Chapter 184
Chapter 184
Crimson was spreading silently from Matthew's chest like a flower devouring everything.
The glaring red nearly made Evelyn faint.
How... how could there be so much blood?
After the gunshots, people scattered in panic.
Only Evelyn and Matthew remained on the plaza in front of the apartment.
Everything happened too fast—even the bodyguards secretly protecting them hadn't had time to react.
Now they rushed over shouting, scanning the surroundings vigilantly.
"Adam!"
"Mr. Perkins!"
Two head bodyguards crouched down, anxiously checking their conditions.
Evelyn shook off the bodyguard's hand. She held Matthew, her whole body trembling so badly she could barely hold him.
"Don't worry about me, I'm fine! Call an ambulance!"
She looked down and shouted at Matthew:
"Matthew, can you hear me?"
"Matthew!"
But Matthew's eyes remained tightly closed, no response.
Evelyn pressed her hands desperately on his chest, but blood kept gushing through her fingers, warm and sticky, unstoppable.
She felt her heart being viciously squeezed by a large hand, even her breathing becoming fragmented.
Extreme panic and fear engulfed her. Her vision even started going dark, unable to see the face right in front of her.
She instinctively leaned close to Matthew's ear, her voice softening as if afraid to shatter something. "Matthew... Matthew..."
No response.
Evelyn felt her breathing about to stop.
Just then, the hand she was pressing on Matthew's chest felt an extremely weak pull.
One of Matthew's fingers lightly touched the back of her hand.
Her tears immediately poured out.
Evelyn's tears mixed with snot streaming down. She choked out softly:
"It's okay... it's okay, the ambulance will be here soon..."
Matthew's finger slipped down again as he fell unconscious.
The ambulance quickly arrived and rushed him to the nearest hospital.
Evelyn insisted on riding in the same ambulance.
She sat to one side, her hands, body, even face all stained red with blood.
The nurse's eyes kept twitching as she carefully spoke:
"Miss, let me check you first. With so much blood on you, I'm afraid it's not good. You should lie down..."
"No need, I'm fine!" Evelyn shook her head. "This blood isn't mine, it's his... Please check him quickly. What's his condition?"
As she spoke, she couldn't stop trembling, her face deathly pale.
The nurse didn't dare speak again.
The ambulance equipment was basic. They connected Matthew on the stretcher to a respirator, but his injuries were too severe—the slightest movement risked massive bleeding.
The vehicle screamed all the way into the hospital. Matthew was rushed into the emergency room.
Evelyn refused suggestions to get checked herself and sat alone on a bench outside the emergency room.
The lights were harsh white, making her face look like paper.
Her hands were still shaking, unable to stop.
After a moment, she looked up at the bodyguard. "Find out who did this!"
Her voice was vicious, carrying unprecedented murderous intent.
Today's attack was aimed at her.
If not for Matthew, she'd probably already be in an accident.
But she was safe, at the cost of Matthew severely injured inside, life or death uncertain.
She regretted so much—today she shouldn't have agreed to let Matthew see her off!
The bodyguard was also very panicked inside.
He'd never seen Adam so frantic yet so imposing, that ruthlessness emanating from her bones made one afraid to look directly at her.
"Adam, we're already investigating closely."
"The car the perpetrator drove was temporarily stolen, and his surface identity information is fake."
"We found he recently flew to Novaria from overseas. There's a high probability he's a specifically hired assassin."
Evelyn bit her lower lip tightly, nails digging deep into her palms, but she seemed to feel no pain.
"Find out who ordered this as quickly as possible!"
"Yes! Definitely!" The bodyguard bowed and quickly stepped aside.
She would never let go of whoever hurt Matthew.
If Matthew really had any mishap today, even if it cost her life, she'd tear that person to pieces!
Same moment, at Emma's villa.
Urgent knocking sounded.
Emma opened the door. Seeing who it was, her expression turned cold.
"What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you before to never appear in front of me?"
Sloane's face stiffened but she held back:
"Aunt Emma, I came because it's urgent! Matthew's severely injured in the hospital!"
"What? What happened?" Emma cried out.
"He blocked a bullet for someone and got severely injured!"
Sloane spoke with reddened eyes. "It was that woman from the funeral."
"I don't know what spell she cast on Matthew. These past days he hasn't even gone to the company, just circling around her all day."
"Today he even got severely injured because of her and is in the emergency room!"
"Let's go see him! I heard she's guarding outside the emergency room. Who knows if she's after Matthew's fortune?"
Emma looked at Sloane before her without speaking.
Her feelings were complicated.
After leaving the Perkins Estate that day, she'd locked herself in the villa refusing to go out, her heart filled with hatred and resentment.
Now hearing Matthew was severely injured, she actually felt somewhat pleased.
That accident years ago hadn't killed Matthew. If this one did, that would be good.
However...
Though she looked down on this woman before her, going to the hospital together wasn't impossible.
If Matthew really died, the inheritance could only go to her as his mother!
"Let's go." She coldly spat out one word.
Soon, they arrived at the hospital.
"You bitch, what did you do?" Emma started cursing at Evelyn from afar.
The slap at the Perkins Estate was still vivid. Today old and new grievances surged together—she couldn't suppress her anger at all.
"Please calm down." Sloane held Emma's arm, crying until her eyes were swollen.
Evelyn looked at this pair before her, a mocking sneer curving her lips.
These two actually came together?
Sloane had always been infatuated with Matthew. Her coming wasn't surprising.
But Emma had already torn her relationship with Matthew apart. In her heart, she probably wished he'd die sooner.
Her coming to the hospital probably had only one reason.
She wanted to confirm whether Matthew was actually dead.
Evelyn stood up, her gaze icy.
"Aunt Emma, you came at the right time." Her voice wasn't loud.
"Whoever hurt Matthew, I will root them out. No matter who it is, I'll make them pay."
"What do you mean?" Emma spoke.
Evelyn didn't answer.
Her sharp gaze swept back and forth across Emma's and Sloane's faces, as if identifying something.
Sloane felt a chill down her spine from her stare and unconsciously shrank behind Emma.
