Chapter 114
Chapter 114
Damien’s POV.
I thought the most heartbreaking sight I would ever witness was Amara hugging another man, yet I was mistaken. Why did those words feel like a thousand needles embedding deep within my heart and causing me so much torment?
“Now you know what it felt like when I saw you with Natasha.”
I clenched my fists tightly, questioning why we couldn’t move past this. Weren’t we done with this yet? I had even kicked Natasha out just to put an end to this endless cycle of nonsense argument.
“If you’re so tired of all of this, why don’t we just end it then?”
My chest heaved in jitter. Had my worst nightmare become a reality? No, I couldn’t bear the thought of letting her go. Amara belonged to me from the very beginning, and I would never be willing to give her to anyone else.
My palms grew cold, and my forehead furrowed in distress. The words I heard felt surreal, as if my own ears couldn’t process what was being said.
“If you’re so tired, let’s both take a break.”
I didn’t mean to say I was tired, it was just the stress that was too much for me to handle. I wanted to keep it all together, but I felt the monster within me start to take hold of me. But, why couldn’t I express myself more accurately?
“What?” I couldn’t contain the shock in my voice. “Are you kidding me? We’re just talking and suddenly you want to break up with me like we’re just in a sort of a relationship? Amara, we’re husband and wife. You can’t just offer me a divorce. We need to agree to it together. But I’m not agreeing to any of this, and I never will.”
My frustration was apparent, as I felt a combination of confusion and helplessness tug at my emotions. What if she really wanted a divorce? Should I start digging graves for the divorce lawyers and judges of Alvinia?
“Well, that’s just great,” chimed in the voice of my inner wolf.
Perhaps I was overreacting. Maybe she didn’t mean it either. Maybe if I swallowed my pride and tried to apologize, she would think about it first.
“Look, I’m sorry. That’s not what I want. I was just frustrated and–”
But before I could finish, she interrupted me, her tone heavy with anger, and still insisted on a divorce. Find someone better? How could I when I found her stubbornness, ironically, endearing?
This was a misunderstanding, and we could work through it. As much as it pained me to see our relationship hit rock bottom, all couples went through such rough patches every now and then, to test the strength of their bond.
I tried to keep a positive mindset, but my attempts to reach out to her were met with her cold distance, causing a sharp ache within me. When she mentioned moving out, it felt as if my heart had plummeted to the pit of my stomach.
In a panicked realization, I understood I had messed up badly. I didn’t want to raise our pups in a broken family, so I had to try to change her mind using them. It was worth a shot, at least. I didn’t want to lose her, and I certainly didn’t want our children to suffer the consequences of our crumbling relationship.
Why was she giving up so easily? What had happened to us? Had I lost her for good? The connection that had once been so strong between us now felt weak and fragile. It was as if I couldn’t even feel her emotions anymore. Where had our bond gone? Did she feel it fading too, or was it all in my head?
When she started to walk away, I grew even more worried.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going to Masha. I just need to cool my head since I feel like I’m about to spontaneously combust from being around you,” she replied sharply, sounding annoyed with me.
A part of me knew she needed time to cool off, but it didn’t ease the ache in my chest.
I sighed, defeated and hoping that distance would somehow help. “Fine, just come back tonight,” I instructed, and she nodded.
But as the next day came and went, she didn’t return home.
“Alpha, look out!”
I heard the warning and reacted fast, grabbing the attacking wolf and swiftly killing it with a single blow. Without hesitation, I separated its head from its body.
Catching my breath, I surveyed the scene around me. My pack warriors had also transformed. I saw the exhaustion on their faces, and I knew that we had all had a long and grueling day. Three attacks in one day had taken a toll on all of us.
“Are you alright, Alpha?” Lucian asked.
I nodded, taking a deep breath. “Clean up this mess, then head back to the pack house. We need to hold a meeting,” I ordered, and they all nodded in response.
I sprinted towards the pack house. As I ran, I could feel that someone or something was watching me. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t detect the scent of a rogue or even one of my wolves anywhere nearby. But I felt the shadowy presence closing in on me faster and faster.
I slowed down just as I reached the front of the pack house, ready to defend myself against whatever was lurking in the shadows. But it never struck.
“Maybe it was just spying,” my wolf spoke up.
Could it be?
I swept my gaze across the forest one last time before entering the pack house. I was about to climb the stairs when I was startled to find Natasha waiting for me in the living room.
“What are you doing here, Natasha?” I asked.
She let a tiny grin grace her lips. “I have some information for you, Damien. But I hope you believe me,” she said.
I studied her closely. “Tell me,” I urged, my curiosity piqued despite my skepticism.
“Somebody close to you is hiding a Reprobatus,” she divulged.
Natasha’s eyes darted nervously around the room, as if she feared being overheard.
“Who?” I asked, my voice barely concealing my unease.
“I’m not entirely certain, but I believe it’s your wife,” she confessed, her shoulders rising and falling in a shrug.
I maintained a serious expression, not letting on that I didn’t like what she said. I thought of my wife, but immediately dismissed the notion. Amara would never do something like that.
“Perhaps that’s why she’s been acting strangely lately? I’ve heard rumors from other pack members about your constant fights. Maybe she’s involved with someone else?” she speculated.
My temper flared and I balled my hands into fists, desperately searching for a rational explanation that would discredit Natasha’s claim. I didn’t want to believe it, but the seed of doubt had been planted. Could it be possible? Was Amara distancing herself from me because she was having an affair with a rejected wolf? Who was he? Why had she concealed this from me?
“Just consider it, Damien. I hope it helps you,” Natasha said before approaching me and tapping my shoulder.
While she was doing that, I gazed into her eyes and noticed a strange glitch, a flicker of something amiss.
What was that?
“Who knows? Perhaps she’s the one responsible,” she postulated with a smirk before finally departed.
My fists tightened further. Why did I feel like I wanted to believe her words? My thoughts spun in a whirlwind. I despised the way I was doubting my own wife.
What in the world was happening?
I glanced at my phone once again. I couldn’t count how many times I tried to reach Amara. Her independent nature could be infuriating at times, as she preferred to handle things on her own without butting in.
I sighed and decided to check up on our children instead. I just hoped they hadn’t noticed the tension between their mother and me.
As I descended, I spotted Lucian and Ralph on the sofa, exchanging banter. I furrowed my brow as Ralph quickly moved his face away from Lucian.
“Where are the pups, Beta?” I asked.
Lucian cleared his throat, his face turning red as he avoided making eye contact. I raised an eyebrow, noticing his discomfort.
“Alpha, they’re out with Portia. They’re meeting a friend,” he answered.
A friend?
“And who might this friend be? It would have been nice if she informed me before taking the kids along,” I voiced my frustration. Those two friends really had the same attitude.
“Well, I’ve seen the boy. He seems harmless. They’re at the playground,” Ralph replied.
I breathed a sigh of relief. The playground was just a short distance away from the pack.
I turned to leave the room when the door opened, revealing one of my pups. She was in tears, which instantly made me worry.
“Daddy, please, help Samael!”
