Chapter 186
Chapter 186
"Eve, let's go get checked, okay?"
"After treating the injuries and changing clothes, when Mrs. Gray arrives, they won't worry as much."
Evelyn was silent for several seconds before finally relenting.
She looked at Henry with reddened eyes. "Henry, watch over Matthew for me."
"Don't let anyone near him. If Matthew wakes up, tell him I'll be right back."
Henry nodded seriously.
Evelyn glared fiercely at Emma and Sloane, making both their hearts skip.
"This is my last warning—don't try anything."
"Maybe Matthew will be soft-hearted toward you, show you old sentiment, but I won't!"
"If you dare hurt him in the slightest, I'll repay it a hundredfold!"
Emma and Sloane were forced back half a step by the intensity in her eyes.
Evelyn withdrew her gaze and limped away with Monica's support.
Once their figures disappeared around the corridor corner, Emma immediately turned to Henry, her voice carrying urgency and accusation.
"Henry, do your parents know you're with her?"
"Someone so disrespectful and ill-mannered—your parents couldn't possibly like her, right?"
"You guessed wrong." Henry answered honestly. "My parents are thrilled."
"These past days they've been arranging to renovate the Phillips estate. Once it's done, I'll bring her to meet them."
He wasn't lying at all.
Henry's parents were very open-minded.
After all these years of him not dating or marrying, his mother had even wondered if he was hiding his orientation, already mentally prepared to accept him being gay.
Just then, Henry announced he'd married—and to a woman.
After seeing Monica's photo, they couldn't have been happier.
Take Henry's mother—worried about making a bad first impression on Monica, she'd generously deposited hundreds of thousands more at the beauty salon recently.
She had them do every treatment available, determined to meet her daughter-in-law looking her absolute best.
Henry's father needed no mention—he'd recently had the family chef prepare healthy meals, secretly skipped dinners, and started working out.
As for the family elders, they were overjoyed, couldn't wait to see Henry's wife.
Hearing Monica would visit, they kept chatting in the group about what gifts to prepare.
The gifts they mentioned were each more exquisite and precious than the last, almost competing with each other.
Overall, the Phillips family showed unanimous delight.
Emma's tone carried disdain. "I've never heard of this girl in A City."
"Must be from an ordinary family. Let me advise you—marrying someone like that won't benefit your career at all!"
Henry smiled faintly. "My family doesn't have a throne to inherit."
"The Phillips family rule is to marry only the one you love."
"Only men without ability need marriage alliances for support. I don't need that."
Emma looked at him, too angry to speak.
"Fine, let's not talk about her. What about that woman with Matthew—why do you respect her so much?"
"Does she deserve it? Someone with no respect for elders!"
Henry spoke unhurriedly. "Aunt Emma, you're quite uninformed."
"Evelyn is the sole heir of the Gray Group, the granddaughter Susan treasures like her heart and liver. I even think Matthew might not quite match her."
He paused. "You just said my wife has no background—she's Evelyn's best friend. Isn't that background enough?"
Emma's eyes nearly fell out again.
She turned to Sloane, her voice trembling. "This woman is Adam?"
Sloane nodded, her expression ugly.
"What?" Emma cried out.
She'd long heard of Adam's equity trading cases on Wall Street.
Since being forced out of the Perkins Group, she'd wanted to pursue collaborations. Adam was one of the people she'd targeted.
But she'd never managed to make contact.
"Yes, she's the granddaughter the Gray family hid for decades." Sloane bit her teeth and explained.
Her jealousy surged even more violently.
She'd planned from the start to hide this from Emma, desperately hoping to see Emma clash with Adam.
Who knew Henry would show up halfway?
The moment she saw him, her heart sank, sensing trouble.
Emma seemed drained of strength, slumping into a corridor chair.
Henry couldn't be bothered with these two women anymore. He sat on the other side and pulled out his phone to message Monica.
"Honey, you almost fell when you arrived. Be careful when accompanying Evelyn for checks. Don't rush too much."
On the other side, Monica didn't see Henry's message.
She was pushing Evelyn toward the CT room, her steps quick but steady, like a mother cat protecting her young.
She first accompanied Evelyn to get examination forms, then insisted on renting a wheelchair.
Evelyn couldn't refuse and had to sit in it.
Soon, Evelyn's phone rang.
It was Susan calling.
"Evel, how are you? The children and I are at the airport. We'll be in A City tonight."
"I'm fine, Grandma, don't worry. Nothing serious."
"Mommy!..." Caleb's anxious voice came through.
Susan handed him the phone.
"Mommy, I saw on the news you were bleeding. Does it hurt? Are you okay?"
Caleb's voice carried heavy tears, breaking up.
He'd always been a calm child—this was the first time Evelyn had heard him so panicked.
"Baby, don't worry about me. I'm fine." Evelyn softened her voice, answering slowly.
"Mommy, wait for us. Sister and I will be back soon."
"Okay. I'll wait for you."
The line went silent for a few seconds. When Caleb spoke again, his voice was lower, carrying barely perceptible hesitation. "Mommy... Chloe's in the bathroom right now."
"I want to know... how is he? The news made it look like he was badly hurt."
Evelyn's heart clenched sharply, as if squeezed by an invisible hand.
She took a deep breath, keeping her voice as steady as possible. "He's still in the emergency room. But he'll definitely be okay."
"Yeah!" Caleb nodded hard.
Susan took back the phone, gave Evelyn a few more instructions about boarding, then hung up.
Evelyn and Monica arrived at the CT room.
Results came quickly: mild concussion and shoulder fracture.
"You said you were fine!" Monica looked at the report, tears falling. "It must hurt so much, doesn't it?"
Evelyn's smile was strained. "Not that bad."
Perhaps because her mind was on Matthew, she couldn't even feel her own pain.
After completing the examination and having her injuries stabilized, Evelyn changed into clean clothes.
Though her face remained pale, she looked much better than before.
"Eve, Henry just messaged saying Emma brought a whole team of lawyers. They're surrounding the emergency room entrance now."
Evelyn's expression instantly darkened, her eyes frosting over.
