CHAPTER 153 — THE CORRUPTION SPREADS
CHAPTER 153 — THE CORRUPTION SPREADS
The forest felt different when they returned.
The trees still stood, the moon still cast pale light, but everything shimmered with a faint unease. Shadows clung to the trunks more tightly, twisting in ways they never had before. The air was heavy with a scent Luna couldn’t name a mixture of damp earth, ozone, and something… tainted.
Her wolf padded close to her side, ears twitching, tail low but tense. Luna could feel the faint pulses in the ground beneath them, subtle vibrations that whispered of the void’s lingering influence. She pressed her hand to the wolf’s back, grounding herself, letting the bond flow steadily.
Asher’s gaze swept over the forest, shadows along his arms flickering in warning. “It followed us,” he said quietly, voice low, almost a growl. “Not all of it… but enough to start corrupting this place.”
Luna swallowed, heart tightening. “How much?”
“Enough to make the pack restless,” he replied. “And clever enough to hide in plain sight. We’ll see it soon enough. Wolves will act strange, animals will behave unnaturally, and it’ll be subtle at first. But it’s spreading.”
They moved through the forest, careful, alert, every step tense. Luna could feel the faint pull of the corruption, like a shadow brushing against her chest, teasing the hollow space the void had once reached for. Her wolf’s pulse remained steady but alert, nudging her forward, warning her, anchoring her against the lingering darkness.
The first sign was subtle a flash of movement in the underbrush. A small fox, eyes glowing faintly red, darted past, freezing to stare at them with unnatural intelligence. It hissed, teeth bared, before vanishing into the trees.
“See?” Asher muttered. “It’s already twisting the animals. Making them unpredictable. Aggressive. Curious… dangerous.”
Luna nodded, hand tightening on her wolf’s fur. “We need to warn the pack.”
They reached the edge of the clearing where the pack gathered. The moment Luna stepped into the light of the moon, she sensed it: the subtle tension, the whispers of unease rippling through the group. Wolves growled at shadows that weren’t there, ears flicking toward sounds no one else could hear. Pup and elder alike were restless, nervous.
“Something’s wrong,” Luna said quietly, pressing close to Asher. “The void… it’s not gone. It followed us.”
Asher’s gaze swept over the pack, sharp and alert. “I can feel it too,” he said, low and dangerous. “It’s subtle, but it’s there. It’s starting to infect them, slowly. Not physically yet but their instincts, their perceptions… their fear. The longer it lingers, the stronger it grows.”
A low growl rippled through the group. Luna’s wolf stepped forward, glowing faintly, molten light illuminating the tension. The pack responded instinctively, some backing away, some stiffening, others lowering heads in unease.
Luna closed her eyes, focusing on the bond, reaching through her wolf to the pack, to Asher, to herself. We are one. We are together. Nothing will take us.
The pulse of energy flowed, molten gold threads weaving through the air, touching the pack, grounding them. For a moment, the whispers of unease softened. The shadows retreated slightly, reluctant but still lingering.
“They’ll hold for now,” Asher said, voice tense. “But we can’t let it spread. We need to find the source before it corrupts everything before it reaches the heart of the pack.”
Luna nodded. Her chest still throbbed faintly from the strain of the void, but the wolf pressed closer, nuzzling her. We can do this. Together.
The next signs came quickly: a hawk that circled unnaturally, screaming, never landing; trees whose roots twisted unnaturally beneath the soil; a river that shimmered darkly even under moonlight. Each instance subtle, almost imperceptible, yet undeniable. The corruption had followed them beyond the void, into the natural world.
“This isn’t just about my wolf or the bond,” Luna said, voice low but urgent. “It’s spreading into the world… into everything.”
Asher’s eyes flared, molten gold, shadows writhing at his skin. “Then we fight. We find it. And we burn it out, root and branch. Together.”
Luna exhaled, pressing her forehead to her wolf’s, drawing strength from its pulse, its warmth. We are stronger than this. We’ve survived the void. We’ll survive this too.
The wolf’s eyes met hers, molten light flickering, a silent promise of loyalty and ferocity. Together, they would face the corruption. Together, they would protect the pack. And together, nothing no shadow, no void, no ancient malevolent force would break them.
The forest held its breath, the air tense and quivering with anticipation. Shadows flickered, animals stirred, and somewhere, deep in the distance, the faintest pulse of the void remained a heartbeat of malice, patient, waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Luna straightened, gripping Asher’s arm. “We start tonight,” she said, voice steady, determination burning in her chest. “We track it, we fight it, and we end this before it spreads further.”
Asher nodded, molten eyes burning with intensity. “We fight together. We burn it out.”
The wolf growled low in affirmation, molten light pulsing. The bond thrummed in unison, stronger than the lingering corruption, a tether of fire, gold, and loyalty cutting through the darkness.
And with that, they stepped forward into the forest, ready to face the corruption spreading from the void.
Because if the darkness thought it could take them apart… it was gravely mistaken.
