Chapter 113
Chapter 113
Damien’s POV.
“Alpha, Luna and the pups went out. We failed to catch up with them.”
I sighed and glanced at my Beta, giving him a nod before dismissing him. I reached for my phone on the table. My brow creased into a frown. I noticed that she still hadn’t replied. Darn it! I had been trying to contact her almost fifty times now.
“Maybe she’s still mad,” my wolf interjected, causing me to pause and stare into space.
“Could be,” I groaned. “She’s been acting strange.”
My wolf scoffed. “You’re the one who’s acting strange. Why did you let Natasha stay in the pack house? It was a dumb move.”
I furrowed my brows even deeper. “Why is that a problem? She knows something that could be valuable to us. And to be honest, I don’t sense anything suspicious about her.”
“That’s precisely it! That’s what I’ve been talking about. You’ve been odd lately. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but something about her makes me uneasy. Before, you were against letting her into our lives, but who’s the one being weird now? I’d say it’s you.”
I let out a tired sigh and stared at the screen of my phone. My eyes caught sight of my wallpaper. It was a picture of my wife with our pups.
“I don’t know, but I don’t feel anything about Natasha as I did when we were just childhood friends. Some memories flashed back when I saw the fear in her eyes in the forest. It reminded me of when we first met. I can’t say I’m not worried about her because she’s like a sister to me, although she has changed.”
Or perhaps this is just how life works? We couldn’t expect the one we used to know to stay the same over time.
“Yes, I know, but don’t you feel any guilt? Because deep down, you knew she felt something for you that you couldn’t reciprocate,” my wolf said. That got me thinking.
Did I?
“I understand, Damien, but keep in mind, you have to make a choice. Choose between the bond with the person you used to be with or the person who is now with you, without any guilt.”
I chuckled. “You already know who I will always choose. That’s not even a question.”
“Tsk! You’re so dramatic.”
With a sigh, I tried calling Amara once again. I needed to ensure the safety of the pups during these uncertain times. However, as usual, she didn’t pick up the call. I face-palmed and paced back and forth.
Seriously? Was she that mad?
“You wanted to see me, Damien?”
I glanced up from the papers I had been diligently working on and nodded in response.
“Have a seat,” I said, gesturing towards the chair across from me.
Taking in a deep breath, I looked over the reports of every pack, village, and territory that had been attacked. There were tons of them.
Natasha’s smile widened as she settled into the chair. “What’s up? Do you want to grab something? It’s lunchtime.”
I shook my head and decided to address the matter directly. “Natasha, I wanted to say this as politely as possible, but can you find a new place to live?”
I saw a change in her expression. Her smile faltered, and a hint of confusion crossed her face.
“What do you mean?”
I sighed softly. “I appreciate all of your help, but I believe it’s time for you to move out,” I explained gently. “It’s not personal, Natasha. I just think it’s best for us.”
“But… why? Did I do something wrong?" she asked, her voice cracking.
“Natasha, this has nothing to do with anything you’ve done wrong. We’re not the same anymore. I’m only letting you stay with us out of respect for our time together as childhood friends, and because you’re like a sister to me. I hope you don’t misinterpret that.”
She shook her head as if there was something she wanted to say but couldn’t, then she forced a bitter smile and nodded.
Her shoulders slumped, and she looked down, unable to meet my gaze. “I get it. After all, you still think of me as someone who might deceive you, don’t you?”
I closed my eyes and shook my head at her. “No, Natasha. That’s not what I’m saying at all,” I responded earnestly. “I don’t care about what you did in the past, I still consider you as my sister.”
After I uttered those words, the anguish in her eyes became even more visible.
She wiped away a tear. “Just a sister? What about all those times I stood by your side when you were lonely? I was there when you delivered your first speech as an Alpha. I was there when you graduated. I was there when you drowned your sorrows because your supposed mate belonged to someone else.”
“I never forced you to be with me all the time. I don’t mean to be harsh, but I’m trying to repair our family. You can be by my side, but only as a sister and nothing more. Trust me, you’ll find someone else soon.”
A bitter laugh escaped her lips, accompanied by fresh tears streaming down her face.
“I only want to help, and I’m terrified.”
I felt guilty as I registered the desperation in her voice. When I looked into her eyes, I blinked slightly because they momentarily dazzled me.
“Could you at least allow me to stay here? I need you, Damien,” she pleaded.
She stared intently at me, waiting for a response. Unsure of what I saw within her eyes, I pondered whether it was real or was it a figment of my imagination?
