Chapter 818 Disgusted by Ugliness
Chapter 818 Disgusted by Ugliness
On the fifth day after giving birth, she came home from the hospital. Two maternity nurses took care of the baby, and one looked after of Thalia.
A nutritionist delivered three meals and three snacks directly to Thalia each day.
She spent most of her time sleeping, only waking to eat.
She was in a daze until around the twentieth day, when she finally started to feel human again.
During that time, Evelyn and Daniel came to visit a few times, but Thalia was always asleep when they arrived.
They would take a quick peek at the baby and leave.
One of those times, Amara happened to have brought a pediatrician home to check the baby's vitals. After seeing them off and coming back upstairs, Evelyn asked, "I'm really curious—what was Thalia's reaction when she first saw the baby?"
Evelyn remembered the scene in the operating room that day. The anesthesia for the C-section was only from the waist down, so she was still pretty much conscious.
The first thing the doctor did after delivering the baby was hold it up to Thalia's face. Thalia glanced over, and the first words out of her mouth were: "So ugly."
Amara couldn't hold back, she burst out laughing.
Then after cleaning up the little one, the doctor brought the baby over to do skin-to-skin contact.with Thalia.
Thalia turned her head away, refusing coldly. "I don't want to. Too ugly."
After hearing the whole story, Evelyn laughed hard.
Thalia had always cared about looks, and honestly, in those first weeks, the baby really wasn't much to look at.
All red and wrinkled, still hadn't filled out after more than twenty days.
By late October, the baby had hit one month.
Thalia's recovery wasn't going well. The labor had started naturally before ending in a C-section, and that combination had taken a real toll on her body.
When Vaughn suggested throwing a one-month celebration party, she turned it down flat.
In just over a month, William's dark circles had gotten much deeper.
Early November, cold air moved in. The heating at Mistwood Hill was running full blast. Thalia was prone to feeling hot after giving birth, she would sweat, tossing and turning through the night, kicking off the covers only to pull them back on again and again.
Right after her postpartum month ended, she caught a cold.
At midnight, William went to the nursery to check on the little baby before bed.
When he returned to the bedroom, he heard Thalia coughing.
He thought it was a mild throat irritation, so, he poured a glass of water and reached over to help her sit up.
The moment he touched her, he jumped in shock.
She was burning up.
Amara came downstairs in her robe and told William to find a thermometer. "Don't get the digital one, get the old-fashioned kind."
William took a while to find a mercury thermometer. They took her temperature four or five times. It wasn't coming down.
"Let me call a colleague and check what she can safely take."
That November was rough. The baby cried constantly and needed to be held and rocked to sleep by people taking turns. William's focus was entirely on Thalia, and with her cold, he couldn't risk being near the baby. Without meaning to, he ended up isolated from the baby.
Thalia's cold dragged on for nearly half a month before it started getting better.
Late November, Evelyn came up to Mistwood Hill. As soon as she walked in, she pulled out something red from her bag and handed it to her.
"An invitation?"
"Yeah."
"You're finally letting Elijah out of death row?"
Evelyn rolled her eyes at her. "Can you speak like a normal person? What death row?"
"Fine, fine, fine,, not death row—love's prison."
Thalia looked down at the invitation. It was plain and proper without any extra flair, not the kind of style someone like Evelyn who loves design would choose.
She looked at the card, then at Evelyn.
"Stop looking. I don't love it either. The Lopez family dynamics are complicated—can't be too flashy."
"So you caved." Thalia clicked her tongue a couple times.
Evelyn scoffed. "It's called concession, don't misuse words. This is what happens when you don't study hard."
Thalia stood up and pulled her toward the door and downstairs, calling out Fallon to bring down two sets of yoga clothes.
"You're doing yoga with me."
Evelyn stretched her arms. "From what I saw on Isla's social media, are you planning to make a comeback? She's already found scripts for you."
