Magic on the Edges

I couldn't sleep for Elijah. The traitor was right there, watching them. He tried to breathe evenly beside Liam, pretending to rest, but his mind kept showing him that flash of purple in those familiar eyes.

When morning came, there was a lot going on at camp. Wolves put away food and weapons and sharpened them. Everyone knew that Morta would attack again soon.

Marcus told his son over breakfast, "We need more scouts at the borders." "Morta's wolves could come from any direction."

Elijah nodded, the black poison lines now reaching his neck. "I'll send our strongest fighters. Aria should go too."

Aria looked up from across the fire. The sun made her silver-white hair shine. "Me? Why?"

"Because you're hiding something," Elijah said bluntly. "Something that might help us all."

The camp went quiet. Liam stepped closer to his sister, ready to defend her.

"It's okay," Aria said, touching her brother's arm. "He's right. I haven't shown everything I can do."

"What can you do?" asked Thorne, his eyes narrow with attention.

Aria stood and held out her hands. Slowly, the flames from the fire bent toward her like they were alive. They danced around her fingers but didn't burn her skin.

"I can talk to the elements," she said while the camp watched in wonder. "Fire, water, earth, air. They listen to me."

"Like magic?" a young wolf asked.

Aria nodded. "It's old magic. From the first Omegas."

Thorne slammed his hand on a table. "More proof that Omegas are dangerous! They have powers we don't understand."

"Powers that could save us all," Liam shot back.

Before the disagreement could grow, a howl cut through the air. Then another, and another.

"Border attack!" Marcus yelled, jumping to his feet.

Elijah's heart raced. This was no normal attack. It was too fast, too soon after Kaida's warning. "Everyone to your battle stations!" he ordered.

"Aria," Liam said quickly, "show them what you can really do."

They ran to the northern border where wolves were already fighting. But these weren't regular wolves - they had strange purple smoke coming from their mouths, and their eyes glowed like hot coals.

"Morta's new trick," Marcus growled.

The enemy wolves were stronger than before, running so fast they were hard to see. One jumped at Elijah, teeth going for his throat, but Liam tackled it away.

"The poison is slowing you down," Liam said, worried.

"I'm fine," Elijah lied, feeling the cold spread from his chest.

Near the forest edge, Aria stood with her arms stretched wide. Her hair floated around her head like she was underwater. "Come to me," she whispered.

The ground shook. Roots burst from the dirt, wrapping around the legs of enemy dogs. The wind picked up, so strong it pushed back attackers trying to reach the camp.

"She really can control elements!" Luna gasped.

Aria's eyes glowed silver as she called to the small stream nearby. Water rose in a huge wave and crashed into a group of Morta's dogs, washing them back into the trees.

But Morta had planned for this. From the forest shadows, a figure stepped forward - a tall woman with skin as white as bone, carrying a staff topped with a black stone. Morta herself had come.

"The sister of the last Omega," Morta purred, her voice like ice breaking. "Your tricks won't save them."

Morta pointed her staff at Aria. Black lightning shot out, hitting the ground at Aria's feet. The ground split open, making Aria lose her balance.

"Aria!" Liam screamed, running toward his sister.

Elijah followed, pain shooting through his chest with each step. The betrayer was here somewhere, watching. Waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

Morta laughed, the sound hurting everyone's ears. "You can't win, little brother of fate. Your pack is already broken from within."

Liam reached Aria just as Morta shot another blast of black power. He jumped in front, hands raised. The black lightning hit an unseen wall and bounced back, missing Morta by inches.

"Impossible," she hissed.

"Not for the last true Omega," Liam replied, his violet eyes glowing brighter than ever.

Elijah joined them, standing tall despite the poison. "And not for us together."

The three of them formed a line - Elijah, Liam, and Aria - facing Morta and her controlled dogs.

"Now, sister!" Liam called.

Aria closed her eyes. Fire exploded in a circle around them, so hot it turned blue. The flames shot higher, making a wall between their pack and the attackers.

Morta screamed with anger, but she couldn't cross the fire. "This isn't over! My servant is still among you!"

As she fled with her wolves, Elijah looked around at the faces of his pack. Who was it? Who served Morta?

The fire died down as Aria's strength faded. She fell to her knees, tired.

"You did it," Liam said, helping her up. "You showed everyone what Omegas can really do."

The pack crowded around, staring at Aria with new eyes - some filled with wonder, others with fear.

"How long have you had these powers?" Marcus asked.

"All my life," Aria revealed. "Our mother taught us to hide them. She said people would hurt us if they knew."

Elijah looked at his father. "Did you know Omegas could do this?"

Marcus couldn't meet his son's eyes. "There were stories..."

"Not stories. Truth," said Luna, moving forward. "The old books tell of Omegas who could bend nature to their will. That's why Alphas feared them."

The pack talked among themselves. Everything they believed about pack order was changing before their eyes.

"We should get back to camp," Elijah said, noticing how tired Aria looked. "Morta will return."

As they walked back, Liam stayed close to his sister while Elijah hung back, watching everyone. The betrayer had been quiet during the attack. Why?

That night, while the pack celebrated Aria's magic and their win, Elijah slipped away to think. The poison in his chest felt colder, spreading faster. He didn't have much time left.

A twig snapped behind him. He turned quickly, ready to fight.

"Just me," said a familiar voice as a person stepped from the shadows.

Relief rushed through Elijah. Someone he trusted. Someone he cared for.

Until he saw the purple glow in their eyes.

"You," Elijah whispered, his blood turning to ice. "It was you all along."

The person smiled, but it wasn't their smile anymore. "Hello, Alpha. Morta sends her regards."

A blade flashed in the starlight, plunging toward Elijah's heart where the poison already waited.
