Chapter 26: If You Don't Want to Die, Stay Away from Me!
"Frederick, I'm outside the Blue Bar, and I feel awful. Can you come get me, please?"
Frederick had just settled into bed when he got Rebecca's call.
Her voice on the other end was unusually frantic and shaky, each word trembling as if forced out through clenched teeth.
When she mentioned the Blue Bar, it was like a light bulb went off in Frederick's head.
"Don't hang up... I'll be there soon!"
Frederick's voice was calm and reassuring. He quickly rummaged through his drawer, pulling out another phone while changing his clothes and making a call.
"Get to the Blue Bar, find Rebecca, and lock it down! No one goes in or out. Don't let anyone leave!"
"Yes, sir!"
He heard the clear response on the other end of the line.
The sound of his belt buckle fastening.
The sound of him rushing down the stairs.
The sound of the car speeding off.
Under the streetlight, Rebecca leaned heavily against a utility pole, her teeth chattering.
"Rebecca!"
"I'm... I'm here..."
As soon as she spoke, Rebecca felt a wave of shame and embarrassment wash over her.
Her voice, restrained and heavy, combined with her labored breathing, revealed an unexpected allure.
Rebecca never imagined that one day, the seductive voice she had heard in romantic movies would come from her own mouth.
"Rebecca, did you check your schedule? How many classes do you have tomorrow morning?"
Frederick's voice on the other end was calm and steady, like snowflakes gently falling, bringing an inexplicable sense of peace.
Rebecca's scattered thoughts began to come together, and she forced herself to recall the schedule posted next to her desk, "Two classes... Jewelry Appreciation, and... Graphic Design."
Gasping for breath, she bit her lip hard to stop any more fragmented sounds from escaping.
For a moment, Rebecca wanted to hang up.
If she hung up, Frederick wouldn't hear her embarrassing sounds, and she wouldn't feel so humiliated!
But Frederick wouldn't let her. "Rebecca, just five more minutes, I..."
Rebecca was still holding the phone, trying to hear what Frederick was saying, when someone suddenly knocked the phone out of her hand.
The phone shattered a few steps away on the pavement, and Rebecca turned to see a group of young men with a cocky attitude approaching.
The blond man in the middle was the birthday boy from Blue Bar.
After several rounds of drinks, he and his friends had stepped out to use the restroom, only to see a stunningly beautiful girl under the streetlight.
In the cold night, her cheeks were flushed.
Leaning against the utility pole, she looked like she was about to collapse from drunkenness.
Hearing her seductive voice, the blond man immediately understood what was going on.
She had clearly been drugged!
He couldn't believe his luck—someone else had done the dirty work, and he was going to reap the benefits?
"Hey gorgeous, where do you live? We'll take you home."
Sniffing as if he could smell Rebecca's perfume, the blond man grew even more excited and reached out to touch her face.
"Get lost!"
Rebecca glanced at the dark road ahead, steeling herself to stand up straight. "My husband is on his way. If you don't want to die, you'd better back off!"
Under the bright streetlight, her delicate face was breathtakingly beautiful.
The blond man felt a rush of blood to a certain part of his body.
Clicking his tongue, he turned and gave his friends a knowing look. "Let's go. We'll help this lovely lady find her husband!"
"Got it!"
Amidst their laughter, Rebecca staggered toward the road.
She slipped and fell hard on the icy pavement.
She could feel someone's hand already on her coat.
Her knees and palms stung with pain, and tears welled up in her eyes. "Frederick..."
Headlights cut through the darkness, and the roar of engines signaled that a convoy was approaching.
