Chapter 182 Visiting Alexa
Thinking Rebecca was already asleep, she eased the door open as quietly as she could.
But as soon as she stepped in, she met Lucy's gaze head-on.
Headphones hanging around her neck, eyes dull with the glazed look of someone who'd spent the entire day buried in books.
Rebecca thought of Frederick's teasing comment, "Lucy, you're already a top student, why are you still working so hard before exams?"
Lucy smiled and stretched, "I'm counting on my ranking to get that scholarship!"
Empire University's scholarships required both excellent character and academic performance, and Lucy and Ryan were recipients of the first-class scholarship every year.
That scholarship covered almost all their tuition for the next year.
Rebecca smiled and held up the dessert she'd brought back, "Top student, your late-night snack with love has arrived. Want to have it now?"
"Thanks to my super cute and incredibly thoughtful Becca!"
Lucy got up with a smile and walked to the balcony to heat two cups of milk.
Eating snacks.
Drinking milk.
Full of energy to start another round of studying.
It was nearly one o'clock when they turned off the lights.
At seven sharp, both their alarms went off at the same time.
With matching bedheads, they greeted each other, then quickly got up and washed up, before sitting back-to-back at their desks.
In the spacious room, only the rustling sound of turning pages could be heard.
For lunch, they each had a sandwich and called it a meal.
When Rebecca's phone buzzed, she checked the screen, glanced at Lucy, and slipped out into the hall.
"Becca..."
On the other end, Layla said gently, "Mrs. Getty and I are back home now."
Rebecca said huffily, "Didn't we agree to wait until after my exam on Wednesday to leave the hospital and go home?"
"You know your mom's personality—once she's decided something, there's no stopping her."
Layla chuckled, "Don't worry, I'll take good care of her. Just focus on your exam."
"Okay!"
Rebecca hung up, went back inside to grab her bag, and caught a cab straight to the Getty villa.
The Getty family lived in the villa district on the east side of town.
The taxi stopped at the entrance to the villa district. As soon as Rebecca got out, her eyes started to sting.
When she stepped through the gate, Rebecca's steps gradually slowed to a stop.
The day the villa was sold, the living room had been a complete mess.
The expensive paintings on the walls, the sandalwood desk in the study, and that imported crystal chandelier over two meters tall on the ceiling... anything of value had been stripped away.
At first glance, it looked like it had just been ransacked by robbers.
But now, the villa was neat and clean, with everything in its proper place.
Even the faint fruity scent floating in the air was the same as before.
Frederick had done all of this. The realization settled over her, warm and a little overwhelming.
Alexa's voice pulled her out of her thoughts, "I told Layla she shouldn't have told you. I knew once you found out, you'd come running back."
Rebecca looked at her reproachfully, "If Layla hadn't told me, I would've been even more upset!"
"Okay, okay... It's all my fault."
Alexa took her hand and they walked inside together. "I just passed by Jennifer's place—their villa is empty. Looks like they moved away. Strange, she didn't even tell me."
Rebecca's heart skipped a beat.
Then Alexa glanced over at her and said, "Becca, give Dennis a call and invite him over for dinner. And ask him what's going on while you're at it."
"I..."
Before Rebecca could finish her refusal, a car engine shut off outside.
The doorbell rang.
Layla went to open the door, her voice lifting with surprise and delight. "Mr. Windsor..."
Rebecca turned around to see Frederick striding in.
Behind him, Mike followed with bags in both hands.
"Frederick's here."
Alexa let go of Rebecca's hand and went to greet him.
