Chapter 203 The Unbeatable Number One
It had been over a month since they'd had their mighty fallout, and although they often ran into each other in classrooms and around campus, Rebecca and Jessica had tacitly chosen to ignore each other.
When Rebecca heard through mutual friends that Jessica and Dennis were together, it suddenly clicked why Jessica had always been so passively aggressive and seemed to dislike her.
She also realized, a bit late, why every time Dennis came to school to see her, Jessica would coincidentally have something to do and need to go out, and then the two of them would head off campus together, or he'd give her a ride.
As far as Rebecca was concerned, someone who could steal her best friend's boyfriend was never really a best friend to begin with.
And a true best friend would never develop even the slightest inappropriate feelings for her friend's boyfriend.
She thought about having someone deliver the invitation to Jessica, but worried something might go wrong.
Rebecca went straight to their old dorm building.
Final exams were over, and by tomorrow or the day after at the latest, students from all departments would head home, and the building would be locked up.
It wouldn't reopen until the new semester started.
The whole building was quiet.
When Rebecca knocked on the door, a cheerful "Coming!" came from inside.
The door opened, their eyes met, and both froze.
Jessica hadn't expected it to be Rebecca and instinctively glanced down at what she was wearing.
Rebecca hadn't expected that after Jessica returned all her clothes, she'd turned around and bought the same ones?
A white sweater dress.
Black knee-high boots.
Long hair falling on both sides of her face.
Jessica, who usually had such a bold personality, looked incredibly sweet and innocent.
But also strangely like her.
Pushing down the uncomfortable feeling, Rebecca held out the invitation in her hand. "Patrick asked me to give this to you!"
Jessica took it, not even getting out a thank you.
Rebecca had already turned and walked away.
As if she didn't want to say one more word to her.
The door slammed shut. Looking back at herself in the mirror, looking more and more like Rebecca, Jessica's eyes immediately welled up with tears.
Dennis treated Jessica well.
You could almost say he gave her whatever she wanted.
Except in bed.
Even with the lights on, able to see her face clearly, he still called out "Becca" over and over.
Every time that happened, Jessica wanted nothing more than to push Dennis away and make him see clearly who she actually was.
But those thoughts appeared quickly and disappeared even faster.
She dreamed of crushing Rebecca under her feet, making Dennis see that she was just as good as Rebecca.
To that end, Jessica, who hadn't cared about studying since stepping foot on Empire University's campus, worked harder than ever before.
She figured that with the Getty family's troubles, and Rebecca being dumped by Dennis, not to mention the coursework she'd missed during that half-month leave, plus all the participation points deducted by teachers, Rebecca must be struggling.
Jessica gave it everything she had.
But when exam results came out, while her class ranking had jumped from the teens to second place, Rebecca was still that forever unbeatable number one in the entire grade.
At least she had what Rebecca had.
Her eyes slid over the invitation on the desk. Seeing the exhibition location, Jessica's lips curved up, and she called Dennis.
"Dennis..."
The coldness in her voice instantly melted into gentleness when she heard Dennis's lazy voice on the other end. Jessica said softly, "I need to go to a jewelry design exhibition on Tuesday. Can you take me?"
Before he could answer, Jessica added, "Rebecca's going too."
"What time?"
"Ten in the morning."
"Come to my place tomorrow night."
Without waiting for her response, Dennis hung up.
The dorm room fell silent, and Jessica's shoulders slowly slumped.
