CHAPTER 154 — THE FOREST OF SHADOWS
CHAPTER 154 — THE FOREST OF SHADOWS
The forest had changed.
Even the wind felt heavier, carrying whispers that scraped at Luna’s mind like fingernails on stone. Shadows moved independently of their sources, curling and twisting with a life of their own. The ground beneath their feet trembled subtly, the roots of ancient trees shifting as if uneasy, and the moonlight seemed dulled, smeared with a faint, oily blackness that made the night feel suffocating.
Luna’s wolf padded closely against her side, molten gold fur flickering like living fire. Its ears were pricked, muscles coiled, eyes scanning every movement, every whisper of sound. Luna could feel the subtle ripples of the corruption in the forest through the wolf’s senses like a pulse of malevolent energy threaded through every leaf, every branch, every stone.
Asher’s shadowed form moved beside her, alert, aura flaring faintly, his golden eyes sweeping the dark. “It’s here,” he murmured. “The corruption has a center. Somewhere deep in this forest, it’s consolidating. And it’s watching us.”
“I can feel it,” Luna whispered, pressing her hand against her wolf’s back. The bond pulsed in response, molten energy weaving through her chest, countering the creeping influence of the darkness. “Every step I take, it… reacts. It knows we’re close.”
The first manifestation appeared suddenly. A stag, massive, with eyes that glowed crimson, emerged from the shadows. Its fur was matted, dark tendrils curling from its hooves into the soil, pulsing like veins. It snorted, breath steaming in the cold night air, and lowered its head in a charge.
“Hold!” Asher shouted. Shadows erupted from his form, coiling into blades that sliced the air as he met the stag head-on. Luna’s wolf lunged beside her, claws extended, molten light flaring as they intercepted the creature. The bond surged between them, grounding Luna against the assault, reinforcing her courage.
The stag collided with the shadows, a deafening crash that sent shockwaves through the ground. Luna felt the pulse of corruption radiating from it, sharp and invasive, but her wolf pressed closer, molten energy blasting outward, weaving protection around them.
“Together!” Luna screamed, heart hammering. Step by step, she moved with the wolf, dodging the stag’s strikes, guiding its momentum, threading her will through the bond. The wolf mirrored her movements, claws flashing, molten gold igniting the darkness, forcing the corrupted creature back.
Asher roared, striking the stag with a surge of shadow and fire. The beast stumbled, tendrils of darkness snapping, then faltered entirely. The wolf lunged, teeth sinking into the corrupted fur, molten light flaring around it. The stag’s scream tore through the forest, then abruptly, it dissolved into black mist, leaving behind only silence and the faintest pulse of residual corruption.
Luna collapsed to her knees, breathing hard, sweat and tears mixing on her face. The wolf nuzzled her, molten eyes soft and reassuring. “We’re okay,” she whispered. “It’s gone… for now.”
Asher crouched beside them, shadows retracting, muscles tense, eyes sharp. “It’s not gone,” he said quietly, voice low, deadly. “It’s consolidating. Whatever created this corruption is learning, adapting. And we’re stepping into its lair now. I can feel it, waiting, anticipating.”
Luna nodded, pressing her hand to the wolf’s back again, drawing strength from the bond. “Then we go forward,” she said, voice firm despite exhaustion. “We face it. And we end this.”
The forest grew denser, trees twisting into unnatural shapes, their trunks gnarled, roots coiling like serpents. Every sound the snap of a branch, the rustle of leaves was amplified, a whisper of malice carried through the corrupted air. Shadows darted at the corners of vision, fleeting but unmistakable.
“Stay close,” Asher murmured. “It will try to separate us, test us, weaken the bond. Don’t let it.”
The wolf growled low, molten light flaring, and Luna mirrored its posture, hands glowing faintly with the bond’s power. The pulse in her chest was steady now, stronger, sharper, an anchor against the corruption’s attempts.
Then the path opened. A clearing, unnatural and vast, lay before them. The trees here were blackened, roots twisting together into jagged forms, forming a circle around a central pit. From the pit rose the faint pulse of corruption, rhythmic, deliberate, like a heartbeat slow, patient, malevolent.
Luna’s stomach tightened. “This is it,” she whispered. “The center… the source.”
Asher’s jaw tightened, molten eyes blazing. “Then we finish it. Here. Now.” Shadows flared along his arms, coiling like blades, ready to strike at anything the corruption throws at them.
The forest seemed to hold its breath. Even the whispers of the void paused, as if watching, waiting, knowing this confrontation would determine everything.
Luna pressed closer to her wolf, fingers digging into molten fur. Together. Always together. The bond pulsed in response, molten threads igniting the darkness, slicing through the faint whispers of corruption that lingered in the air.
Then it began shadows erupted from the pit, twisting into forms humanoid but grotesque, reaching, writhing, tendrils snapping outward with malevolent intent. The corrupted energy pulsed through them, testing, probing, seeking weaknesses.
Asher roared, launching forward with molten shadows slashing through the air. The wolf lunged, claws flashing, molten light igniting every strike. Luna moved in tandem, hands glowing, threading the bond through every strike, every dodge, reinforcing, connecting, fighting.
The corruption lashed back, tendrils snapping toward them, seeking to pierce, sever, consume. Every strike that met the bond’s molten energy sparked a shockwave that shook the clearing, echoing through the twisted forest.
Luna gasped, feeling the pulse in her chest spike. The bond was strained, tested as never before, but her wolf pressed closer, molten light flaring, and Asher roared beside them, shadows forming a protective cage, striking back with precision and raw power.
They were surrounded. The corruption was patient, relentless, ancient but together, they were stronger. Step by agonizing step, blow by blow, bond by bond, they pushed forward, toward the pit, toward the heart of the spreading darkness.
And Luna knew this: the fight had only just begun.
