Whispers of Treachery

"Mother has been waiting for you."

The words hung in the air like smoke. Elijah felt the poison in his chest pulse with cold fire. Beside him, Liam tensed, ready to fight.

Before anyone could move, a bright light flashed between the two groups. It grew brighter and bigger, taking the shape of a woman. When the light faded, Kaida stood there, her hair flowing with stars, her eyes changing colors like a rainbow.

"Enough!" Her voice boomed through the bush, making the trees shake. "These wolves are not yours, Morta."

The controlled dog with the black stone laughed with Morta's voice. "Sister. Always trying to save the day."

Kaida raised her hand, and a wave of golden light shot toward the enemy dogs. The black stones around their necks cracked and fell to the ground. The purple fire left their eyes, and they fell, suddenly free but very confused.

"This fight is over," Kaida stated. She turned to Elijah and Liam. "Return to your camp. We need to talk."

With a final flash of light, Kaida disappeared. The freed wolves, now back to normal, looked around in fear and confusion.

"What happened?" one asked. "How did we get here?"

Marcus stepped forward. "You were under Morta's control. It wasn't your fault."

"We should take them back with us," Liam offered quietly to Elijah. "They need help."

Elijah nodded, ignoring the pain that still spread from his wound. "All wolves are welcome in our camp tonight," he stated. "We face this threat together."

The trip back was slow. Many wolves were hurt, and the newly freed ones were weak from Morta's control. Elijah felt his own strength weakening, but he refused to show weakness. Liam stayed close, his hand often brushing Elijah's, sharing his strength through their tie.

When they reached the camp, Sage and Luna were ready with healing herbs and bandages. Aria had prepared food for everyone. The night was calm now, but Elijah could feel danger still hiding in the shadows.

"You need rest," Liam insisted, leading Elijah toward their tent.

"I need to make sure everyone is safe first," Elijah argued, but his legs nearly gave out beneath him.

Liam caught him easily. "The pack is safe for now. You won't help anyone by collapsing."

Inside their tent, Liam helped Elijah lie down. The wound looked worse—black lines now reached across his entire chest, creeping toward his heart. Liam put his hands over it, his silver markings glowing as he pushed his healing power into Elijah.

"Better?" Liam asked after a few minutes.

Elijah nodded, reaching up to touch Liam's face. "With you, always."

Their eyes met, and Elijah felt the now-familiar rush of love and wonder. How had he ever lived without this? Without Liam?

"I was so scared today," Liam admitted, his voice soft. "When I saw you fighting the poison, when I heard those wolves..." He shook his head. "I can't lose you, Elijah."

"You won't," Elijah promised, pulling Liam down for a gentle kiss. "We're bound together now. Nothing can change that."

Liam smiled against his lips. "Not even Morta and her tricks?"

"Especially not her," Elijah growled.

They fell asleep holding each other, their breaths matched, their hearts beating as one.

Elijah woke suddenly in the darkest part of night. The tent was filled with a soft blue glow. At first, he thought it was Liam's marks, but Liam was still asleep beside him. The light came from somewhere else.

"Hello, Alpha."

Kaida sat cross-legged at the foot of their bed, her form slightly transparent, like she wasn't fully there. Her eyes were sad tonight, a deep blue that matched the glow around her.

Elijah sat up carefully, trying not to wake Liam. "Goddess," he whispered.

"We don't have much time," Kaida said, her voice barely audible. "I can only hide this conversation from my sister for a few moments."

"What do you want?" Elijah asked.

"To warn you." Kaida looked at Liam's sleeping form with something like affection. "You've come so far, both of you. Farther than I dared hope."

Elijah felt a chill that had nothing to do with the drug. "Warn me about what?"

Kaida's eyes changed to a stormy gray. "Betrayal comes from within, Elijah Blackwood. Someone close to you is not what they seem."

"Who?" Elijah asked, already thinking of each member of his pack. Who could be working with Morta?

"I cannot say the name. There are rules even I must follow." Kaida's form flickered slightly. "But know this—the betrayer wears two faces and serves two masters."

"Thorne?" Elijah guessed. "Or Luna?"

Kaida shook her head. "Look closer to home, Alpha."

The words hit Elijah like a physical blow. Someone in his inner circle? Someone he trusted?

"How will I know who it is?" he asked, his voice hoarse.

"You already do," Kaida said. "Deep down, you've sensed it. Trust your instincts."

Liam stirred beside him, muttering in his sleep. Kaida looked at him with that same strange kindness.

"He is special," she said. "More than even he knows. The last true Omega."

"What does that mean?" Elijah asked.

