Chapter 8 Chapter 8 ///
Dawn
Dawn brought an unexpected calm to Rael. He woke early, still feeling the lingering aftershocks of the previous night. The experience with Lysandra at the bar was etched in his mind, but not for the reason he expected. There was something about Selene that made him uneasy, a feeling he couldn’t decipher. Although his wolf instincts warned him of the dangers of getting involved with vampires, especially the Dark Blood clan, his curiosity about this unusual vampire grew with each passing day.
Selene, for her part, woke up distraught. Lysandra’s kiss on Rael had stirred her in an unexpected way. She tried to ignore the discomfort and envy that washed over her, but in vain. Her thoughts were fixed on Rael and what he represented — a threat, an attraction, a puzzle to be solved.
That morning, the town of Ravenshade seemed quieter than usual. The tension between vampires and wolves hung in the air like an invisible fog. Gabriel, still recovering from Rael’s injuries, remained in seclusion, devising a plan to better understand this mysterious wolf.
The Library
Meanwhile, Rael decided to explore the town further. There was something about Ravenshade that held his attention, beyond the curious gazes of the vampires and the desire for freedom. He headed to the local library, an ancient and nearly forgotten building. Among the dusty shelves and old books, he hoped to find some trace of the town’s history and, perhaps, answers to his own questions.
Selene, at the same time, decided she needed to set the record straight. Rael couldn’t continue to play with the clan’s established boundaries. She sought out Gabriel, who met her with a hard look.
— He’s dangerous, Selene — Gabriel began bluntly. — And I’m not just saying that because he’s a wolf. There’s something about him we can’t quite understand.
— I know — Selene replied firmly. — But we need to know what he wants, what he’s looking for. If he’s really a threat or just someone lost.
Gabriel sighed in frustration.
— Be careful. The last thing we need is a war between clans.
Selene nodded and left, her mind made up. She needed to speak to Rael, understand his intentions, and perhaps learn more about him. After all, there was something about him that deeply intrigued her.
Meanwhile, Rael leafed through old books until he came across a local legend about an ancient alliance between wolves and vampires, broken centuries ago. This piqued his curiosity, but before he could delve deeper, he sensed Selene’s familiar presence.
He closed the book slowly, staring at the library entrance. Selene appeared, serious and determined.
— We need to talk — she said, her voice carrying both authority and apprehension.
Rael arched his eyebrow, smirking.
— Looks like I’m in trouble.
— You have no idea.
The library, with its sacred silence, was the perfect place for this meeting. Selene approached, crossing her arms.
— You know you’re being watched, right? My family won’t just let you go without discovering your intentions.
Rael smiled provocatively.
— And you were sent to intimidate me? Or just to find out more about me?
Selene didn’t look away.
— I came to warn you. If you continue to provoke my clan, the consequences will be serious.
Rael took a step forward, closing the distance.
— What if I’m not teasing? What if I’m just... living my life?
— Then prove it — Selene challenged. — Prove you’re not a threat.
Rael chuckled softly.
— Interesting. But I know you, Selene. I know you’re as curious about me as I am about you.
Her name on his lips sounded intimate. Selene shivered, but held her ground.
— That doesn’t matter. You’re in enemy territory, and my family will not tolerate insults.
— Maybe I just want peace — Rael said, unexpectedly sincere.
For a moment, Selene’s heart faltered. But she quickly regained her composure.
— I hope it’s true, because if it’s not... I won’t be able to protect you from what’s to come.
She walked away, but Rael caught up with her before she could leave the library.
— If you really want to observe me, do it properly. Spend the rest of the day with me and see if I’m up to something.
Selene hesitated, but curiosity got the better of her.
— Okay. But only because I want to know what you’re really doing here.
— Perfect. I have some things to take care of in town. We can start now.
They walked side by side to Nathan’s bar. On the way, Selene broke the silence.
— About last night at the bar... with Lysandra.
— What’s wrong with her?
— You seemed interested.
Rael smiled.
— Interested is a strong word. Lysandra is intriguing, but she’s not the one I’m interested in.
Selene felt her heart race.
— And who would you be interested in, then?
Rael stopped, staring at her intensely.
— Someone who doesn’t reveal themselves easily. Someone with secrets as deep as mine. Someone like you, perhaps.
Selene felt her face flush, but Rael changed the subject.
At the Bar
At the bar, Nathan greeted them with a smile.
— Nathan! I came to talk about that job — said Rael.
— Sure. I need someone to cover the afternoon shift.
Rael looked at Selene provocatively.
— Want to watch? You can start now. It’s going to be a long night.
— I’m here to observe. That’s all — she replied, crossing her arms.
Rael worked late, demonstrating a natural charisma with the customers. Selene watched silently, intrigued. When he finished, Nathan approved of his performance.
— The job is yours, if you want to keep it.
— Thanks, Nathan. I’ll think about it.
Rael approached Selene.
— I’ll take you home.
— I don’t know... my family...
— We’re just picking up the bike. I’ll drop you off at the door.
Selene relented. Soon, they were on the road under the crescent moon. Selene held tightly to his waist, feeling the adrenaline and a strange sense of freedom.
But when they arrived at the Darkblood estate, they found the entire clan waiting for them. Darius, Lucien, and Gabriel were at their head.
— It seems our guest has no respect for the city rules — Darius said menacingly.
Rael remained impassive.
— And what are you going to do about it? — he asked defiantly. He turned to Selene, ignoring the others. — It’s been an interesting day. I hope you enjoyed getting out of your family bubble for a bit.
Selene didn’t answer. Rael put on his helmet and looked at the clan.
— You know where to find me if you want to try something. But I suggest you think it over.
Then he accelerated the motorcycle, disappearing down the road.
The Darkbloods
Selene stood still, her heart racing. Lysandra approached, her smile curious.
— He’s interesting, don’t you think?
— Yes — Selene murmured, almost without realizing it. — He’s different.
Darius, Lucien, and Gabriel remained silent, irritated by Rael’s boldness.
— That wolf is going to be trouble — Darius said.
Lucien smirked.
— I like him. It’s not often someone faces the clan head-on.
Selene, without saying a word, walked toward the mansion. She knew there would be questions, reprimands, perhaps even punishment. But all she could think about was that lone wolf and what his presence would mean for everyone.
