Chapter 58 Hapiness Can't wait
I stood still, silent, trying to listen to their conversation.
"This way it's easier," he asserts, and I narrow my eyes.
"For me, it's perfect! Rachel is lucky to have you!" She replies, and he smiles.
"You should tell her that," he jokes, and she looks at him, confused.
"But you said you didn't want her to know, even made up a story for me to tell her if she asks," she retorts, and he shrugs.
"Yeah, I don't want her to know about this, but that doesn't stop you from remembering from time to time that I'm a great catch!" He jokes, and she nods her head.
My world was spinning. What was he doing here? He says goodbye to her and walks away while the older woman watches him from head to toe with admiration. Before she could enter the house, I hastened.
"Mrs. Fanning, what was Jayden doing at your house?" I asked, and she widened her eyes.
"Jayden? I don't know who that is. That was my nephew," she seems to search for a name in her head and ends up saying, "Jason!"
I narrowed my eyes, staring at the woman who clearly couldn't lie, and she gave up, rolling her eyes.
"Well, he asked me not to tell you, but he came to pay your rent. He paid the overdue rent, this month's, and also the next six months," she explains, and I freeze.
Why would he do that? I was completely dumbfounded when the older woman's voice was present.
"He really is a good boy. He will be an excellent husband! You're lucky to have him as a boyfriend," she says with a smile on her face, and I was still dazed.
"He's not my boyfriend," I explain, and she sighs.
"If he'd done this without being, imagine if he was. Don't be silly, men like him are rare!" She explains and enters the house without giving me a chance to respond.
I was standing there, completely stunned in that hallway, and this was becoming a habit for me. I receive a message on my phone, and when I see that it's from Jayden, my heart races.
"I'm waiting for you outside," I read the message, imagining his voice, and I couldn't help but smile.
I leave the building and see him standing there leaning against his car while trying to warm himself by rubbing his hands.
"What are you doing here?" I asked, as if I didn't know, and he shrugged.
"I came to pick you up for university," he says, opening the car door for me to get in, and I look at him confused.
"You said you were done, didn't you?" I asked, noticing that he was avoiding looking at me.
"I did, but I thought about it and we need each other, so we can keep our agreement, but without all that closeness. If we keep a safe distance, I think it can work. After all, you still need a job, and I still need a tutor," he explained, and I agreed.
So that's why he paid my rent? But that didn't make much sense. Why would he pay for the next six months if by then the semester will be over? Throughout the journey, we remained silent. He didn't look at me, and I found myself doing the same. There were many questions I wanted to ask. Why did he send Lexie yesterday? Why did he pay all these months of rent, and mainly, why did he change his mind so quickly? When we arrived at the university, we were about to go our separate ways because he had class and I had debate club, but before we went our separate ways, I called him.
"Jayden?" He turned around, looking at me for the first time today, and all my doubts seemed to vanish for a moment, so I just shook my head. "We need to start looking for people to help organize the charity ball," I reminded him, and he nodded before leaving.
I watched him leave for a while and finally walked to the room where the debate club met, and the youngest member of the club was radiant. It was noticeable even by the way she greeted us, and just by her joy, we knew that she had gotten back together with her ex-boyfriend. We weren't close, but there weren't many people who approved of this relationship since they were always breaking up and getting back together, so it didn't take long for one of the members to make a comment.
"I don't know how she can be so happy every time she comes back. She should be used to it by now," Julian commented and shook his head.
"She must have begged to come back again. I don't know what this girl was thinking," one of the girls commented in a judgmental tone.
The club's teacher laughed and seemed proud of the girl who danced with the papers in hand, so happy that she didn't even hear the comments of the others.
"Maybe she understood something you still need to learn," the teacher commented, and we all looked at her curiously before she continued, "To be at peace, we need to be constantly at war with our own ego. If apologizing was all she needed to do to be this happy, then I think she was just thinking about having peace." The older woman's teaching silenced us all and made me reflect.
Was I also one sentence away from happiness?
"Can we start?" The teacher asked, and I got up. I couldn't wait any longer.
"Teacher, I need to sort something out, and I'll be right back," I said and simply ran out of there.
I need to find Jayden. I need to tell him that I like him too. I don't want to have doubts. I'm going to take the step towards my happiness!