"It means he holds the key to everything. The balance. The future of all wolves." Kaida's form got dimmer. "And Morta will do anything to control that key."

"I won't let her have him," Elijah said furiously.

"Love is your strength, Alpha. But it can also be your weakness if you love blindly." Kaida reached out a transparent hand toward the black lines on Elijah's chest. "Morta's poison seeks more than your heart. It seeks your bond with Liam."

A cold fear gripped Elijah. "Can it be stopped?"

"Yes. But the cure requires truth. Complete truth, between you and your mate." Kaida's eyes turned a warm golden color. "No more secrets, Elijah Blackwood. Even the ones you keep to protect him."

Elijah thought of the things he hadn't told Liam yet—about his family's secret Omega blood, about the dreams he'd been having since childhood, about the voice he sometimes heard when his wolf was closest to the surface.

"Time grows short," Kaida said, beginning to fade. "Remember, the betrayer is close. Watching. Waiting for the right moment."

"Wait," Elijah called, desperate for more information. "How do I stop Morta? How do I protect my pack—protect Liam?"

Kaida was almost gone now, just a faint blue shape. "Unite what was divided. Trust what feels true. And when the moment comes..." Her voice faded to a whisper. "Be willing to let go."

With those cryptic words, she vanished totally. The tent returned to darkness.

Elijah sat motionless, his mind running. Betrayal from within. Someone close to him. But who?

Liam stirred again and opened his eyes. "Elijah? What's wrong?"

For a moment, Elijah considered keeping Kaida's advice to himself. Liam had enough to worry about. But then he remembered her words: No more lies.

"Kaida was here," he said, taking Liam's hand. "She warned me that someone close to us is working with Morta. A betrayer in our ranks."

Liam sat up, instantly awake. "Who?"

"She wouldn't say. But it's someone we trust."

They looked at each other in the darkness, the weight of mistrust already heavy between them.

"We can't tell anyone about this," Liam said. "Not until we know who it is."

Elijah nodded. "We'll watch everyone. Trust no one but each other."

"And your father," Liam added. "And Aria. We know they're loyal."

The fear in Elijah's heart grew like a shadow. Could he be completely sure of anyone? The poison in his chest seemed to feed on his doubt, the black lines spreading a little further.

Liam noticed his discomfort and put his hand over the wound again, his healing power flowing into Elijah. "We'll figure this out," he promised. "Together."

Elijah pulled him close, breathing in his scent, finding relief in his warmth. "Together," he agreed.

As the first light of dawn streamed through the tent, they made plans in whispers. They would watch everyone, look for signs of lying. The pack would continue planning for Morta's next attack, but Elijah and Liam would be looking for the enemy within.

They left the tent to find the group already awake and busy. Wolves from different packs worked side by side, setting aside old rivalries in the face of a shared threat. It should have been a hopeful sight, but now Elijah looked at each face with new mistrust. Friend or foe? Loyal or betrayer?

Sage approached them, her old eyes worried. "The poison is spreading," she noticed, looking at Elijah's chest. "We need to try another healing ritual."

"Later," Elijah said. "First, I need to speak with the pack leaders."

In the main meeting room, Marcus, Thorne, and the other Alphas had gathered. Maps were spread out on the table, showing the areas of all the packs.

"We need to establish a united defense," Marcus was saying as Elijah and Liam entered. "Morta could strike anywhere next."

Elijah studied each face, looking for signs of lying. Who among them served two masters?

Rook stepped forward with his own plan. "I've marked the locations where Morta's controlled wolves have been spotted," he said. "There's a pattern."

Everyone leaned in to look. The marks formed a circle around their camp, tightening like a chain.

"She's surrounding us," Thorne noted.

"No," Liam said suddenly, his eyes wide. "She's creating a ritual circle. Like the Stone Circle, but larger."

A heavy silence fell over the group. If Liam was right, Morta wasn't just planning an attack—she was planning something much worse.

As the leaders talked strategies and defenses, Elijah found himself watching Rook. The young dog had been at the Stone Circle. He was Thorne's brother, trained by Kaida herself. Could he be the betrayer?

But then his eyes moved to Luna, so helpful, so kind. To the River Pack Alpha, whose wolves had been tamed. Even to his own father, whose secrets had only recently come to light.

The betrayer wears two faces and serves two masters.

As if feeling his thoughts, someone in the tent turned and met his gaze directly. For just a moment, Elijah thought he saw a flash of purple in those familiar eyes. Then it was gone, so quickly he might have imagined it.

But the poison in his chest burned colder, and he knew.

He knew who the betrayer was.
