Omega Rising
Blood. That was the first thing Liam smelled when he woke in the dark tent. Something was wrong. The space beside him was empty—Elijah was gone.
A scream cut through the night, followed by yells and running feet. Liam burst from the tent, his heart racing wildly. The camp was in chaos. Wolves ran in all directions, some shifting forms in their panic.
"What's happening?" Liam grabbed a young wolf running past.
"It's the Alpha!" the boy cried. "He's been attacked!"
Liam's world twisted. He raced through the camp, following the smell of blood—Elijah's blood. He found a crowd gathered near the edge of the forest. They parted when they saw him, faces pale with shock.
There, on the ground, lay Elijah. A knife stuck out from his chest, right where the poison lines collected. Marcus knelt beside his son, pressing cloths against the cut. Luna worked frantically with healing herbs.
"Elijah!" Liam dropped to his knees, reaching for his mate.
"He's alive," Marcus said, his voice shaking. "But barely."
"Who did this?" Liam demanded, looking around at the gathered wolves.
No one answered. Fear hung in the air like a thick fog.
"Someone saw something," Liam growled, his eyes flashing violet. "Tell me!"
"I saw a shadow," a small voice said. It was one of the young wolves. "But not who it was."
Luna looked up from her work, her hands covered in Elijah's blood. "The knife pushed the poison deeper. It's reaching his heart faster now."
"No," Liam whispered, taking Elijah's cold hand. "You can't leave me."
As if hearing him, Elijah's eyes fluttered open. "Liam," he breathed, his voice barely audible. "The betrayer..."
"Who is it?" Liam leaned closer. "Tell me, and I'll stop them."
But Elijah's eyes closed again, his breathing shallow and pained.
"We need to get him to my tent," Luna said. "I can do more there."
As they carefully moved Elijah, Aria appeared, her face tight with worry. "What happened?"
"Someone tried to kill him," Liam said, not taking his eyes off Elijah. "Morta's servant."
Marcus ordered guards around the healing tent while Luna and Sage worked inside. Liam paced outside, unable to sit still. The poison in Elijah's chest had spread visibly, black lines now creeping up his neck.
"He's getting worse," Sage said when she came out for more supplies. "The poison and the knife wound together—it's too much."
"There must be something we can do!" Liam cried.
"There is," said a quiet voice. Everyone turned to see Rook standing there, his face grim. "The Stone Circle. Its power could heal him."
"The Stone Circle is dangerous," Marcus argued. "It's where all this started."
"It's also where it could end," Rook countered. "It's our only chance."
Liam looked back at Elijah through the tent opening. His mate was dying. "I'll do anything," he decided. "We'll take him to the Stone Circle."
Thorne stepped forward, surprising everyone. "My wolves will guard the way. No one will stop you."
They prepared quickly. Dawn was coming, and they needed to reach the Circle by sunrise for the magic to be strongest. Four strong wolves carried Elijah on a stretcher. Liam walked beside him, one hand always touching his mate. Aria, Marcus, and the pack leaders followed.
"Stay alert," Marcus warned everyone. "The betrayer could strike again."
The forest was eerily quiet as they walked. No birds sang, no animals rustled in the bushes. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.
"Something's wrong," Aria whispered to her brother. "I can feel it."
Liam nodded. The hair on his arms stood up. Magic hung heavy in the air.
They reached the Stone Circle just as the first rays of sun touched the tall rocks. The stones seemed to hum, vibrating with ancient power.
"Place him in the center," Rook instructed.
They laid Elijah on the ground. The black poison lines now covered most of his chest and neck. His breathing came in short gasps.
"What do we do?" Liam asked desperately.
Rook handed him a small knife. "Your blood. It must join with his."
Liam didn't hesitate. He cut his palm and let the blood drip onto Elijah's wound. Nothing happened.
"It's not working!" Liam cried.
"More," Rook urged. "Your blood carries Omega power. Let it flow."
Liam cut deeper, pressing his bleeding hand right over Elijah's heart. He focused all his love, all his fear, all his need into that touch. "Come back to me," he begged.
The stones began to glow. Soft at first, then brighter, until they shone like small suns. The light pulsed in time with Liam's heartbeat.
"It's working," Aria gasped.
Something sparked inside Liam, a power he'd never felt before. It flowed through him like a river, washing away everything but his connection to Elijah. The world around him faded.
Inside the light, Liam could see Elijah's wolf spirit, fighting against the darkness trying to swallow it. Without thinking, Liam reached for it with his own wolf.
"I'm here," he called. "Fight with me."
The ground beneath them shook. The light from the stones shot upward, forming a dome over the Circle. Inside, Liam began to change. Not into his wolf form, but something new.
His skin glowed silver. Markings like moonlight appeared on his arms and chest. His eyes shone with violet fire.
"The true Omega," Marcus whispered in awe.
Liam placed both hands on Elijah now. Power poured from him, bright and pure. The black lines on Elijah's skin began to retreat, pushed back by Liam's light.
But something was fighting back. A shadow rose from Elijah's wound, taking shape above him—a woman made of darkness with purple flames for eyes.
"Morta," Thorne gasped.
"You cannot save him, little Omega," the shadow hissed. "His heart is mine."
"No," Liam growled, his voice echoing weirdly. "He's mine!"
The light around Liam grew brighter. The shadow screamed, twisting in pain. The fight between light and darkness raged above Elijah's body.
The pack watched in shock and fear. Even Aria stepped back, stunned by her brother's power.
"This isn't possible," Luna whispered. "No Omega has been this strong for centuries."
As Liam fought, Elijah's eyes suddenly opened. He reached up, grabbing Liam's arm. Power surged between them, Alpha and Omega joined as one.
The shadow shrieked, starting to tear apart. Liam pressed harder, pouring everything he had into destroying Morta's hold.
Then a voice cut through the chaos: "Stop them!"
A figure burst through the circle of wolves, moving too fast to see clearly. They threw something at Liam—a black stone that glowed with purple light.
The stone hit Liam's chest and stuck there like it was alive. Instantly, his silver glow dimmed. Pain twisted his face.
"Liam!" Aria screamed, running forward.
The figure turned, and everyone finally saw their face.
"You!" Marcus roared in disbelief. "My most trusted—"
A blast of purple energy knocked everyone back. The betrayer stood alone now, eyes glowing with Morta's power.
"The goddess sends her thanks," they said with a cruel smile. "Two for the price of one."
The black stone on Liam's chest pulsed, sending dark lines across his skin—just like the poison in Elijah. He collapsed beside his mate, both of them now trapped between life and death.
Above them, Morta's shadow laughed.
