Chapter 75: Mr. Windsor, Goodbye!
"Becca..."
The car was moving extremely slowly, causing the vehicles behind to honk repeatedly in frustration before finally switching lanes and speeding past.
Up ahead, Pinewood Mansion was getting closer and closer. Any further and they'd pass it.
Frederick said in a low voice, "Stay home tonight. I'll take you to school tomorrow morning, okay?"
"No thanks..."
Rebecca was playing a finger game with Alex, not even turning her head as she said, "My suitcase is already packed. Why go through all that trouble? Besides, I'm moving to Star Apartments on Friday and haven't packed anything yet. I need to go back and sort things out."
Frederick looked up at the intersection leading to Pinewood Mansion in the distance, deciding to try once more. "Peter had someone send the gifts to the house. Don't you want to take a look?"
"Just leave them there. The gifts don't have legs, they won't run away. I'll look at them when I come back on Friday."
"Plus, you and Alex took such a long nap this afternoon. Alex definitely won't sleep until late tonight. Don't you need to go back and keep him company?"
"...You're right!"
Rebecca nodded, and Frederick's heart lifted with hope.
Then he saw Rebecca pointing at the intersection they'd already passed, looking bewildered. "Never mind. It's too much hassle to turn around up ahead."
Looking at the intersection they'd already passed, Frederick fell silent.
Completely oblivious to Frederick's annoyed expression, Rebecca poked Alex's cheek. "You'll go to sleep nicely tonight, right?"
They'd only spent two short days together, yet it felt like they'd known each other for ages. So much so that Alex felt whatever Rebecca said must be right.
Alex nodded obediently: Yes!
Looking up again, he met Frederick's gaze in the rearview mirror—a look that said "this kid is hopeless."
Alex fell silent.
More than ten minutes later, the Maybach pulled up by the roadside at Empire University's east gate.
"Alex, study hard and make progress every day. See you Friday!"
Ruffling Alex's hair, Rebecca got out of the car, waved at Frederick, and walked forward pushing her suitcase.
There was complete silence behind her. Without looking back, Rebecca knew that Frederick was standing by the trunk at the rear of the car, quietly watching her until she entered the campus gate and disappeared from view. Only then would he get back in the car and leave.
Just like every time before.
On the cold winter night, the campus gate area was empty and desolate.
Thinking about not seeing each other for the next week.
And remembering that tender good morning kiss on Monday.
Rebecca's steps faltered.
Turning back, she saw Frederick standing by the rear of the car, hands in his pockets.
Under the dim yellow streetlights in the distance, the surrounding darkness was illuminated in varying shades of black.
Among all those shades of black, Frederick in his black cashmere coat seemed as if, no matter when she turned around, he would always be there, making her feel safe.
Rebecca bit her lip and walked back.
Instinctively glancing at the trunk, Frederick thought Rebecca had forgotten something.
His eyes filled with concern. "What's wrong?"
Rebecca shook her head.
In a moment, she was right in front of him.
"Mr. Windsor, goodbye!"
With a radiant smile, Rebecca stood on her tiptoes and kissed him.
Frederick's heart suddenly exploded.
The anger he'd felt seeing her surrounded by people.
The frustration from repeatedly asking her to stay while she insisted on not going home.
And the irritation about not seeing her for the next week.
All the negative emotions flew away the instant she kissed him. Frederick felt that his empty heart was suddenly filled to the brim.
Filled with her brilliant smile.
Her crisp "Mr. Windsor."
And this kiss, right now.
He reached out to wrap his arm around her waist, pulling her into his embrace.
Frederick lowered his head and deepened the kiss.
