Chapter 11 Chapter 11

Chapter 11 Chapter 11
Later that day, Nathan’s bar was bustling. Among the patrons, a discreet-looking man was attentive to everything around him. Tobias, the vampire hunter newly arrived in town, was watching the proceedings with quiet interest. He still knew nothing about Rael or his connection to the clan, but he was in Ravenshade to gather information about the supernatural activities in the area.
The tension in the city was increasingly palpable, and everyone felt that something big was coming.
In the dim light of Nathan’s bar, the air was thick with conversation and low music. Rael, already familiar with Ravenshade’s nightlife scene, maintained a relaxed posture as he worked. His sharp gaze caught every detail, but his mind was elsewhere — mostly on the tense meeting with the Darkblood Clan and the strange, magnetic bond forming between him and Selene.
As Rael poured a drink, Nathan approached with that easy confidence of someone who always knew more than he admitted.
— Looks like it’s a lively night — Nathan commented, handing Rael a bottle. — Have you noticed anything strange around here?
Rael raised an eyebrow, a faint smile touching his lips.
— Weird is relative, don’t you think? — He opened the bottle with ease, pouring smoothly. — Especially in a town like Ravenshade.
Nathan laughed, a deep sound that blended with the chatter and music.
— True. But I think you know what I’m talking about. — He cast a meaningful glance toward a corner of the bar, where a few regulars sat, more focused on their surroundings than on their own conversations.
Rael followed his gaze, noticing the subtle stares and quiet presences observing from the shadows. A faint scent reached him — a mix of curiosity and caution. Vampires, or perhaps humans bound to them.
— Are you saying we have company? — Rael asked casually, though his instincts were already sharp.
— We always have company, my friend. — Nathan winked before walking away to serve another customer, leaving Rael with the uneasy feeling that the bartender knew far more than he let on.
Meanwhile, at the back of the bar, Tobias kept to himself. As a vampire hunter, he knew the importance of staying invisible. He was there to watch, to gather knowledge — and the recent movements in Ravenshade had caught his attention. He’d noticed Rael, of course, and the subtle maneuvers of the Darkblood Clan. Something was brewing in this city, something powerful.
Later that night, Selene entered the bar, her presence instantly drawing attention. She seemed out of place among the noise and smoke, but her steady steps showed she was there with purpose. Her eyes scanned the room until they found Rael. She walked toward him with determination.
— We need to talk — Selene said without preamble as she reached him.
Rael looked at her with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes, setting aside the cloth he’d been using to wipe the counter.
— I think you’ve made it clear you don’t like my... recent activities, haven’t you? — he said, referring to the incident with Gabriel.
Selene’s eyes narrowed.
— You had no right to hurt him like that. He’s my brother.
Rael leaned forward slightly, his tone calm but his voice carrying a dangerous undertone that made her shiver.
— And he had no right to try to attack me. I’m not here to cause trouble, but if I’m attacked, I’ll defend myself. It was a warning. — He straightened, his gaze steady and unflinching. — And you know it.
Selene drew in a deep breath, struggling with the turmoil inside her. There was something about him — something dark, magnetic — that frightened her as much as it pulled her closer.
— You don’t understand... — she began, but he interrupted softly.
— Maybe I understand more than you think, Selene. — He took a step closer, his voice lower now, almost intimate. — And maybe you’re here not just to threaten me... but to understand this.
Her heartbeat quickened, her eyes locked with his for what felt like forever. In that brief silence, Rael looked at her as though he saw through her completely — beyond appearances, beyond clan loyalties.
Before she could reply, a familiar, playful voice cut through the tension.
— Am I interrupting something? — Lysandra asked, her tone dripping with false innocence as she appeared beside Selene.
Rael smiled faintly at Lysandra, though his eyes never left Selene.
— We were just... catching up — he said lightly.
Lysandra laughed softly and tilted her head toward her cousin.
— You really like walking the edge, cousin. Playing with lone wolves... and dangerous ones.
Selene frowned, but Rael spoke first.
— Don’t worry, Lysandra. I don’t bite... unless asked. — He threw Selene a knowing look, and she blushed, quickly looking away.
Lysandra seemed satisfied with the provocation. With a final smirk, she turned to leave, her last words laced with warning.
— Be careful, cousin. Wolves are... unpredictable.
As she disappeared into the crowd, Rael turned back to Selene.
— I’m not the monster your clan believes I am, Selene. — His tone was steady now, stripped of playfulness. — And you know it. You feel it.
Selene fought the emotions rising inside her, but his words struck deep. She knew he was right — at least partly. There was something about him she couldn’t ignore, something that drew her despite every instinct screaming that she should stay away.
Before she could respond, Rael turned and walked away with that same mysterious smile, leaving her standing there, tangled in her thoughts.
From his shadowed seat, Tobias observed the exchange with keen interest. There was far more happening in Ravenshade than he’d anticipated — and that lone wolf, Rael, seemed to stand right at the center of it all.
Selene hurried out of the bar, her thoughts in chaos. She couldn’t let Rael get away with what he’d done, yet his words and his gaze haunted her. He stirred something within her no one else ever had. When she finally found him behind the bar, he was leaning against a wall, waiting — eyes unreadable, expression calm.
— So, you followed me — Rael said, unsurprised.
Selene opened her mouth, but no words came. For a moment, she just stood there, facing him, searching for the right way to speak.
— You... you shouldn’t have done that to Gabriel — she finally said, her voice softer than she intended. — You only made things worse.
