Part 38
A/n: few more chapters before it ends im sad :(
I had no idea what Edward was going to tell him. I mean I knew but not how he was going to do it.
Edward slid inside the door easily and like he knew everything about my place. Aiden was dangling off the stairs like the monkey he was so I ignored him and walked towards Edward.
"Please make yourself comfortable" He peeked his head above my shoulder and gave a shy wave to Aiden.
"Uh...hope I'm not late" He whispered softly as he trudged towards the couch. It was messy and strewn with Aiden's colouring kit and Legos. I glared at Aiden while I picked it up to which he sheepishly smiled.
Turning back I realise that Edward was actually sitting in my living room. The anxiety inside me rushed back and I felt my throat dry. Aiden was going to know that Edward, the person he met before was his father. It was just too much.
"You didn't say anything to him, did you?" Edward's sudden voice broke my thoughts. I blinked my eyes at his scratchy rough voice. He looked nervous by the way he was tapping his legs against the floor.
"Huh?" I licked my lips raising myself and dropped the toys back in the box nearby.
He looked over his shoulder, "Did you tell him anything?"
I followed his line of attention and noticed Aiden pretending to climb the stairs using rails. He managed to get halfway through before huffing and turning back towards me.
"No" I whimpered
"Oh"
That's all Edward said before the room was filled with silence. I went inside the kitchen and handed him the glass of water before sitting in front of him. He chugged the entire glass to calm his nerves and then stared at the carpet below him.
"I was waiting for you" I started, breaking the silence, "It's better if he hears it from you"
"Yeah" Edward breathed
"Wait here," I said and stood up from the couch. He nodded his head and opened his mouth as if to say something but held back.
I took slow steps towards Aiden and he stilled. Aiden raised his eyebrows at me, the funny thing he picked up from that dragon tales he watches.
"Can you come with me for a minute? Edward wants to tell you something"
"Me?" Aiden widened his eyes before leaving the railing to which I leaned in and gripped his waist. He wrapped his arms around my neck making my lips twitch.
"Mummy am I in trouble?" Aiden whispered as I carried him towards the couch.
A short laugh escaped my lips at that, "No baby not at all. Why? Did you do something that will get in you trouble?"
He shook his head, "No"
"Then you'll be fine" I mumbled quietly as we reached the living room. Edward sharply inhaled as we sat down opposite him, his eyes flickering between me and Aiden. It was clear that he was on edge as well.
"Hi Aiden" Edward cleared his throat
Aiden gave him a weak smile in return while hiding by my side. I made him sit properly inside of leaning and clinging like a koala. Sometimes he does that to avoid talking to the people.
"I noticed you had Lego collection" Edward eased into talking which I was grateful for. No one wants the bandage to be ripped off quickly. It's painful.
Aiden hummed, "My favourite"
"Even I like them. Maybe we can build them together"
"Okay," Aiden grinned sitting up.
I let myself slump against the couch as they both began talking about Legos which I had no knowledge about. Apparently, there was a movie about that toy and for the first time, I realised how similar they were. My face hurt from trying not to smile at their animated actions.
After a few more minutes, Aiden was relaxed and was leaning forward to talk more. If that's what Edward was aiming for he succeeded. He had done it.
"So..." Edward licked his lips, drawing the word. Aiden's attention perked up and he focuses his attention on him.
"There's a reason I came to see you."
"You want to talk" Aiden completed his sentence for him. That made Edward awkwardly smile.
"Yes"
"Did Aria tell you about your father?"
Aiden frowned and blinked his eyes. His eyes fell on me and then he stared back at Edward.
"Not much"
His tone made my heart twist but I held back. Edward deeply inhaled at that and nodded his head.
"You know him?" Aiden asked in a small voice, almost hesitant.
Edward's nose flared at that and he quickly averted his eyes towards me. I nodded my head because he had to do it now instead of waiting any longer.
"I am him"
Aiden stared at him with a blank expression like he didn't Edward. There were various emotions flickering his face. He shook his head while playing with his fingers.
Edward swallowed, "Aiden I am your father. That sounds so Star Wars actually it isn't because they say it's some effect like a glitch. It's so rubbish-"
He was rambling I could see that to which I pinned him a glare and cleared my throat, "Edward"
"Yeah right sorry about that"
He scooted closer to Aiden and sat down on his knees in front of Aiden. I blinked back my eyes and stared at the scene unfolding in front of my eyes.
