Chapter 9 Chapter 9
The Darkblood Mansion
The sun had risen only hours ago, but the Darkblood mansion was already abuzz with activity. Selene woke early, still unsettled by the previous night’s events. The hushed chatter of the clan members in the main hall echoed through the corridors, thick with tension. She knew her family was up to something; the new wolf’s presence in town had made them uneasy.
After getting ready, she descended the stairs, feeling everyone’s eyes on her. Darius and Lucien were sitting at the table, whispering something to each other. Gabriel, still with an expression of suppressed fury, remained leaning against the wall, as if waiting for someone to speak. Amara, the matriarch, stood elegant and cool as ever, while Victor observed everything with his calculating gaze.
— Good morning — Selene greeted, trying to sound carefree, but the heavy atmosphere in the room made her tense.
Victor watched her for a moment before giving a slight nod. Amara approached Selene, a smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
— Selene, we need to discuss the new wolf situation — Amara said, her voice soft but authoritative. — He’s becoming a distraction, and that’s not something we can ignore.
Selene remained calm, though her heart raced. She knew they didn’t like Rael, but something in her wanted to defend him, even without understanding why.
— He hasn’t done anything to us — she replied carefully. — Maybe we should wait and see what he really wants.
Darius laughed, a low, mocking sound.
— He’s a wolf, Selene. They’re unpredictable and dangerous. Do you really want to risk him causing trouble?
Selene was about to respond when Victor raised his hand, silencing the room.
— Let’s not make any rash decisions — Victor said, his cold eyes sweeping over each person present. — However, we must keep a close eye on him. Selene, since you’ve already encountered him a few times, we want you to continue observing him. We need to learn more about his intentions and whether he poses a real threat.
She nodded, having no other choice. It was clear they still underestimated her for being only human, but perhaps she could use that to her advantage to try to understand Rael and his true nature.
— Of course — she agreed. — I’ll keep watching him.
With the conversation over, the clan members dispersed to their duties. Selene, however, remained still for a moment, trying to process everything. She knew she would have to be careful, both with Rael and her own family. The situation was becoming more complicated than she had imagined.
Rael’s Morning
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Rael woke to the first rays of sunlight streaming through the hotel window. He sat up in bed, running his hands over his face. The previous night had passed in a blur, but he couldn’t forget the intensity in Selene’s eyes or the way she reacted when her family showed up.
He got up and went straight to the shower. The cold water helped clear his thoughts. He knew he was playing a dangerous game by staying in Ravenshade. The vampires were keeping an eye on him, especially the Darkblood clan. His encounter with Selene’s brothers had confirmed that they wouldn’t hesitate to take drastic action if he became a problem.
After showering, he got dressed and got on his motorcycle, determined to explore the city further during the day. He needed to better understand the territory and the limits of the vampires’ presence. Leaving the hotel, he noticed that the city seemed quiet, but he knew he could be observed at any moment. His instincts kept him alert.
He headed for the forest, a place where he felt more at ease. The dense trees and sounds of nature always calmed him. He knew he needed to be careful, not just with vampires, but with any strange movements.
As he entered the forest, he felt instantly lighter. He got off his bike and began walking, trying to shake off the feeling of being watched. Despite his encounter with Selene the night before, something told him she wouldn’t be a problem — at least not yet.
As he walked, he thought about what Cedric had told him about vampires. He needed to be cautious. He had no intention of starting a war, but he wouldn’t back down if they came after him either.
The Bar Encounter
Later, as night fell, Rael decided to return to Nathan’s bar. He needed to clarify a few things with the bartender and perhaps learn more about the vampire presence in the city. As he entered, he noticed the curious looks of the regulars, but ignored them. He headed to the bar, where Nathan was already preparing a drink.
— Back so soon? — Nathan asked, raising an eyebrow.
Rael gave a slight smile.
— Let’s just say this city has more secrets than I expected.
Nathan smiled back, but his eyes held a serious expression.
— Ravenshade is like that. You never know what you’ll find. Or who you’ll find.
Rael nodded, taking the drink Nathan offered him. He sat on one of the high stools, watching the bar scene. He knew he would need to be strategic if he wanted to remain in Ravenshade without any problems.
As he sipped his drink, he felt someone approaching. He turned and saw Selene entering the bar, alone this time. She spotted him and, after hesitating for a moment, began walking toward him.
Rael couldn’t help but smile when he saw her. It seemed like this evening would be more interesting than he’d anticipated.
Selene stopped in front of Rael, her eyes fixed on him, as if trying to decipher something. The tension between them was palpable, a mix of curiosity and undeniable attraction.
— Did you decide to show up alone today? — Rael asked, his voice husky and teasing.
— It seems so — Selene replied with newfound confidence. She tilted her head, watching him intently. — You have a habit of attracting trouble, you know?
Rael laughed, a low, deep sound that made Selene shiver involuntarily. He leaned forward, approaching her in an almost predatory manner.
— Maybe. Or maybe I just like living on the edge. What about you, Selene? Why are you so interested in me?
Selene felt her face heat under Rael’s piercing gaze. He was dangerous, she knew, but there was a part of her that wanted to lose herself in that danger.
— I don’t know — she replied, her voice quieter than she intended. — Maybe I want to understand why you’re here. Or maybe I just want to... understand you.
Rael took a step toward her, invading her personal space. Selene held her breath, feeling the electricity in the air.
— Be careful, Selene — he murmured, almost a whisper. — Sometimes, understanding someone can mean losing yourself in that person.
Selene shivered. Part of her wanted to retreat, but another, bolder part wanted more.
— Maybe I want to get lost a little — she said, surprising even herself.
Rael’s eyes darkened. He leaned in even closer, his lips inches from hers. Selene closed her eyes, but instead of kissing her, he moved his lips to her ear.
— I’ll give you some advice — he whispered, his voice low and husky. — Stay away from me. Because if you get any closer, there’s no going back.
Selene felt a shiver run through her body. She wanted to run away, but she also wanted to surrender.
— Maybe I don’t want to be away — she replied firmly, despite the storm raging inside her.
Rael watched her for a moment before smiling enigmatically.
— In that case, let’s see how far you’re willing to go.
Selene felt butterflies in her stomach, but also an excitement she couldn’t deny.
As Rael walked away to the bar, letting her process everything, she knew she was about to enter a dangerous game. But for some reason, the idea didn’t scare her. On the contrary, she looked forward to what was to come.
Selene stood there for a few moments, trying to gather her thoughts, but the feeling of attraction to Rael still haunted her. She decided she needed to return home, though she knew her path was far from clear now.
Reflections
Meanwhile, Rael was talking to Nathan.
— Looks like you had an interesting day — the bartender commented. — What happened?
Rael looked away, thoughtful.
— Let’s just say I met someone who made me reconsider some things.
Nathan arched his eyebrow.
— You seem interested, but also cautious.
Rael chuckled softly.
— I’m trying to understand my own feelings. And evaluate whether it’s worth getting more involved.
The conversation continued, but Rael’s mind was elsewhere, fixed on Selene. He knew that involvement with her could bring trouble with her clan, but he couldn’t ignore the connection he felt.
Later, upon returning to the hotel, Rael lay down but couldn’t sleep right away. Across town, Selene was also awake, staring at the ceiling. They were both thinking the same thing: the growing intensity that was drawing them closer and the dangers it would bring.
Even though they were aware of the risks, none of them seemed willing to back down
