Divided Lands, United Hearts

The water spat them out onto wet grass under the blue moon. Elijah landed hard, with Liam falling beside him. Aria fell a few feet away. For a moment, they just lay there, trying to catch their breath.

"Elijah!" Marcus ran toward them, his face full of relief and fear. "You made it back!"

Liam helped Elijah sit up. The deep cuts across Elijah's chest still bled, but already the wounds were starting to heal. That was the good thing about being a wolf—normal injuries didn't last long.

But this wasn't a normal accident.

"Something's wrong," Elijah said, looking down at the black lines of the cuts. "These aren't healing right."

Sage pushed through the growing crowd and knelt beside them. Her old hands gently touched the cut, then pulled back quickly. "Poison," she whispered. "Magic poison."

Liam's face went pale. "Morta. She did this."

Before anyone could reply, shouts erupted from the edge of the clearing. Wolves ran toward them, eyes wide with fear.

"Shadow Pack!" someone yelled. "They're attacking the eastern border!"

Thorne stepped forward, his golden eyes sparkling with anger. "That's not possible. I'm here."

"Not your wolves," said Rook, emerging from the shadows. "Someone else is using your pack's scent marks."

Elijah tried to stand, but pain shot through his body. The cut felt like it was burning from the inside. "We need to defend—"

"You need to heal," Liam cut him off, his words firm. "I'll go."

Fear gripped Elijah's heart. "No. It's too dangerous."

Liam smiled, touching Elijah's face gently. "I'm not the helpless Omega everyone thinks I am, remember?"

Before Elijah could argue more, howls echoed through the forest—the sound of wolves in war. Marcus looked torn between sticking with his son and defending their territory.

"Go," Elijah told his father. "I'll be fine."

Marcus nodded and changed into his wolf form—a massive gray beast with silver-tipped fur. Other wolves followed his lead, their forms changing in a blur of movement. Soon the clearing was filled with growls and the sound of paws hitting the ground as they raced toward the fight.

Liam paused, caught between his desire to stay with Elijah and his need to help the pack.

"I'll stay with him," Aria promised, taking her brother's hand. "Go. They need you."

After one more worried look at Elijah, Liam changed into his beautiful white wolf and ran after the others.

Sage inspected the black lines spreading from Elijah's wounds while Luna mixed herbs in a small bowl. "This is old magic," the doctor said. "Morta's poison seeks the heart."

"Not just his heart," Aria said quietly. "His bond with Liam."

Elijah felt it now—a coldness trying to reach the warm place inside him where his love for Liam lived. He fought against it, gritting his teeth.

"What can we do?" he asked.

Luna approached with her plant paste. "We can slow it down. But to stop it completely..." She looked at Aria.

"We need Kaida," Aria finished.

While the healers worked on Elijah, the sounds of fighting got louder. He hated being stuck here, unable to help his pack—unable to protect Liam. The thought of Liam in danger made the poison feel even colder.

"Tell me what's happening," he ordered.

Rook, who had stayed behind, closed his eyes. His silver markings glowed softly as he connected with the wolves in fight. "They're outnumbered," he reported. "The attackers are strong—stronger than normal wolves. And they're not just Shadow Pack. There are wolves from many packs, all fighting together."

"That's impossible," Elijah said. "Packs don't unite like that."

"Unless someone is controlling them," Luna offered, her face grim.

Suddenly, Rook gasped. "Liam—he's doing something. His markings are glowing. The other wolves are responding to him!"

Elijah felt a surge of pride mixed with fear. Liam was powerful, but strength made him a target.

"What else?" he pressed.

"Thorne is fighting alongside Marcus," Rook continued, surprise in his voice. "They're protecting each other. And—" He stopped, his eyes flying open. "They're retreating! The enemy wolves are pulling back."

Relief washed through Elijah, but it was short-lived. The black lines from his wound had spread across his chest, reaching toward his heart. Each heartbeat sent pain through his body.

"Hold on," Sage told him, her wrinkled face set with purpose. "The poison feeds on fear and doubt. Think of Liam. Think of your bond."

Elijah closed his eyes and focused on Liam—his smile, his bravery, the feeling of their hands touching. Warmth pushed back against the cold poison.

