CHAPTER 155 — THE SACRIFICE OF SHADOWS

CHAPTER 155 — THE SACRIFICE OF SHADOWS

The clearing was alive with malevolent energy, pulsing, writhing, a heartbeat of corruption that seemed to echo inside Luna’s own chest. The pit at its center gaped like a wound in the earth, black tendrils rising from it in constant motion, probing, testing, lashing.

Luna’s wolf stood firm beside her, molten gold fur flickering like fire against the black, muscles coiled, claws digging into the forest floor. The bond thrummed violently, radiant threads weaving between them, cutting through the creeping darkness.

Asher’s eyes blazed molten gold, shadows along his arms twisting and lashing outward, striking at the corrupted tendrils. “Stay close,” he warned, voice sharp. “It’s testing us trying to separate us, to find the weakest link.”

Luna nodded, pressing her hands to the wolf’s back, drawing strength from the bond. We are one. Always one.

The corruption struck first a massive wave of shadows erupted from the pit, crashing toward them like a tidal wave. The ground shook, roots snapping, trees bending unnaturally, and Luna was lifted briefly off her feet before Asher caught her, shadows coiling tightly to form a protective barrier.

“Push forward!” he roared. “We can’t let it anchor here!”

Step by agonizing step, they moved closer to the pit. The corrupted forms, twisted humanoid shapes with writhing tendrils, struck at them, snapping and biting. Luna’s wolf lunged, molten light igniting each strike, claws tearing through the darkness. Luna mirrored every movement, weaving her hands through the air, threads of the bond striking out, reinforcing, shielding, anchoring.

But the corruption adapted, learning faster than she could anticipate. Tendrils lashed directly at the bond, seeking to sever it, to tear her wolf away. Pain flared in Luna’s chest, sharp, sudden, a hollow ache screaming like fire and ice at once.

“We can’t hold it much longer!” she gasped, teeth gritted, clutching the wolf tighter.

Asher growled, shadows coiling into jagged blades, slashing through the tendrils with precision. “Then we make it hold!” he shouted. “Whatever it throws, we endure!”

Another wave slammed into them, stronger, faster, more focused. One tendril found its way past Asher’s defenses, striking directly at the wolf. Luna screamed, pressing herself forward, molten threads of the bond surging outward, but the shadow wrapped around the wolf’s limbs, dragging it toward the pit.

“No!” Luna screamed, clinging to the wolf as the darkness yanked at it. Pain lanced through her chest, every nerve screaming. The bond strained, threads quivering, threatening to snap.

Asher surged forward, molten shadows flaring, striking the tendril with all his strength. Sparks of black and gold flew as he collided with it, but the force was immense. For a brief moment, Luna felt the wolf slipping from her grasp, pulled toward the yawning pit of corruption.

“Luna listen to me!” Asher roared, voice sharp and commanding. “You have to anchor it! You are the bond! If it breaks, we lose her!”

Luna pressed both hands to the wolf’s chest, molten threads of energy flowing through her fingers, through her soul, through the bond, surging outward like fire in the darkness. The pain was excruciating, a fire burning through her ribs, through the hollow space that the void had once reached for. But she held on. I will not let go. I will not fail. Not now. Not ever.

The wolf roared in response, molten energy flaring, claws digging into the tendrils. Step by agonizing step, Luna pulled the darkness toward herself, threading every ounce of will into the bond, forcing the shadow to relent. The tendril hissed, shrieking, and finally snapped, recoiling into the pit with a scream that echoed through the forest.

But victory came at a cost. Luna fell to her knees, chest burning, sweat and tears streaming down her face. The wolf pressed against her, molten eyes soft, loyal, alive but Luna felt it: the bond had taken a mark of the corruption, a faint scar threading through it. Not broken, not lost, but strained, vulnerable.

Asher crouched beside them, jaw tight, molten shadows curling protectively around the two. “You did it,” he said softly, voice low, almost reverent. “But it won’t stop. It’s learned. It knows now that the bond is stronger than it anticipated. And it will be back… stronger, more devious, more relentless.”

Luna swallowed hard, pressing her forehead to the wolf’s. We survived. Together. Always together. Yet a gnawing unease settled in her chest. She could feel the faint echo of the void lingering in the forest, faint whispers winding around roots, threading through the soil. Patient. Watching. Waiting.

She looked at Asher, golden eyes meeting molten gold, shadowed face tense. “We have to prepare,” she said quietly. “Before it comes back… we strengthen the bond. We prepare the pack. We stop it before it spreads any further.”

Asher nodded, jaw tightening. “Yes. We fight together. And if it comes to a choice… if we have to sacrifice to protect the bond… we will. Together.”

The wolf growled low, molten light flaring, a silent affirmation of loyalty and ferocity. Luna pressed her hand to its fur again, feeling the bond pulse, steady, alive, unbroken. We will survive. We will endure. Always together.

The forest seemed to hold its breath around them. The shadows lingered, faintly twitching at the edges, echoes of the corruption that would not relent. Luna felt the weight of what had passed and what was yet to come. The void had struck, and it would strike again.

But for now, she, her wolf, and Asher were still standing.

And that alone was enough.
