Chapter 12 Chapter 12
Rael sighed, tilting his head slightly to the side as he watched her.
— I didn’t mean to hurt him, Selene, but he attacked me. You know the rules as well as I do. I’m not the type to take kindly to being bullied, even by someone in my own family.
She felt a knot form in her stomach. He was right, of course, but the situation was much more complicated than a simple power struggle. Gabriel was her brother, and she knew the clan wouldn’t let that go unnoticed.
— Things aren’t that simple... — she murmured, more to herself than to him.
Rael took a step forward, making Selene’s heart race.
— I know they’re not simple. Nothing is simple when it comes to you — he said, his voice laden with a sincerity that struck her like a blow. — What I’m feeling... is more than just a passing interest, Selene. I’ve tried to stay away from you, but it seems like no matter what I do, you always find me.
She blinked, surprised by the intensity in his words. There was a strength in his tone that drew her in, yet frightened her at the same time. He was a lone wolf — dangerous, unpredictable — but there was a vulnerability in him she hadn’t expected.
— What if I don’t want to be away from you? — The words escaped her lips before she could stop them, and she blushed immediately, hating herself for being so blunt.
Rael smiled — a sad, knowing smile.
— Then this will only complicate things further, won’t it? — he murmured, raising his hand slowly to touch her face. — Because I can’t promise I’ll walk away... not when I’m so drawn to you.
The touch of his fingers on her skin sent a current through her body. Selene felt the heat rise in her chest. She knew it was wrong, that she was playing with fire, but when he leaned in, she couldn’t resist.
The kiss was intense — full of passion and all the unspoken desire they had tried to suppress. Rael’s hands gripped her tightly, pulling her close as she melted into him, forgetting everything else. Their lips moved together with urgency, an almost desperate need to connect in a way words never could.
Rael held her close, feeling her heartbeat racing against his own. Each breath, each touch, was a war between restraint and desire. He wanted her — not just as a wolf wants his mate, but as a man who had finally found someone who saw through the darkness within him.
Hidden in the shadows, Diana watched silently. She had masked her scent with a potion, making herself undetectable. Her sharp eyes studied the scene before her — Rael and Selene, locked in a forbidden embrace. Surprise flickered in her gaze, followed by curiosity. This could only spell trouble. The hunter and the vampire princess — it was a disaster waiting to happen.
She should report it to the clan. Yet something stopped her. There was a strange pull between them, something raw and dangerous... and she wanted to see how far it would go.
Selene pulled away, breathless, her skin still tingling from his touch. Her lips throbbed, her heart thundered in her chest. It felt as if the world had vanished — leaving only the two of them, suspended in that dangerous, beautiful moment.
— What now? — she whispered. — What do we do?
Rael ran a hand through his hair, a gesture Selene had learned meant he was thinking hard. His eyes, once soft, were now sharp, full of determination.
— Now — he said, locking eyes with her — we pretend this moment never happened. At least for now.
She opened her mouth to protest, but he placed a finger gently over her lips.
— I know what you’re going to say, but it’s for your own good — he continued, his voice firm but laced with genuine concern. — Your clan won’t let this go. Not now that they know who I am and what I can do. They’ll use you against me... or worse, they’ll hurt you.
Selene bit her lip, fear flickering in her chest. He was right. Her family — Victor, Amara, Gabriel, Darius — they would do anything to protect the clan’s traditions, even if it meant destroying her to do so.
— So that’s it? — she asked softly, sadness weighing down her voice. — Are we just going to pretend nothing happened?
Rael sighed and stepped closer again, his expression gentler now.
— At least for now — he said quietly, lifting her chin with his finger so she met his gaze. — But that doesn’t mean I’ll stop thinking about you... or wanting you.
Selene’s heart twisted painfully. She wanted to tell him not to go, not to leave her standing there. But she knew he was right — they both needed to be cautious.
Rael took a step back, forcing distance between them. His expression hardened again, though his eyes betrayed the battle raging inside him — between instinct and reason.
— Take care of yourself, Selene — he said, his tone low, almost a growl. — And keep your eyes open. There’s more to this world than you can imagine.
With those words, he turned and walked away, disappearing into the darkness. Selene stood frozen, her body trembling, her heart aching. She wanted to run after him — to call his name — but her legs wouldn’t move.
From her hiding place, Diana watched, her expression unreadable. Things were spiraling faster than she’d expected. The forbidden romance between Selene and Rael could shatter the fragile balance between vampires and werewolves. One mistake... and the city would burn.
But for now, she simply observed, fascinated by how two worlds could collide so violently.
Selene walked home in silence, her heart still racing, her mind a storm of emotions. She knew she was walking straight into danger — but every second with Rael had been worth it.
As she entered the Darkblood mansion’s moonlit garden, a figure appeared before her in a blur. Diana stood there, her dark eyes gleaming, a mysterious smile curving her lips.
— You were quick to return — Diana said, her tone playful and sharp. — I thought you and Rael would spend more time together.
A chill ran down Selene’s spine. Diana had seen it. And if she had... everything could fall apart.
— Diana, please — Selene whispered urgently. — You can’t tell anyone about this. No one can know.
Diana tilted her head, owl-like, her gaze unblinking.
— Don’t worry, dear — she said at last, her tone deceptively soft. — You make a lovely couple. It’s just... such a shame it’s so dangerous.
Selene’s heart pounded as she searched Diana’s eyes, trying to read her. There was mischief there, and something darker — amusement, perhaps.
— So you won’t tell? — Selene asked, her voice trembling between hope and fear.
Diana smiled faintly and shook her head.
— Not yet — she replied, pulling a small glass vial from her bag and handing it to Selene. — But you’ll need this.
Selene took the vial carefully. Inside, a crimson liquid shimmered faintly in the moonlight.
— What is it?
— A potion — Diana explained. — Use it every time you bathe. It will mask the scent of the wolf on you. It should keep suspicions away... for now.
Selene held the vial tightly, torn between gratitude and unease. Diana was helping her — but Diana never did anything without a reason. There was always a price.
— Thank you — Selene murmured, forcing her voice to remain calm.
— Don’t thank me yet — Diana replied, her smile unwavering. — Just be careful, Selene. You’re walking a very thin line.
With that, she turned and disappeared into the mansion’s shadowed halls, her footsteps silent.
Selene stood for a long moment, staring at the vial in her hand. The weight of her secret pressed on her chest.
Later, in her room, she followed Diana’s instructions. She poured the potion into her bath, watching the crimson liquid swirl through the water. It smelled faintly of iron and roses. As she washed, she felt the wolf scent fading from her skin — replaced by something strange and cold.
When she stepped out, she felt calmer... but deep down, she knew peace wouldn’t last.
Meanwhile, across town, Rael sat in his hotel room, a faint smile on his lips as he replayed the night in his mind. Despite the danger, despite the risk, every second with Selene had been worth it. But he knew the truth — secrecy was the only way to keep them both safe.
And elsewhere, in a dimly lit rented room, Tobias stood by the window, eyes fixed on the night. His hand rested on the silver dagger at his belt, his gaze hard. He could feel the darkness creeping through Ravenshade — the scent of blood, of corruption.
The vampires were the true rot of this city. The wolves were wild, yes — but they belonged to nature. The vampires, however, were parasites.
Tobias tightened his grip on the blade, a cold determination hardening within him.
He had come to Ravenshade to hunt. And soon... the hunt would begin.
