Chapter 185

Chapter 185
Seeing Adam looking at her, Sloane's tears immediately welled up, her voice choking just right.

"What kind of person did you provoke? Matthew saved you and is still in the emergency room."

"If anything happens to him, can you bear that responsibility?"

Evelyn wasn't led astray, staring straight at her, her tone calm.

"Sloane, you sound quite certain. How do you know those people were definitely coming for me?"

She precisely caught the flaw in Sloane's rhetoric.

Sloane froze, then sneered, her voice carrying its usual superiority.

"Who doesn't know the consequences of assassinating Matthew? No one dares touch him."

"All these years, Matthew has never had an incident. If not your enemy, who else could it be?"

"Sloane, you seem to have forgotten." Evelyn spoke. "He had a food poisoning incident years ago."

"That's when his stomach problems started. Oh, but you probably don't know."

"After all, you'd already grandly married into Europe then."

"If I remember correctly, it was right around when Ms. Tudor started transferring her management authority to Matthew."

"That timing is quite coincidental too, don't you think, Ms. Tudor?"

Sloane froze. She really didn't know about this.

Before Sloane could say anything, Emma exploded like a cat whose tail had been stepped on:

"That food poisoning was an accident!"

"Was it?" Evelyn looked at her with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Why don't you recall when Matthew started changing his attitude toward you?"

"Do you think someone as smart and cautious as him wouldn't notice anything? He just didn't want to spell it out."

Emma's face turned white inch by inch.

That year's food poisoning had indeed been arranged by her through bribing the chef.

But she'd only wanted to teach him a lesson, make him rest at home for a few days, not think he could defy her wishes after getting power.

She hadn't expected it to be so serious.

He'd stayed in intensive care for several days, scaring her for a while.

But after learning of Marsha's scheme, she wished she'd had the chef add more poison then, making him die in the ambulance!

If Matthew had died then, the Perkins Group would have long been in her pocket!

Thinking this, Emma laughed coldly, her voice shrill:

"What are you? Just Matthew's momentary plaything."

"I'm Matthew's mother, his direct relative. I'm ordering you to get out of here now!"

Evelyn didn't react.

The bodyguards behind her, along with Matthew's bodyguards, had already blocked in front of her in unison.

Sloane frowned. "Have you all gone mad?"

"I'm Limbo Inc.'s Vice President. Aunt Emma is Matthew's mother. What are you trying to do?"

"Until Matthew wakes up, none of you can get near him."

Evelyn's voice wasn't loud, but it steadily overpowered all the noise.

"I won't leave either. Whatever schemes you have in your hearts, I advise you to abandon them. You won't succeed."

Sloane lowered her eyes, nails digging deep into her palms.

She regretted it so much.

She never imagined the hired organization she'd found would be so unprofessional, disregarding bystanders' lives when killing the target!

Thinking of him lying unconscious in the emergency room, her heart filled with terror.

If this was exposed, she would definitely die!

Emma looked furious, instinctively about to step forward to argue.

Just then, a cry came from behind her.

"Babe!"

Monica rushed out of the elevator. Seeing Evelyn covered in blood, she was completely terrified.

Her legs went weak, nearly unable to stand.

"Why is there so much blood on you? Where are you hurt?"

Monica cried anxiously, her voice trembling. "Go get checked quickly. Why are you just standing here?"

"What are you all doing? Just letting her stand here?" She shouted angrily at the bodyguards.

"I'm fine." Evelyn nodded at her reassuringly.

Her voice was soft, but her eyes held pain she couldn't suppress. "This blood... is all Matthew's."

Monica froze in place.

Emma spoke mockingly. "Where did you wild girl come from? Both of you, get out of here now!"

"Aunt Emma." Henry walked out of the elevator, greeting Emma.

Monica had run too fast—he'd just caught up.

"You came at the perfect time!" Emma grabbed onto him like a lifeline, her voice immediately rising. "Help me!"

"This woman caused Matthew's severe injury. He's still being resuscitated in the emergency room!"

"She even called so many bodyguards to bully me and drive me away! Completely disregarding that I'm Matthew's mother!"

"Shut up!" Monica, hearing her throw dirt, turned red with anger and instinctively stepped forward.

"See, see—" Emma hid behind Henry, pointing at Monica, her finger trembling with rage.

But Henry walked directly to Monica's side, carefully tugging at her sleeve. "Honey, don't get angry. With so many people here, it's not good to get physical."

Monica huffily turned her face away, her chest heaving violently.

Emma's eyes nearly fell out. "Honey? Henry, when did you get together with her?"

"Recently." Henry answered her briefly, then looked at Evelyn.

"Evelyn, go get examined first. Let Mon go with you. I'll watch over Matthew here."

"No need." Evelyn directly refused.

With Emma and Sloane here, how could she leave? How dare she leave?

If Matthew woke up and didn't see her, he'd definitely worry.

She didn't want to leave his vicinity at all right now.

"Evelyn, if Matthew wakes up and knows you didn't get checked, he'll definitely worry."

Henry's voice was unhurried but reassuring.

"If his surgery succeeds but something happens to you, he really won't know what to do."

"Right, Eve, come with me to get examined." Monica held her hand, her voice softening, eyes red.

"You have children. You can't be like before, doing things without considering consequences."

"If something happens to you, we'll all worry."

She paused. "Mrs. Gray is already at the airport with the children. They're coming back right away."

Hearing this, Evelyn looked sharply at Monica, asking in shock, "How do they know?"

"There were many witnesses at the scene. It was a shooting incident—it's already trending."

Monica gripped Evelyn's hand, finding her palm covered in sweat.

"You and Matthew were both photographed."

Evelyn's lashes trembled. She said nothing.
