Heart Over Duty

Elijah hit the water and felt like he was falling forever. The blue light whirled around him, making it hard to tell which way was up. Then suddenly, the water was gone. He landed hard on cold stone.

He stood up, his heart racing. The Stone Circle spread out before him, exactly as he'd seen in the mirror. Twelve tall stones made a perfect ring. Purple flames burned between them, casting strange shadows. And in the middle stood Liam and Aria, holding hands.

"Liam!" Elijah called out, his voice booming.

Liam turned, his violet eyes widening. "Elijah? No! You can't be here!"

Elijah started forward, but stopped when a woman stepped out from behind one of the stones. She was tall and deadly beautiful, with hair as black as night and eyes that glowed red. Morta.

"Welcome, Alpha," she said with a cruel smile. "I've been waiting for you."

"Let them go," Elijah growled, his wolf rising close to the surface.

"So demanding," Morta laughed. "But you're in my world now. My rules." She waved her hand, and the purple flames grew higher. "You came for your mate. How touching."

Elijah's eyes never left Liam. "Are you hurt?"

Liam shook his head. "We're okay. But Elijah, you shouldn't have come. It's what she wants."

"I don't care," Elijah said. "I'm not leaving without you."

Morta clapped her hands. "Such love! It would be sweet if it wasn't so useful to me."

She walked closer to Elijah, her red dress spilling like blood around her feet. "Do you know why you're here, Alpha? Do you know what power lies between you and your mate?"

"The prophecy," Elijah said. "The union that breaks the chains."

"Yes!" Morta's eyes lit up. "Balance must be restored. Creation and destruction must be equal again."

Aria stepped forward. "Don't listen to her, Elijah. She twists the truth."

Morta flicked her wrist, and Aria fell to her knees, gasping. Liam tried to help his sister, but invisible ties held him back.

A new feeling rushed through Elijah—rage mixed with fear, but most of all, a need to protect Liam that was stronger than anything he'd ever felt. His pack tasks, the rules he'd lived by—none of it mattered compared to Liam's safety.

"What do you want?" Elijah asked.

Morta smiled sweetly. "A choice. That's all." She pointed to Liam, then to Aria. "One must die for balance to be restored. You decide which one."

Horror washed over Elijah. "Never."

"Then everyone dies," Morta shrugged. "Your pack, the Shadow Pack, all wolves everywhere. The balance must be restored one way or another."

Elijah's mind raced. Thorne had warned him about this. A sacrifice made from love. But there had to be another way.

He looked at Liam, their eyes meeting across the circle. In that moment, something passed between them—not just love, but understanding. Trust.

"There's always another choice," Elijah said, stepping into the circle.

As soon as he crossed the line of fire, his silver markings began to glow. Liam's marks answered, shining with the same light. The stones around them hummed with power.

Morta's smile faltered. "What are you doing?"

"You said balance requires a sacrifice," Elijah said, moving toward Liam. "But you never said what kind."

He reached for Liam's hand. The moment their fingers touched, a shock wave of power rolled through the circle. The purple flames turned silver.

"Stop this!" Morta yelled, but her voice seemed weaker.

Liam squeezed Elijah's hand. "I knew you'd come," he whispered. "I've been calling you."

"I'll always come for you," Elijah promised. "No matter what."

Their marks grew brighter, the light spreading across their skin like flowing water. Elijah felt his wolf rising, not in anger or fear, but in joy. In tribute.

"The sacrifice," Elijah said, understanding settling on him, "isn't a life. It's pride. It's the old ways."

Liam nodded. "Alpha and Omega, equal in power. That's what Kaida was trying to tell us."

Morta screamed, a sound of pure rage. "No! The prophecy demands blood!"

"Your version does," Aria said, rising to her feet. The ties that held her seemed to be weakening. "But Kaida's prophecy speaks of union, not death."

Elijah pulled Liam closer, their foreheads touching. Every place their skin connected felt electric. Years of holding back, of following rules that kept Omegas beneath Alphas—all of it melted away.

"I love you," Elijah whispered. "I think I have since the moment I saw you."

"I know," Liam smiled. "I felt it too."

Their lips met in a kiss that felt like coming home. Warmth spread through Elijah, washing away doubts and fears. In that moment, nothing existed but the two of them and the bond that connected them—stronger than duty, stronger than custom, stronger even than the magic swirling around them.

The ground beneath them began to shake. The stones glowed with white light.

Morta screamed again, this time in fear. "What have you done?"

Aria laughed, a sound of pure joy. "They've chosen love over power. That's what Kaida knew would happen."

The purple flames were gone now, replaced by a circle of silver light that spun faster and faster around them. Through it, Elijah could see glimpses of the trees, of his pack waiting. Of Thorne and Luna standing with Marcus, watching the sky.

"We can go back," Liam said. "The way is opening."

Elijah held him tighter. "Together."

But Morta wasn't finished. With a howl of rage, she lunged at them, her hands now black claws reaching for Liam's throat.

Without thinking, Elijah pushed Liam behind him and faced Morta head-on. Their eyes locked, and in hers he saw ancient hate, the need to destroy what she couldn't control.

"You can't stop what's already begun," Elijah told her calmly.

Morta smiled, her teeth sharp. "Perhaps not," she hissed. "But I can make you pay for it."

Her claws struck out, faster than thought. Elijah felt burning pain across his chest. He heard Liam cry out. The silver light flickered.

"Elijah!" Liam caught him as he stumbled.

Blood soaked Elijah's shirt, but strangely, he felt no fear. The link between them pulsed stronger than ever. He turned to Liam, seeing the fear in those violet eyes he loved so much.

"It's okay," he said, touching Liam's face. "I'm not leaving you."

The light was spinning faster now, the Stone Circle beginning to fade around them. Aria grabbed them both, pulling them toward what looked like an opening made of water and light.

"We have to go now!" she shouted over the roar of magic.

Morta's scream followed them as they stepped into the light. "This isn't over! Balance will have its due!"

The last thing Elijah saw before the world vanished was Morta's face, twisted with hatred but also fear. Then there was only light, and Liam's hand holding his.

They were falling again, but this time together. The blue light carried them, and somewhere ahead was home.

But as they fell, Elijah felt something dark following them. Something that had stuck itself to his wound. Something hungry.

And he knew, with terrible confidence, that Morta wasn't lying.

This wasn't over.

It was just starting.
