her I'll arrange for the best orthopedic doctor to come to Emerald City to treat... Matthew's leg."

His last sentence was almost a rasp. Even without seeing him speak, one could imagine his pain.

"Mr. White!" Chase was startled. "That was personally arranged by Ms. Thomas..."

He stopped there.

Benjamin hated Matthew—that was obvious.

Now Benjamin wanted to treat him—what else could it be for?

"Do as I say."

Hearing the dial tone, Chase frowned deeply. Benjamin had been wronged!

"Let's go."

Evelyn's voice came from behind. But Chase didn't have his usual enthusiasm; even his politeness toward her had faded.

He glanced at her and walked toward the elevator, clearly not wanting to deal with her.

What was going on?

She thought about Chase earlier, worrying about her stepping on glass, and couldn't connect it to his current cold, dismissive back.

But thinking about Benjamin's cold face, maybe he had given Chase a hard time, so Chase was giving her attitude?

She didn't take it to heart. After entering the elevator, she cut straight to the point: "Where is he?"

"What does Ms. Thomas need Mr. White for?"

Chase's voice sounded quite cold, completely lacking his usual warmth: "To ask about the doctor?"

He gave a cold laugh, his expression very disdainful.

"You ordered Matthew's leg to be broken, Mr. White did it for you, and now you're blaming him for being too harsh?"

"And you want him to find a famous doctor to treat Matthew's leg injury?"

"If that's the case, why did you order his leg broken in the first place?"

At this point, he smiled even more mockingly.

"I get it now—you wanted to intimidate Matthew, make him feel he can only depend on you?"

"Only someone as blind as you could fancy that trash."

The usually spoiled and willful Evelyn didn't throw a fit like before, but instead looked receptive.

"You're right, it's all my fault. I was blind."

"So I absolutely won't look back at Matthew, and I won't let Benjamin help treat his leg."

"It would be better if he could never stand up again."

"No, wait—it would be even better if he's just lame!"

The arrogant Matthew, if his leg was completely ruined, would only sink into darkness and self-destruction.

But if he were just lame, he'd still have to appear in public—that would be truly cruel for him.
