Chapter 189 Doing It
Chapter 189 Doing It
Lex's POV
I never knew I was going to be doing this anytime soon, but two days later Lisa, I and Landon were driving to that exact location that Landon was able to track down, and we got to find out it was my mother's house.
To the place she lived, the police she grew up with and the place she used to know before she got married to my father, which was the beginning of her hell and what eventually led to her death.
By the time we turned into the main street of that building, I was already feeling nervous. I wondered exactly what I was going to say to them and just how I was going to introduce myself to them without getting them pissed off at the mention of my father's name.
"Maybe I shouldn't mention my father's name," I suggested to Landon, who was sitting alone in the front of the wheel while Lisa and I sat behind.
"I don't know, dude. I don't think there's a way you can introduce yourself to them without giving them a proper explanation of who you are, which is going to be mentioning your father's name over and over again as well as your mother's," he said to me, and that was it. There was no cornering around it; there was no bending anything. I was going to have to explain myself openly to them and tell them, 'No, I am the son of the monster who killed their daughter.'
"I don't think I am ready to do this, Lisa. I swear I do not feel like it is the right time. What if they get so furious that they hold me down here only to hand me over to the police or my father again?" I asked my gaze to move from Lisa to Landon, who I could only see behind him.
"You honestly think that your mother's people are going to want to do anything that is in favour of your father? 'I don't know, dude, but I really doubt that they are going to turn you to your father, especially when they find out that you are not like him and that you're doing everything you can to break away from him. They are going to help you if they really feel sorry for what their daughter went through,' Landon said, but I was staring at Lisa and waiting to hear what she was going to say.
There was something about the way she spoke to me; whenever she said something, it always appeared to me as the truth, and there was never a reason to doubt it, and every single time I've trusted her like that, it always worked.
"Aren't you going to say something?" I asked, still staring at her face now as I waited anxiously, my heart beating faster than usual.
"I do not know what else you want me to say, Lex, but whatever decision you make, I'm going to be standing right here beside you, even though I think that it's right for you to confront this once and for all and get it over with so that whenever we find our freedom, we are going to know that we are both free and it is not just one-sided."
For moments I went silent, staring at her as I tried to convince myself that this was the right thing to do, but then all I could see was my mother's face over and over again and all the pain she went through, and I worried that maybe, just maybe, I was going to be bringing such pain back to them.
In a few minutes we were driving into the gates of this building, and just as Landon drove into the garage, we stepped out of it. I and Lisa walked in front while Landon was behind us, and with the way the security personnel around the building were staring at us, they were obviously wondering what young people like us were doing in the outskirts of town.
I didn't know if my grandfather received my email, but I had already sent a request to come over, and I told him the exact time and day I will be coming.
"Please take your rights; the chairman is in the living room, and he is ready to see you," a woman who looked like she was in her mid-50s said to me, and I quickly nodded my head slowly, wondering how she came directly to me as if she knew who I was.
I held Lisa's hand tightly as we both walked into the threshold, and just then Landon's voice called out to me.
"Remember why you are doing this; do not lose your steeze or act out of emotions. Whatever they say to you, you need to accept it whether you agree with it or not; you need to be clear in your message." He was speaking to me as if he knew something I did not know, and just then my curiosity was piqued.
"Why are you saying this to me now, Landon? What is going on?" I asked as we stood, right there at the threshold, speaking in whispers to each other.
"I don't know, Lex, but I may have read some things about the dude, and he's not a very gentle type. I don't know for sure; those were all public opinion. You could go in there and meet an entirely different person," he said to me, and he was right to keep that away from me because I could already feel myself running out of air.
"You can do this, Lex. I do not believe there is anyone you cannot face. You can do this. You need to walk in there and present yourself as a responsible son of their daughter because this is the right thing to do." Lisa's voice echoed into my ears, and just as if it had given me some strength, I did not know when I summoned the courage and knocked on the door twice before stepping in.