“I’m sorry,” I firmly refused, and as I maintained my gaze on her face, I could detect a hint of surprise.
For what reason?
“Come on, Damien,” she resisted.
Before I could respond, the door swung open and Ralph rushed in.
“Alpha! There’s another attack,” he informed me, and frustration twisted my features as I clutched at my hair.
Not again!
I swiftly rose from my seat. “Let’s go.”
“Damien, wait!” Natasha called out.
I was already at the door when she chased after me. Unlike earlier, her face displayed signs of agitation. I couldn’t help but wonder why.
“What about me?”
“Natasha, please! Just move out if you truly want to help me,” that was the last thing I said to her before trailing after Ralph.
I could only hope that she heeded my words.
A whole week had passed, and I couldn’t even talk to Amara. It was seriously starting to get on my nerves.
I wondered where these enemies were coming from. Hell! If I ever found out who was behind all of this, I would make sure they paid for it.
I opened the door to our bedroom, hoping to find my wife waiting for me, but instead, I was greeted by an empty space.
“Did she forget about dinner?” I muttered to myself.
“I don’t know. We’re together, don’t be such an idiot,” my wolf said
I groaned, feeling irritated. “Why are you always interfering with me?”
“You asked!”
I sank onto the bed and attempted to communicate with my wife through our mind link, but there was still nothing. I fell onto the mattress and stared up at the ceiling.
Why was our bond feeling so weak?
I hadn’t done anything to betray her trust. Could it be because of the stress caused by these relentless attacks? It seemed like the only logical explanation, but it didn’t make the situation any less disheartening.
“Damien!” I heard Dianne’s voice calling out. “Are you there? Is Amara with you?”
I hoped so.
“The dinner is ready,” she added.
Letting out another sigh, I sat up and glanced towards the closed bedroom door.
“Wait for me there. I’ll just change my clothes,” I replied.
“Okay.”
I tried to reach Amara again, this time using the phone, but like earlier, she was unreachable. Lost in thought, I found myself staring at our wedding picture hanging on the wall.
“I’m waiting for you, Luna.”
But to my disappointment, Amara didn’t show up until after dinner had ended. Thankfully, our pups enjoyed dinner together with their grandparents. It was enough for me to be content.
Where could she be? It was late at night, and she should have known it was dangerous outside. The enemies were even familiar with her face. What if something had happened to her? Worries started to grow within me as I patiently waited for her.
Time kept on ticking, another hour gone forever before I finally caught a whiff of her scent. I downed the remaining alcohol in my cup before standing up and heading towards the door to meet her.
I was going to punish this vixen.
I was prepared to confront her for her absence, but when I pushed the door open, there she was, perched on the stairs. She looked exhausted, and although I wanted to show her some compassion, I held myself back.
“Where have you been, Amara?” I asked, my voice cold. “Get up.”
I saw her freeze for a second before she stood up, looking at me with an innocent expression. I almost raised an eyebrow. She was trying to be cute to avoid the situation, but it wasn’t going to work on me tonight.
“Where have you been? Do you know what time it is?” I questioned, wanting her to understand how upset I was with her.
How could she wander around as if no one would be worried about her?
“Masha and I just had something to take care of,” she answered, but it didn’t satisfy me.
I could sense that she was lying and hiding something. Why was it so difficult for her to be honest with me? As her husband, I knew her well, and now she was deflecting the blame.
“Have I ever interfered with your affairs? Have I ever stuck my nose in your business when it took you away at this hour?”
“That’s not the point. We had an agreement, Amara.”
I thought we had resolved our issues during our last conversation. Apparently, we hadn’t.
Rubbing my face in exasperation, I felt lost. I didn’t know where to begin to fix things. I felt foolish for not knowing what needed to be addressed first. After all, I was the Alpha King. But she was my queen, wasn’t she? Damn it! Everything felt so overwhelming. With the constant attacks and now our misunderstanding, I didn’t know what to do anymore.
“I’m really tired, Damien. Can we just let this go?”
Is that it?
But before I could utter another word, she had already walked away, disappearing from my sight. Great.
“It’s amusing, isn’t it? Even I am miserable because my mate doesn’t want to talk to me. You, the mighty Alpha, looking foolish and almost insane, make me laugh. Perhaps you should just hand your crown over to Axel. You’ve become a coward.”
I rolled my gaze skyward at my wolf’s sarcastic comments. “Enough! If you actually want to be helpful, find a way for us to make it up to our mate. Otherwise, you’re just a useless wolf,” I snapped.