"I'm sorry for not being around and no amount of my apologies is going to ever make up the lost time." His stare was directed at me but I tried not to show that on my face.
"I promise you that from now on I'll always be here for you. No matter what"
"You're my dad? Really?" Aiden questioned, his voice was so raspy and strained. It felt like he was almost scared to say out those words aloud. Aiden had never questioned me more on the topic of his father and I should have known. I should have realised that he obviously wanted to know more. By the looks of if he really didn't understand Edward's words because he's five. Something that he did got from that was Edward is his father.
I looked at him, my son and he was pale. He kept staring at Edward like he was a stranger. Edward seemed out of words and hurt that there was no response from his side other than the question.
"Yes," Edward replied softly, his jaw clenched tightly. He took Aiden's hand that was resting on his thigh and stroked his fingers.
I couldn't hold back the tears anymore. All these years the moment I have been waiting for and it finally dawned on us. I wiped the tears away and sniffled.
"Mummy?" Aiden blinked his eyes at me, frowning at my tear-stained face. I rarely cried in front of him because he gets upset and doesn't like it but at that moment I couldn't hold back. It was too much.
I swallowed the lump in my throat, "Hmm?"
"Is Edward my dad?"
"Ahh...it's true...Yes, love" I nodded my head, "H-He's..he's your father."
I tried hard not to choke on my own words and cry.
Aiden quietly turned back and blinked his eyes at Edward. He innocently asked, "Why did you leave us?"
I sobbed, slapping a hand against my mouth while Edward shook his head furiously. That was his own doubts and they were understandable because he had to live without Edward all those years.
"That's a complicated story buddy. I promise you that I will explain to you everything when you are old enough to understand"
Aiden pouted, "I'm big I'm five years old"
Edwards's lips twitched and he nodded his head, "You are but few more years, okay?"
Aiden huffed but nodded his head anyway. Edward seemed pleased with that and he stared at me for a few seconds. It was embarrassing to cry in front of him.
"Will you leave again?" Aiden asked after a minute which made Edward widen his eyes.
He shook his head, "No. Never. Not doing that again"
"Okay," Aiden drawled and slumped back on the couch, his tiny body making the couch bump against the wall.
"Does that mean I can see you again?" Edward asked hopeful and I chewed on my lips waiting for Aiden to answer. It was a lot for him to take in but he didn't look affected as much as I thought he would. He took the news well. Maybe because he didn't understand it all that well.
Aiden rolled his bottom lip in between his teeth, "Mmh only if you bring me more Legos"
"Deal" Edward grinned, exhaling deeply like he was holding his breath. I couldn't relate more.
I thought it would be wise if Edward stayed back for lunch. After all, he was too excited to go away after meeting Aiden and I didn't want to crush him. Besides Edward agreed to make grilled cheese so it all worked out. Aiden was easy to call Edward dad which was kinda unexpected.
The lunch was loud because Aiden couldn't stop talking with Edward about everything and nothing. Maybe he thought that Edward was not going to see him again.
"How do you even know to make these?" I questioned as Edward and Aiden were sitting on the floor surrounded by those Legos. They hurt my legs twice so I decided to sit on the couch instead.
Edward smiled at me, "My sister was huge on art and craft when we were kids so she bought these once and I couldn't stop building them. It's fun"
I snorted dryly, "Tell that to my legs. They hurt"
"Maybe if you watched where you walk" Edward drawled teasingly which made Aiden giggle.
"Heyy don't laugh at me when it's your fault for laying these devils on floor."
Aiden sputtered and shook his head, "They are not devil mummy"
Edward agreed with him and they both stared back at me with identical grins on their face. It hurt to see how similar they look.
Before I could say anything else the doorbell rang loudly. Edward curiously looked at me. I stared at the clock and frowned because I did not invite anyone.
"I'll see" I stood up and walked to the door all while feeling Edward's eyes on me.
Opening the door my frown disappeared when I noticed Ashton standing on the other side with a pizza box in his hands. My eyes widened slightly as I completely forgot to tell him about Edward.
"Are you going to let me in?" Ashton grinned
"Who is it?" Edward questioned from my behind, obviously, he couldn't see Ashton in front of me.
Ashton peeked over the shoulder and glared at me, "What is he doing here?"