The returning wolves burst into the clearing, some limping, others helping hurt packmates. Liam was among the last to return, his white fur streaked with dirt and blood. When he saw Elijah, he changed back to human form and ran to his side.

"How bad is it?" he asked Sage.

"Bad," she admitted. "But you can help."

Liam didn't pause. He placed his hands over Elijah's wound, and instantly his silver markings began to glow. Elijah felt the warmth of their link push back against Morta's poison.

"It's working," Luna whispered.

Marcus approached, his human form showing cuts and bruises that were already healing. "The attackers have retreated for now," he reported. "But they'll be back."

"Who were they?" Elijah asked, his voice louder now that Liam was near.

"Wolves from at least five different packs," Thorne said, joining them. His bright eyes were troubled. "But they weren't themselves. Their eyes were strange—purple, like fire."

"Morta," Aria spat the name like poison.

"She's using them," Luna agreed. "Controlling them somehow."

Thorne looked at Elijah and Liam with new respect. "I saw what your mate did out there," he told Elijah. "He connected with our wolves, made them stronger. I've never seen anything like it."

"The prophecy," Sage said quietly. "It's happening faster than we thought."

A tense silence fell over the group. The fight might be over for now, but this was just the beginning of something much bigger.

"We need to unite the packs," Liam said suddenly. "All of them. It's the only way to stand against Morta."

Thorne laughed without fun. "Unite the packs? Impossible. There's too much bad blood."

"Not impossible," Elijah said, sitting up with Liam's help. "Necessary."

He looked around at the faces of his pack, at Thorne and Luna, at Rook with his strange knowledge. Most of all, he looked at Liam, whose courage and love had changed everything.

"The old ways are broken," Elijah continued. "The barriers between Alpha and Omega, between different packs—they're holding us back. Weakening us." He took Liam's hand. "Together, we're stronger."

Before anyone could react, a howl cut through the night—a sound of pure agony that made everyone freeze. It came from the way the enemy wolves had retreated.

Rook's eyes widened. "That's my contact in the River Pack. He was helping us track Morta's movements."

Another howl joined the first, then another. The sound was wrong somehow—twisted and filled with pain.

"She's punishing them for failing," Luna whispered, her face pale.

Aria stood, her hands glowing with power. "We have to help them."

"It's a trap," Thorne warned.

"Of course it is," Elijah agreed, stumbling to his feet despite the pain. "But we can't leave them to suffer."

Liam supported Elijah, worry clear in his violet eyes. "You're not healed. The poison—"

"Will have to wait," Elijah finished.

The howls grew more desperate. Wolves looked to Elijah, waiting for his order. Even Thorne seemed to be waiting.

Elijah felt the weight of authority heavy on his shoulders. The poison whispered that he should protect only his own, that other packs weren't his business. But Liam's warmth reminded him of what really mattered.

"We go together," Elijah decided. "All of us. We show Morta that her divide-and-conquer strategy won't work."

As wolves prepared to move out, Liam pulled Elijah aside. "You don't have to prove anything," he said softly. "Not to me."

Elijah touched Liam's face. "This isn't about proving anything. It's about becoming who we're meant to be. Together."

Their eyes met, and in that moment, the link between them felt unbreakable. The poison in Elijah's veins receded a little more.

As they prepared to leave, Sage grabbed Elijah's arm. "Be careful," she warned. "Morta's poison is still inside you. If you let fear or hatred rule you out there, it will reach your heart."

"I won't let that happen," Liam promised, his hand hard in Elijah's.

The united wolves moved out, following the sounds of pain. Elijah and Liam led them, side by side. Behind them came Marcus and Thorne, ancient foes now fighting together. The sight gave Elijah hope.

But as they hit the edge of their territory, the howls suddenly stopped. The forest went totally silent. Even the insects stopped singing.

And then, stepping out from behind the trees, came the wolves they'd been hearing—their eyes glowing purple with Morta's magic, their bodies larger than normal, their teeth bared in hungry smiles.

Leading them was a wolf Elijah recognized—the young River Pack wolf who had once asked for refuge. Now his eyes burned with purple fire, and around his neck hung a black stone that pulsed with evil power.

"Welcome," he said in a voice that wasn't his own. "Mother has been waiting for you."
