Chapter 13 Chapter 14
The sun rose above the horizon, bathing Ravenshade in a pale, ethereal light. Rael woke early — something unusual for him. His instincts had been sharpened since the night before, as if something unseen was about to unfold. He stretched, then looked out the hotel window, watching the silent city slowly stir to life.
A firm knock broke the stillness. Rael opened the door to find Cedric, the alpha of the city pack, standing tall. His presence filled the space — calm, powerful, commanding.
— Rael — Cedric began, going straight to the point. — We’re organizing an activity in the forest tonight. A celebration under the full moon. I’d like you to join us. It’s a good opportunity to know the pack better — and to strengthen your bonds.
Rael nodded, recognizing the weight of the invitation. Though he had always walked alone, he knew the importance of keeping peace with the local pack — and perhaps, of belonging, even if just for a night.
— I appreciate the invitation — he replied, his tone steady, respectful. — I’ll be there.
Cedric seemed satisfied. With a nod, he turned and left, leaving Rael alone with his thoughts. The silence returned, heavier this time. He knew the night ahead would be meaningful — not only to build trust with the pack but to understand his own place in this city. It was a step toward something unfamiliar, something he wasn’t sure he wanted, yet couldn’t resist.
Later, as he prepared for the day, his phone rang. Selene’s name glowed on the screen, pulling a faint smile from him. He answered.
— Selene — he greeted, his voice softer than usual.
— Rael — she replied, a note of hesitation in her tone. — I wanted to ask if we’ll see each other today. We need to talk.
Rael paused, thinking.
— I would, but I’ve been invited to a pack gathering tonight. Cedric — the town’s alpha — wants me to attend a full moon celebration in the forest.
Silence lingered for a few seconds. Selene knew what the full moon meant to wolves; she couldn’t stand in the way of that.
— I see — she said finally. — Then maybe tomorrow?
— Yes — Rael promised. — Tomorrow, for sure.
They ended the call with quiet understanding. She wasn’t just a passing presence in his life anymore — and he knew it. Yet tonight, something deeper awaited him: the moon, the pack, and a test of who he truly was beneath the human mask.
The day passed in restless anticipation. The hours dragged as the pull of the moon grew stronger. For wolves, the full moon meant connection, freedom, and unity. Even as a lone wolf, Rael could feel it — that primal force stirring in his blood, calling him to the forest.
As dusk descended, he put on a dark shirt and comfortable pants, ready for the transformation to come. Leaving the hotel, he made his way toward the forest. The pack’s energy already filled the night air. Above, the full moon rose — vast and silver, casting shifting shadows through the trees.
At the clearing’s center stood Cedric in human form, waiting. Around him, the pack gathered — some still human, others already wolves, their eyes glinting in the moonlight. The air buzzed with anticipation.
— Welcome — Cedric called out, his voice echoing in the stillness. — Tonight, we celebrate our nature and strengthen our unity.
Rael nodded, sensing the gravity in every heartbeat around him. Cedric lifted his arms, his voice low and commanding.
— The full moon calls us. May our spirits run as one beneath its light.
He tilted his head back and howled — deep, powerful, ancient. The others joined him, a haunting chorus that filled the night.
Rael let go. His body shifted — bones cracking, muscles stretching, senses awakening. His human shell melted away, and the wolf within took form. White fur shimmered beneath the moonlight as energy surged through him — the wild, timeless power of his kind.
The pack howled again, their voices echoing through Ravenshade Forest. And for the first time in a long while, Rael didn’t feel alone.
